I stopped in to get meat for dinner one night. The meat selection is very small. The cuts are also small. It took two packages of pork chops to make dinner for two people because they were so small. The price wasn’t good either. For local grocery shopping I’ll stick with Beaver’s.

It’s a typical small town grocery store, with the same store brand as many others, ShurFine — which sells to independent grocers(few left, except in small towns). Same products as Western Family if you are from the west coast, or western Canada. Prices are bit higher than the humongo-giant King Soopers(they sell *furniture* there — go figure) that just opened in north Fort Collins 5 miles away, but instead of listening to a surly corporate manager berate a poor college student employee who tried to clock out 2 minutes early, you get the same folks who have worked at Overland Foods for years. They actually *care* about your response when they ask«How are you doing today, sir?» And…they have a their own Butcher. Yes! A skilled professional meatcutter who also makes their sausages, and smokes their beef jerky. The beef jerky is simply the best around… nothing like it anywhere in the northern front range that I have tried. The sausage makes their breakfast sandwiches the best in town, and at least 100 times better than McDonalds 5 miles down the road. Also, some local specialties like Nanita’s green chili sauce, and a few others that the big box grocers don’t carry. Small town business, nice folks, and a real Butcher. When leaving on a road trip, i divert to Overland Foods to buy a couple packs of their home-smoked jerky… even if it costs me 45 minutes of travel time. It’s that good.

2.5 stars. Well it is a grocery store. Besides that selection looks slim. No, that may be too harsh. Selection is basic. It gets the job done. To tell you the truth I am surprised that this place is still in business with very nearby Fort Collins and their numerous grocery stores at your disposal. I suppose it is good for the residents of Laporte where if they want a can of beans and don’t have any they can mosey on down to here and buy a can. This grocery store is fairly small and apparently they still rent out movies. While I did not specifically see any up for rent in my rush in I did see a letter posted at the register saying that they were not supposed to rent out to so and so because they had too many late fees. That kind of surprised me! The building on the outside does not look all that old(ok, maybe I do have a prejudice against old buildings, so sue me!) but the inside of the store it looks like it has been around for a long time. Which is a good thing I guess, peeps in Laporte supporting their local businesses. Me, well I live in Fort Collins so…
