UYE-Steppin’ Out: Taco Trek and Cool Down Round 2!!!

wOOt wOOt! If it weren’t for this taco trek and cool down I wouldn’t have tried some of the places we went since I am partial to Tacos El Gordo. First stop was Sinaloa and seeing what they had to offer. They make fresh flour tortillas right on the truck! I enjoyed the pastor taco here and catching up with familiar faces and meeting new ones. At first it seemed we might get rained out, but nope! Then we headed off to our 2^nd stop at Taqueria El Pastorcito which I was glad about because Nelson Q. always says they have the best pastor and I was curious to try their «suadero» (brisket). Taqueria El Pastorcito was popping and offered a covered seating area that allow us Unilocalers (to basically takeover) to have a nice area to sit and chit chat. We were all burning up as the humidity didn’t give us any slack so some of us decided to go over to Los Tacos and some went over to La Flor de Michoacan to be inside where it was cool. I was pretty stuffed so I didn’t order anything from Los Tacos and instead sat and watched my hubby eat and saved what hunger I had left for Snow Flake Shavery! Unilocal took over yet another local business and what a sweet time it was. After a tasty dessert, some of us headed over to Kilroy’s and enjoyed a beer, laughs and good times. I missed the first taco trek so I was glad when Nelson Q. set another one up! Thanks!!!

Taco Trek was the first UYE I have attended. And what a UYE it was. Good friends, good food and good times. What more needs to be said? How about this, Nelson and all the others who turned out are a lot of fun to hang out with. Pair that with some good eats (street tacos, ice cream, etc) and you are in for a great night.
Directions: It starts at Decatur and Lake Mead at Sinaloa. Gather slowly but surely and chow down on tacos with fresh made tortillas. Then caravan over to El Pastorcito on Charleston. Order, sit at the available seating areas, eat and repeat if necessary. Then make your way to La Flor de Michoacan for dessert. Sample all the ice cream before deciding or just stand around looking lost (that was my game plan). Order a bowl of ice cream that you really don’t need as you are already full from tacos. Socialize a little more before deciding the night is not over yet. Next, head to SnowFlake for more dessert. A dessert of a whole different variety. Finally, turn at 11:00 PM in a minor food coma but with a smile on your face. Find out a few days later that the night did not end there for those who chose to stick around. Kick yourself for giving up early but still happy for what you did experience.
This was fun. I look forward to doing it again some time.

Being from Southern California I know a good street taco. This was a UYE my wife and I couldn’t pass up. The taco trek started out at Sinaloa and the parking lot was full of regular customers but Unilocalers made a nice dent in the line. I had some asada tacos that were good enough to go back for. We then headed over to Nelson Q.‘s favorite taco spot Taqueria El Pastorcito where they gave us samples some and I had yet more asada tacos. It was hot sitting outside so some of us headed over to Los Tacos and some headed to La Flor de Michoacán. I had some (you guessed it) asada tacos at Los Tacos and then we all met up at Snow Flakes Shavery. It was a Unilocal takeover and a good time was had by all. I met some new Unilocalers and got to catch up with other Unilocalers I met at previous events. Thanks to Nelson Q. for putting together another fun UYE!

What do you get when you combine 21 hungry Unilocalers, 3 Taco stops, 2 dessert spots, and a local’s bar? About 6 and a half hours of nothing but fun times!
We all met up at an already crowded Sinaloa at 6:30 pm, where the Cabeza tacos rule! luckily parking wasn’t a hassle and we were all able to chow down on some tasty tacos.
Taqueria El Pastorcito was the next vendor we hit up, and this place was a hit! The workers are always happy to see us and always check to see that we’re all taken care of. Their Al Pastor rules, their Suadero was tasty, and the fresh Guava Agua Fresca was Soooo refreshing! This seemed to be the favorite stop of everyone yet again. Some of us split up to Los Tacos to try their tasty asada tacos and popular Campechanas while some stayed back to finish eating.
As they say, time FLIES when you’re having fun, and before you know it, it was already 8:30pm, and La Flor de Michoacán closes its doors at 9 so we chose to book it to La Flor de Michoacán and meet up with the rest of the gang at LFM. We lucked out yet again because there was no line, so we packed the ice cream shop sampling cool ice cream flavors like cheese, pine nut, rose, and guava sorbet, and citrica, cebada, mamey sapote, and alfalfa agua frescas. We bum rushed the benches outside and enjoyed our treats.
Reopening after problems with their A/​C and ceiling, I decided to add Snow Flakes Shavery to our itinerary of stops, and no complaints here because Mike and Will serve up the best snow ice in town AND they were open until 11pm… SUH-​WEET!!! I killed a large coconut snow with fresh mangoes, egg custard, and condensed milk. Everyone else enjoyed their creations, and yet again, it was a Unilocal takeover at another local business!
All of this sugar seemed to stir up another craving, so a few of us went to Monta Ramen and the rest of us decided to grab a cold one oh, about 20 steps away at Kilroy’s. After we rang the doorbell, we got buzzed in, and our cool bartender took care of us right from the start. We took up one end of the bar, threw back a few, and a great evening was had by all… See you at the next installment of the «Steppin’ Out» series!!! ALOHA!!!

