Michigan First Credit Union

Michigan FIrst is a beautiful facility that has served my needs for the past several years. A few notes:
— They have a coin thing there free to members and will deposit money right into your account. My boyfriend and I recently went on a date here on our lunch hours to return the coins he had been collecting for about three years, almost $ 1000!
— The ATMs let you withdraw any amount in $ 5 denominations and you may choose which assortment of bills you get! This is especially useful if you are going to a strip club or averse to $ 20s (weird, right?)
— Employees are always friendly, they do not always have the answers to my questions but are friendly — so I’ll give it a pass.
— I used my points I accumulate from direct deposit to pay for my checks
— If you need a new debit card they can print a new one out for you on the spot
— ATM drive thru is always at least 9 cars deep on weekends, so don’t say I didn’t warn ya
I am currently in the process of applying for an auto loan from them so I will update this with a negative review if they decline me (just kidding, I have way more Unilocal-​tegrity than that people!)

The expression goes, «What have you done for me lately.» I joined up with this Credit Union due to a past positive experience with another credit union. My opinion is that a Credit Union is better your typical bank. I applied for a loan and was turned down. Not upset at this but I did get one at the other CU which makes me say hmmmm. My first situation that I was really concerned about was due to a charge that I thought did not look correct. I called the Credit union and they told me that I would have to come into the branch to remedy the problem. Really? I work during the day and also live a nice distance. By the time I got into the branch my account may be empty. Thank god it ended up not being that serious. The staff is typically friendly although I have run into some not so friendly attitudes. The only reason I am still here is because I get direct deposit and I have bills tied to this account. The other CU I was with was much better. They have given me loans, assisted me and always have a friendly attitude. All I can say by comparison is I have had better and I am in the process of moving my finances.

I grew up using credit unions, and stopped when I moved to New York, where there didn’t really seem to be many. My options were basically the big national banks. I suppose that some of my elation at being a Michigan First member has a lot to do with the fact that I was in an abusive (financial) relationship, and now that’s no longer the case, so now, when I have any encounter with MF (coincidentally, my initials), I’m positively thrilled.
The hundreds of dollars I spent on fees with Chase and Citi? No longer a feature of my financial landscape. Surly tellers and borderline hostile telephone operators? Nope, haven’t run into that either at MF. Using a commercial retail bank versus using a credit union is like night and day. I would never go back to using one of the big box banks, and I would strongly encourage anyone who qualifies to open an account at Michigan First and to move as much of their business as humanly possible over there. Ultimately, you’ll be very, very glad you did.

After being a member since the mid-​1970s, I closed my savings and checking accounts about 4 – 5 years ago and opened new ones at another credit union. I continued to use my Visa credit card from MFCU without a problem, paying the balance each month.
A month or so ago a new credit card and number was issued and I started to use that. Then last Saturday… I start finding that the card is not being accepted.
Called the service number on Tuesday to hear that MFCU has closed the card. The reason? The policy that credit cards can’t be held by someone without a savings or checking account. Fair enough. But it doesn’t speak well of their systems to wait 4 – 5 years to apply the policy (I guess triggered by first issuing the new card, even if late). And it certainly does not speak well of their customer service to close the card without notice to the card user… what’s with that?
Needless to say, I won’t be opening new accounts just to kee the MFCU credit card. Off ot my new credit union today.

Good credit union that is good to its members, they also hire people in the local community to help the local economy. I have been with them for over for years now and will never go back to the big banks.

Technically the closest Credit Union to my house, I prefer not to come here as often as the others. To me, the building is super duper cramped… although honestly it’s a large building. Maybe it’s the bad lighting and wall paint that makes it seem tight… I really don’t know. Either way, expect super long lines here because this is where most teachers and union workers go to do their banking. That’s another thing that bothers me about this location. The service just always seem slower than it should be. If I had to chose (or recommend) faster service, head out to the Southfield branch.
