Question: What is the purpose of having a service where you rent wet suits for profit if you refuse to rent them? I am competing in the triathlon tomorrow at Mammoth Lake and I asked if I could reserve and pay for a wet suit just in case the water is too cold tomorrow. Both times I have spoke with Will who is refusing to let me pay and rent a wet suit I may not even use. Seems like a great deal for the store! Then hangs the phone up on me. I am very grateful that I live in Houston and can go to another scuba shop. This just would of been more convenient. Very unfortunate experience.

I was frantically rushing to the Flower Gardens and could not for the life of me find anyone to rent me a flashlight… I did NOT want to miss out on the spectacular night dive so I called the folks at Mammoth Lake and they made some exceptions and rented some out to us, all the while being friendly and chatty… like what all dive shops should be! We were in and out in 20 minutes but I enjoyed every minute of my experience and will be back to dive Mammoth! Thanks Maximum Scuba, y’all hooked it up!

Carl, a dive master and master diver — and an awesome teacher of the sport, as I found out — holds some of the licenses that no one else has in the state of Texas. He has decades of experience in teaching, and his ever calm and patient demeanor eased any fear I had of going into the murky waters of Mammoth Lake! I also love the shop and its owner Jeff — hilarious, warm, and so in love with the ocean. Everyone coming to and through the shop was also nice, and a lot of the people stuck around for hours — signs of good people and fun!

The people here are really nice and helpful(mostly) and I loved the scuba instructor and dive master I had. With that said, when trying to figure out details to get a certification, EVERYTHING was wrong. I talked to three different people, including the guy in charge twice, and still managed to get different information each time. If they’re going to encourage me away from taking online classes, then when I emailed, and when I called them would have been the time to do so, instead of waiting until I drove the hour over there to get the learning materials for it. After agreeing to doing the three-day weekend course, I was informed it was classroom day 1, pool day 2, lake day 3. What I should have been told was that it’s all up to the instructors, but to be prepared to do the pool day 1. I would recommend requesting to talk to the instructor to get accurate information. Other than that, these people are very nice and relaxed, and are willing to help you out.

So happy with the new management. Came here the first time today since Maximum Scuba took over and it was a much, much better experience. There were a ton of people in the water, but the lake is so large it didn’t bother us. There really are a bunch of things in the water to look at. If you are not diving off the back deck, there are plenty of covered pavilions with a concrete pad, picnic tables, and steps down do a small dock on the water. The biggest negative is the cost($ 20/person) and the very poor visibility(less than 10 feet).

Great place. Lots of knowledgeable staff. Friendly folks. Decent amount of stock in store and willing to order anything they don’t have. New owners are GREAT and have really turned this place around.

The new owners of the dive shop are fantastic! My friend and I went diving there apparently one of the first days they opened and had a great time. The rental gear that was provided was excellent. Although the viz was less than ideal, it is still a great local place to go dive!

Mammoth Lake has become the dive location for the Greater Houston area. It is 1 hr south of Downtown Houston off HWY288. Mammoth Lake is a full service dive shop located on the most unique dive locations in Texas. A former archeological dig site, now a Texas Historical landmark, Mammoth Lake was made to be ‘the’ inland diving attraction on the Texas Gulf Coast. So visit Mammoth Lake — and dive into history! They have a growing list of things to do at Mammoth Lake: — Scuba Diving — Snorkeling — Freediving — Triathlon Training — Long Distance Swimming — Swimming — Kayaking — Primitive Camping — RV camping — Scuba Air tank fills