Earl and I didn’t expect to stay out as long as we did, but we sure glad we did because it was definitely fun times! Our first stop was Sinaloa. Earl and I arrived half an hour late, but we was in time to try the cabeza and tripa. Cabeza was good, but the tripa, we will pass next time. It wasn’t as crispy like what we wanted and it left an after taste (bad) in our mouth.
However, at the next stop, Taqueria El Pastorcito, we got some delicious taco al pastor and the freshest guava agua fresca I had ever had! We also got the taco al pastor with queso… too heavy for my taste.
Thirst («Third») stop was La Flor de Michoacan. My FAVORITE!!! Unique ice cream and agua fresca flavors. We got to sample whatever we want to sample. I ended up ordering a scoop of rose and a scoop of pine nut icecream in a waffle cone, topped with rice crispies. Earl got the Alfafa drink. He loved it so much that he finished it before I can get my sipping on. Luckily, Nelson came to the Earl’s rescue and shared some of his Alfafa drink with me. Yes, this drink is delicious. Though, all other flavors are delicious as well. I would have gotten my own drink if La Flor wasn’t already closed at that time (they close at 9pm).
Fourth stop was Snow Flake Shavery on Spring Mountain. Earl and I got the regular size Cantaloupe with egg pudding, mochi, and condensed milk. Super refreshing and strong yummy cantaloupe taste and scent. I am glad I got the regular size because Sylvia got the large, and shared hers with me. Well more like she took a few bites, super full, and I said «I will eat your snow shavery.» I finished hers.
Fifth stop was the spot that I never thought I would enjoy… a BAR! Kilroy’s was next door and the bartender was super attentive and awesome. We even got freshly popped popcorn to enjoy with our choice of beverage.
Big Mahalo to Nelson and Sylvia for leading and introducing us to so many awesome places. What a way to spend 6.5 hours… you guys rock! And of course, it was a blast to hang out with almost everyone at the stops!

The sky was heavy with gray but it didn’t rain on our parade! Woohoo! The weather was perfect for some trekking and taco-​ing. Rendezvous at Sinaloa. It was my first bite of tripa (pork intestine, not tripe) and pineapple salsa. I am in love with the latter, that and pickled onions really compliment strong flavored meat. My lil man kept running around and it was hard to balance the tacos and coke bottle and chatting and photos. Note: Buy retractable leash for toddler.
Our next stop was at Taqueria El Pastorio. I adore this place. Yummy smoky smells and lively Spanish music greet you as you come near. Their Al pastor meat is DA BOMB. Tender and tasty and in my opinion, unrivaled. Their fresh guava juice is a great compliment to the strong flavors and Vegas heat. Anthony and Regina are ready to have kids. Separately. Thanks for keeping Jaden company. :)
We weren’t able to swing by Los Tacos, but we finally made it to La Flor de Michoacan (which was on my to do list) — yey! This is what I love about any food place — understatement, variety, service with a smile and satisfaction! I ordered the chocolate and cheese and was mucho happy with the flavors! I know, it’s a weird combination for others, but don’t sweat it until you try it! Their cheese ice cream has a faint savory/​salty flavor and Christina was right, it was close to cream cheese. (I adore your Citraca drink by the way wifey!).
After some licking/​eating, joking around and Jaden reprimanding Anthony for drag queen photo posing, my little tribe call it a night, and the rest of the gang head off to Snowflake Shavery. We’ve tried that stuff in Manila, and it’s hecka good, but next time we’ll join you for alcohol night caps! Thanks for the good grub and laughs guys :)

We met at Sinaloa on the northwest corner of W. Lake Mead and N. Decatur Boulevards. Sinaloa is a food wagon that’s parked at a place called Billy Mac’s Auto Shop.
The crew were going from here to Taqueria El Pastorcito on East Charleston. I wanted to go to Los Tacos for a seafood cocktail so I left the group to go east. A friend followed me to East Charleston and he made it to Taqueria El Pastorcito.
After my cocktail at Los Tacos, it was off to La Flor de Michoacan. I was afraid Nelson et. al. wouldn’t make it by closing at 9 because I left at 8:40 and they weren’t yet there.
Another great event! Thanks to nelson and Sylvia! You’re the best!

It’s totally cheating that I didn’t really «trek.» But I knew going in that I just wanted to try Sinaloa.
Nelson’s events always have the best turnouts. We pretty much took over that northwest corner of Lake Mead and Decatur. Even without us though, Sinaloa has a good following.
I had my fill after the Cabeza, Lengua, and Tripa tacos. I couldn’t initially tell the difference between the Cabeza and the Lengua. It didn’t matter because they were both great. The Tripa, even though I did not ask for them to be extra crispy, had a nice and crispy exterior. Definitely not for everyone, but very tasty indeed.
I’m sure my fellow cohorts are having fun at whatever taco place they might be at now.
