It is not too often I am afforded the opportunity to meet two Unilocal friends, in real life, at one event. Luckily, such was the case at this UYE Hike: conceived, birthed, and raised by the lovely Khatherine. She would be one Unilocaler I was meeting for the first time after some time as e-friends; the other would be Lawrence(who could be nicknamed Stretch, for his legs are as long as that of a power forward’s). We came — we waited for potential latecomers(who never showed, as usual) — and, we conquered. Several had been on this specific hike previously but not seen the city skyline(payoff). I had been on this hike but been oblivious as to the tanks: so, this was my first time seeing them. For the record: I had no clue what a Blastoise was. I thought it looked like the profile of an upright monkey protruding from the rock. Eating at Bachi post-hike was a real treat too. Can’t wait to do it again(group hike, not Bachi). — E

Another Sunday, another hike with friends at Red Rock. This time, Khatherine was our hostess. We met inside the park at Sandstone Quarry, hiking to Calico Tanks for a fantastic view of the Las Vegas valley. The crew today consisted of Ka-hatherine, Mel, Norm, Edwin, Lawrence, Lori, and myself, plus various other hikers enjoying the great weather, some with their dogs. This was a fairly easy hike, but it was still a nice cardio workout. We spent about two hours total at the park and then all headed over to Bachi Burger for lunch with special guests Victoria Q. and my teen. They both wanted to join us for the hike, but sometimes sleep is more important. It was Lawrence and Khatherine’s first time at Bachi, so we all were present for this historic moment; they must be the last two Asians in Las Vegas to eat there. It was my son’s first time sharing a meal with a bunch of his mother’s Unilocal friends and he was amazed to learn that even Norm was a Unilocaler; my son thinks all Unilocalers are Asians and only take pictures of their food. Thanks for another fun time, Ka-hatherine – Valley of Fire next with Norm!

UYE hikes on the weekend are starting to become a common theme and I’m all for it. Nothing beats a hike at Red Rock with good weather and great people. Seems like everyone else thought the same thing since Red Rock was packed this morning/afternoon. Unilocalers, locals, pets, tourist, athletes in training… you name it, they were here to enjoy what Red Rock has to offer. Our hike started with Khatherine, Norm, Edwin, Lori, Lawrence, and Terri R. By the way, nice to meet you Lori. Our hike was at Calico Tanks. I’ve done this hike before, but never pass the actual tanks and never knew that I we can get a full view of our city once you pass it, hah. Once we got to the top, we took pictures and grabbed a snack. The hike wasn’t tough, but still rewarding. After the hike, we all met up at Bachi for some post-hike grubbin’. PS: UYE Hikes… I like! It’s always a good day when you hike with some Unilocal friends. Today, Khatherine hosted this UYE to Calico Tanks in Red Rock Canyon. Along for the hike were Edwin P, Lori T, Terri R, Mel C, and Lawrence M. It was a sunny, warm, blue sky day – in other words – a normal day in Southern Nevada. The Calico Tanks Trail is a good one to do. It’s an easy/moderate trail with a payoff of having a view of the Las Vegas Valley from the turnaround point. At the halfway point, we had some great conversation that provided a lot of laughs. We asked some young mad to take a group photo of us and he kindly did so and it came out well. We had some snacks while chatting. It’s also a great place to take a selfie. After returning to the cars, we all went to Bachi Burger where we had a big lunch which was enough for the rest of the day – well almost so! Thanks to Khatherine for putting together this fun UYE. Thanks to Unilocal folks on this hike. Nice to meet you Lawrence and I hope you join us on more UYE hikes.
