Banks Lake is a cool spot to hang out and try to spot a gator er’ two. It’s a huge nature/wildlife reservation area, with parts of it(closer to the outpost) accessible by foot. The rest of it, you can only access by renting a canoe or kayak from the outpost(although I can’t say how safe I’d feel paddling around a gator infested lake in a kayak…). There are a couple small boardwalks that reach out over the shore and a 1⁄3 mile long path that stretches a bit further out into a peninsula. Other than that, it’s all water and swamp — certified by the red neck girl working the outpost counter to be guaranteed full of alligators(she even named one«Nugget»). And now, some parting words from the outpost lady: «People ask me, ‘Are you sure there’s gators in this water?‘ I say: ‘You’re in Southern Georgia, heck yeah there are gators in that water!‘ And then they go and they let their dang kids swim in the waterin’ hole anyway and I say don’t come cryin to me once you ain’t got no kids no more!»
