At the end of the lane the tall wrought iron gates draw you in. Pass through the Barrell Memorial Gate and you’ll pay tribute to a beloved son who drowned in the Illinois River in the early 1900s. Go a little further and you’ll enter a vast world of stories to imagine. Some souls are old from the 1800’s. Some just babies. You’ll find entire families resting, at peace in surroundings that are so beautiful you hope they realize. Around the first curve the lake sits below and over the hill. Drive further in and you’ll find sculptures of deer, angels, benches to rest, and the most noted granite memorial where Sam Dent was laid to rest. Sam was a Civil War veteran and former slave who died in 1890. Winding lanes that seem endless, to some it may feel eerie and to others who jog, bike, or drive through it’s a quiet time away from everything. A time to reflect. I’m not aware of any haunted stories or sightings here, but there is an energy for sure, and come at night you just never know if the ghost of Marion Lambert from the now closed Barat college pays a visit in her long blue dress.
