Rose’s Garden is a private bartering garden owned by Rose Gilbert. She’s had a garden growing in her backyard in Lakeside, CA, since the mid-1970’s since she bought this property. Infrequently, Rose will sell the produce and plants she grows on a portable table in her driveway or through local charities. Your key to taking out any of the produce available here is to donate new vegetable or berry plants, soil amendments or containers, working in her garden by weeding or watering(she’d appreciate this the most because it needs to be done every day) or offering your services such as clean-up and haul away or carpentry. She was thinking about re-establishing her chicken coup, so maybe this is something you can talk to her about and help her with. The garden is comprised of lemon and apricot trees, a mature herb garden complete with a bay leaf tree, grape vines, a variety of cacti and other flowers and a seasonal rotating crop of fruit and vegetables. She also maintains a number of different berry bushes and a hummingbird garden to boot. Currently available in April are lemons, leeks, chives, brussel sprouts and since dill weed grows like an actual weed here, it’s almost always available. I got off exceptionally easy because my mom is Rose’s bff, so I helped pull and clean my own leeks, brussel sprouts and chives. I also took home 7 lemons and aloe vera. I ended up making potato and leek soup and brought Rose a big bowl of it to pay her back. I also took a Thompson grape vine here because it wasn’t happy in the shaded area it was originally planted in.
