Fitness plus Halloween spirit! Arrived to Floyd Lamb Park for this 5K, and it was covered in Halloween decorations and full of vendors and kid-friendly games for the expo afterward. Didn’t stick around for that, but the 5K itself was a little less organized than others– packet pickup lines went slowly, we started a few minutes late, and I’m still waiting on timing results*, but the course and aid stations were manned by cheerful and friendly staff, signage was clear, and the route itself is beautiful. Participants were encouraged to come in costume, and both kids and dogs were welcome. Options for 5K or 10K course loop available. FLP is one of my favorite spots in Vegas for a run– parking is easy, there’s no entry fee that early, and the second leg of the run circles the lake. Would participate again– met up with fellow Unilocaler Cassandra B who has done this a few years now, and we both purchased with a discount on Groupon. Site also references that groups(5+) could contact organizers for a discount code. Besides access to the run itself, with timing, participants got a tech shirt and various coupons(including free coffee) at packet pickup– and the finish line included handouts of Real Water and the Jack O Lantern finisher’s medal. Rumor has it Subway and Jamba Juice were giving out food on site as well. *Rating bumped from four stars to three based on wait time for timing results. Other run organizing groups in town offer the info by text or computer lookup at the finish line, and somehow it took 24 hours for this to be provided by Elemental Race Timing. Not thrilled.

This was my second time running the Trick or Trot 5k. The course is set in the picturesque Floyd Lamb Park and is an easy flat course that’s half gravel, half asphalt. At this time of the year, the weather is beautiful and runners are treated to sights of bunnies, peacocks, and geese while running along the course. For the sweet tune of a $ 21 Groupon, registration included a unisex tech t-shirt, a finisher’s medal, and a timed race. At the finish line, runners receive a bottle of water, a KIND granola bar, and a mini turkey sandwich compliments of Subway. Halloween costumes are encouraged and there’s actually a costume contest at the end of the race with at least 4 different categories to compete in. There’s also a family friendly fair complete with inflatable slides, face painting, the works. Volunteers deck out the vendor area of the park in Halloween decorations, adding to the festivity. Registration is a bit rocky and could be improved a bit with better signage. For those running the 10k, individuals had to run the 5k race twice. This actually was a bit of an issue because 5k finishers ended up blocking the way of 10k runners. Compounding this issue was the fact that 5k and 10k runners started the race at the same time(8AM). This race is still fairly new and it seems like the organizers need to work out a few kinks. Other than that, this race is super fun to participate in. I’m glad more races are being held in Northwest Vegas! Unilocal100CHALLENGE2015: #247
