Silver canvas is a wonderful knitting store which has been owned and operated for 33 years by proprietor Alice Giunta. Yes, it’s a yarn shop, and the yarns are beautiful, plentiful and up to date, but it’s also a place to create custom knitting projects that meet your requirements as well as satisfy your imagination. Alice’s decades of expertise enable her to take your measurements and create an individually customized pattern with hand selected yarns. There are also plenty of books filled with the latest designs to make. The store is small and gets crowded, but that’s usually with people getting help from Alice with their projects. If only we could clone her! The atmosphere is warm and friendly, with patrons helping and inspiring each other. With knitting stores disappearing rapidly, larchmont is lucky to have Alice and the Silver Canvas.

I cannot get enough of this shop. Alice has been knitting, crocheting, and doing other textile work for most of her life and it shows in the quality of her work and teaching expertise. Although somewhat limited in space, there is a huge assortment of yarn from acrylics to cashmere and everything in between. It can get crowded at times but that’s only because the regulars(who are very helpful, themselves) are so dedicated to this shop. **12/12/13 Update Alice recently reorganized the layout for the shop and it has made everything much more spacious and accommodating! It’s truly a unique gem in the neighborhood!

This is a teeny space crammed with lots of yarn and books and booklets. When I went, there was a class going on, so to look at the yarns, I had to weave through the people sitting right smack in the middle of the store. Not very comfortable. Apparently this shop was opened 30 years ago(early 1980s) and some of the merchandise looks to be from that era… If nothing else, the place seems tired and disorganized. I couldn’t tell who was working there and who was just a very helpful customer or student. So I guess that’s a plus.
