Bummed the doors are locked 10 minutes before closing time, it’s one of my favorite shops.

Staff is ridiculously rude. Witnessed them scolding someone’s child for simply touching the clothing. Won’t be going back.

Currently 40% + 20%(= 52%) off sale items! Really nice stuff, somewhat ridiculously priced. Sales are good! It’s nice to have a place like this in Marin, as nice men-focussed stores tend to be concentrated in the hipster strongholds of the Mission and Berkeley.(They have women’s stuff too, and the obligatory trendy(and great!) Japanese ceramics.) If you’re personally offended by shirts costing over $ 100, you will not enjoy this store, and I’m a bit unhappy with a place calling itself ‘Unionmade’ if all the clothes aren’t, y’know, *union made*, but the brands on sale seem generally respectable and made in countries with reasonable labor practices.

My go-to for clothing. «Unionmade» may be a misnomer, as there are some«made in China» — but designers are American and Japanese staples, and 80%+ of what you’ll find will either be made in the USA or Japan. This is an expansion off of the flagship in the city. Selection is smaller, but the pieces they have are good. From what I’ve seen in Marin thus far, it’s the best men’s clothing haberdasher in the north bay. Here you’ll find Gitman Vintage, New England Shirt Co., Tellason Denim, Alden Shoes, among other staples.

The clothes: You can expect to find a limited(read: curated) selection of vintage-looking American man type stuff. Chukka boots, wool button downs, jeans, specialty grooming products — you get the idea. The quality on this stuff is top-notch. The people: Nice dudes who dress nicely and don’t put on a big act to sell you stuff. I definitely felt welcome to browse without someone looking over my shoulder, but help is there when you need it. The price: It’s expensive. Duh. This stuff is super high quality. One or two notches above what you’d expect to find at Nordstrom.

Friendly employees that don’t mind chatting about cool clothing and Alden shoes. This location does not have nearly the selection as the San Francisco location however it’s a nice location and shopping mall and they can likely get things from the other locations for you. Pricey for sure, but they do stock some nice unique and rare American heritage pieces. If you appreciate this, you will dig this store. If you don’t, there is no way you will like this store.

When I first heard about a store called Unionmade I thought — wow a shop that sells clothes made in union factories. I mean with a name that simple and literal what else could you be selling? Well it turns out the name is just a name as not much here is union made. In turn, any notions of blue collar values I had were also completely off base. It turns out Unionmade is a mens clothing store carefully built upon a whole set of cliches and contradictions and I’m not just talking about the name of the shop. For instance take their ‘work-shirts’. A work-shirt should be durable and functional and economical. A work shirt shouldn’t cost 350 bucks and it sure as hell shouldn’t be dry clean only. And work boots — you should carry a line of them but you shouldn’t «curate a collection of workboots.» Then there’s the vintage record playing jazz albums in the background… and the ironic knit sweaters… and the dude behind the counter who uses mustache wax. and the carhartt jackets made exclusively for union made.zzzzzzzz. These are competing ideas and the whole thing seems a little tired.
