Aloisio Silva Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

After my husband insisted in signing my 3 year old up for Jiu Jitsu, I gave in. We stopped by since this place was the closest to home and I’m glad we did! My son is one of the smallest ones in the class so it takes a lot more work to help him. I thought that maybe the instructors would be a little bothered or mad about it but I was completely wrong! Every single one of them takes their time with the kids and are extremely patient! He’s done so well in the little time he’s been here. He loves it and asks me all day long to bring him here.

My partner and I have been wanting our 8-​year old son to start training in some sort of martial arts for self defense purposes, to boost his self-​esteem, and to work on his sensitivity issues. We looked into Aikido, Brazilian Jiujitsu, Judo, Karate, and Taekwondo. We are so grateful to have come across the Aloisio Silva Brazilian Jiu-​Jitsu Academy. He has been training there since April of this year and he absolutely loves it! This came to a surprise to me considering he was hesitant about doing any kind of martial arts, and at times he has a fear of getting physically hurt.
The professors there are extremely experienced and they have shown such compassion, love, and patience for all the kids who train there, regardless of how long they’ve been there. It hasn’t even been a year since my son has started training there, but we have already encompassed the Aloisio Silva «Family» atmosphere. I have seen a change in my son over the past few months, especially in regards to his self-​confidence, and I owe that to the Silva Academy!

My son and I have been coming here for a few years and absolutely love it. Its great for kids of all ages, its great for adults of all ages. Jon is an amazing professor You will never meet anyone as wonderful, patient, and kind to train your kid. The facility is large and the kids have a great time learning a martial art. I also train, here and there in the adult class once again Jon Is a great instructor breaking down the moves so even unathletic people like me can learn a martial art and work on my weight. I would highly recommend training here.

I looked at a lot of different Jiu Jitsu schools in Southbay and for me, this one is by far the best value. They have many different contract/​payment options which are all posted on their website. I ended up paying about half of what I was paying at my previous school. Another big deciding factor for me in choosing this school is that they have a strong no gi curriculum. Most of the other jiu jitsu schools I looked at only offer no gi classes seasonally or maybe one class a week. At Aloisio Silva there are regular no gi classes every week. Atmosphere is really casual and laid back. People that train here are generally pretty cool. Lot’s of kids train here and there’s a regular group of younger girls that train too. As a smaller guy I like that there are plenty of other feather weights and light weights to train with. It can be a bummer when you are one of the only small guys at the academy!
One thing to keep in mind with this school is they are very competition/​sport jiu jitsu oriented. It’s clear the moment you walk in and see the walls are covered with trophies and medals. The school is affiliated with the North American Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation which hosts a lot of tournaments and they are definitely motivated to get students to participate and compete.
Instruction is not as structured or detail oriented as some other schools I’ve trained at but I feel it’s really what you make of it. If you ask questions, work with your partner, and are more of an active participant you will get a lot more out of it.
I do wish they would clean the mats more frequently, I’d like to see it done after every class.
Overall, I think it’s a good jiu jitsu school to check out, especially if you’re on a budget.

I absolutely LOVE this place. Everyone and everything is about family, and you feel immediately taken in by them in such a short while. Everyone is so welcoming and helpful — and they are genuinely happy to see someone grow and excel.
The place is run by a family of BJJ pros, one of which is a world renowned grand master. I am impressed with the awards and the titles, and most impressed by how much Brazilian jiu-​jitsu is a part of their own lives — not a business or a paycheck.
Both of my children had trained here and learned so much. They have an amazing children’s program and several classes for adults of every level. And tons of ways to compete and put into practice all that you’ve learned.
Some of those other places — UFC for instance — are partly about hype and name recognition. The Silvas are the real deal and honest to goodness terrific people.

Trained here for a couple years a little while back and I have to say it was well worth it. Lot of mat space, lot of rolling, and the best prices in town make this a great school to train at and learn bjj without the high prices/​commitment of other «big name» schools.
This school is run by the silva family with the head instructor being Joao Silva (son of Aloisio). They offer gi and no-​gi jiu jitsu upstairs and kickboxing downstairs. They do focus a little bit on tournament competition so their instruction reflects that approach somewhat (lot of rolling and focus on tournament legal techniques). Joao is a very likeable guy. He’s a smaller guy so his jiu jitsu is very technical and great for smaller people like myself. You know the techniques are effective when you see Joao applying them to much bigger opponents.
Pros:
–Great pricing: I went to four different bjj schools and found aloisio’s to be the cheapest. I paid a year up front and got about $ 80 a month.
–Great Workout/​Training: you will get the opportunity to roll with and spar with people from day 1 in a friendly environment. This is the best way to improve your bjj and I’ve never improved as much as I did while training here.
–Lot of mat space
Cons:
–Kickboxing school is kinda separate from bjj school and you have to pay an additional $ 50 to train both schools (I stuck with just the bjj). At that price, this school becomes less of a steal.
–Relaxed Instruction: the teaching is what you make of it. Joao has a tendency to show a lot of techniques and then turn you loose to work on them. Not always the most hands-​on, fine tuning kind of instructor. If you don’t speak up and ask questions or ask for help in certain areas you may not improve as fast and get lost in the shuffle. Joao is totally responsive and will help you every time… but you need to speak up because he’s pretty laid back.
Conclusion:
Great bjj school at a great price. Pay small gym prices but get big gym mat space and facilities. Only issue: instruction can lose students a little bit if you don’t speak up.

Friendly, knowledgable staff and a huge selection of items for sale. Prices are fair. Classes are taught with enthusiasm.

There’s a lot of good and often-​heard reasons to train bjj — a great workout, competitive outlet, discipline, humility, self-​defense, etc — and training here with Joao and the silva team certainly promote all of these positive things. I really enjoyed my three years training here, and miss it now that I’ve switched jobs and no longer in the area.
Would definitely recommend anyone who has any curiosity in bjj to swing by and try out a class. Theres plenty of mat space, and and plenty of diversity on the mats with students spanning all walks of life and jiu jitsu experience level.

Great gym if you are looking to get into shape or become a fighter. They also offer Kickboxing and Judo. The gym is fully equipped and offers one free class. I personally been training for over a year and consider it my second home.

While I have not attended classes at the school here, I have however shopped at their store which is downstairs from the gym. A nice selection of grappling shorts, gis, and protective gear is sold here. Their prices seem pretty decent. Since there are not many other martial arts supply stores in the area I don’t really have much to base this on but, it did not seem overly priced. Shorts were roughly about $ 40-​$ 50 a pair, gis were about $ 80. At the front counter they have DVDs for sale, instructional, UFC, Pride, and etc. They also sell books and magazines and pretty much anything having to do with Jiu Jitsu. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable.
