I have crossed the Church Lane bridge quite often in my life and most people don’t look at it like a bridge, but simply an overpass for the Septa trains. I like this bridge because it goes pretty high, you actually look down on the rooftops. Off to the right you can see one of my favorite spots, Carlette’s Hideaway and now if you look to the left you will see one of my fave new eating places, Cajun Fried Chicken. I have passed this spot so many times and I finally decided to see what they were all about. The style of food they serve here is Caribbean /Southern Creole cuisine. Upon entering, I was reminded of a small down-home restaurant in the deep south or a traditional jerk hut in Jamaica. There was a screen door to keep the flies out and it was hot inside, that’s okay though, I came here to get my grub on, not cool off. A pretty young lady with a warm smile named Becky greeted me as soon as I entered. She handed me a menu and asked me if I had any questions, I looked over the menu and saw Fried Pork Creole and I had no questions for her. I love Creole cooking! I ordered that with collards and plantains. While waiting, I studied the menu more carefully and decided I wanted to substitute the plantains with the rice & beans… no problem Becky said. I saw the chef, her name is Ermine and she was preparing my meal and she made me smile, you can tell she’s the kind of lady that puts a ton of love in her food. After making several illegal«South Philly rolls» at stop signs on the way home, I sat down to eat. The pork was tender and the creole sauce set it off perfectly. The collards were tender and flavorful, the rice and beans were very good, smothered in a red sauce, and included was a no sauce crunchy cabbage slaw that was very fresh. The surprise of the dinner was the biscuit, a hot, gooey baked roll and I wished there were more! On my next trip there, I decided to try Ermine’s signature dish the Cajun fried chicken, I ordered the chicken wings because in my dreams I saw a chicken with 12 wings(Not a nightmare in my eyes) They were huge and very crispy with a spicy Cajun finish. They came with a Creole dipping sauce and they were magnificent. Cajun Fried Chicken was quite a find and I hope you get to experience the love.
