When I heard about the Old Town General Store, I immediately wanted to love it – and on visiting, in some ways I did. It has the small town vibe that’s lost in the vastness of ordinary grocery stores. We were welcomed by the owner as we entered, and there was a concert on the patio that evening after business hours(but for a $ 15 cover we did not attend). Many products were local, with the majority being form somewhere in the state of Michigan — and I really love that too. If you’re looking for a gift for a localvore, foodie, or Michigan-enthusiast, this is the place to go. Certainly, I’ll be doing some Christmas shopping here. However, this is hardly the place to go for affordable products, and the produce selection was sparse(although I understand that it’s dictated by supply, not by my demand). Many of the gourmet products could be found elsewhere for a bit cheaper. Although it was wonderful to have so many Michigan-y things in one place, something was lacking for me that I can’t quite put my finger on. Regardless, I’ll be back in the fall to reassess my complicated feelings.
