Dr. Michael Oechsel is a superlative orthopedic surgeon. I have been a patient of his for several years addressing various sports injuries including my most recent meniscus tear in my knee that required surgery for full recovery. At each visit, Dr. Oechsel was professional, directly evaluated my situation with care and in detail, and was clear about my options and the expected outcome for each choice. Both pre and post operation Dr. Oechsel was reassuring and sincerely available for questions or concerns. I felt I was in good, professional care at all times and would highly recommend him for any orthopedic needs.

Dr. Oechsel is a professional orthopedic surgeon who spends the time to educate, evaluate, and listens to all your concerns regarding the most appropriate treatment for your injury. A feeling of «trust» is immediately establish during his initial patient evaluation, based on his mannerism and his professional knowledge which he is willing to share with you. His bedside manner is sincere, empathetic, and reassuring during pre and post surgery. He provides reasonable outcomes with accurate time lines of making a person«whole» again.

Dr. Oechsel is the worst. He screwed up my father’s hip replacement so bad that it had to be redone by someone else. To make matters worse, he lied about the details of the surgery and omitted information about how the surgery had gone poorly. He is also an asshole of a person with no bedside skills at all. Don’t use this guy for anything!!!

Dr. Oechsel was the orthopedic surgeon on duty one Saturday in 2003 when I came in with a compound fracture of my Ulna(at the elbow) from a cycling accident. I was told on the sly by one of the nurses that I was lucky that he was on call. I soon found out just how lucky I was. Apparently Marin General doesn’t have the greatest reputation, but he does… and deservedly so. He is a straightshooter that does incredible work. He told me then how serious my injury was and that I’d be staying there for three days and why. I was treated very well by all(one of the attendants was also a cyclist and gave me the option to save my New Zealand joursey instead of him cutting it off me), Dr. Oechsel did a terrific job and my follow up with him was always informative and helpful. He’s not a touch-feely doctor, so don’t expect to be coddled, but that doesn’t matter to me. I just want the straight scoop. And that’s what you get. My favorite quote from him when many months later I asked if I could start riding again: «You can ride, you just can’t fall». I went back to him the following year because the occasional pain in my left shoulder wouldn’t go away, most likely caused by the same accident. It turned out to be torn cartiledge. He suggested that I focus on PT and try to avoid surgery, stating that he’d love to do it, but the recovery would be much worse than anything I was dealing with. The PT worked and I continue to keep up with my rotator exercises as part of my workout routine. By all means, you’re in good hands!
