Stopped in here for a quick, but hearty breakfast while on a road trip. It was a good spot! I had an omelette with lots of fresh veggies. Their bread is delicious and fresh, you can tell they use high quality ingredients. We went on a Sunday morning and just beat a large crowd, so be prepared to wait in line if you come at prime time. I didn’t have one of their cinnamon rolls but they smelled great and they are HUGE!

Oh man! Getting a quick breakfast in Lawrence? Highly suggest stopping by this spot. We all got the breakfast taco, which was in a large single flour tortilla that took up half of the plate — super good. It comes with feta but I switched it out for cheddar(duh). Simple breakfast but it was all really tasty. We also split a cinnamon bun that was incredible — on the chewier side, but still very very good. The crowd was an eclectic mix of locals, students, young and old, and it’s more like fast casual than a restaurant. The vibe overall was very casual.

Too crowded, poor service, use to be great in the 1990’s has lost it’s charm. Seems dated and food seems to lack flavor. Bread products taste mass produced for a small bakery. I found the place lack luster and dirty. The breakfast was half way decent, but too many people, place needs to relocate to properly accommodate the number of people who are row stupid to quit using them out of local hometown ignorant habit. I am finding this at 98% of the restaurants on Mass Street or near by area. Over ran with Topeka ill mannered hicks and obnoxious Johnson CoUNTy people. Those people ruined Weston, Mo. would not it be nice if they chose another small town to ruin, move on to Baldwin.

Perfect! I attend KU and go about every other day… Lots of great options. I switch between the Roast beef and cheddar with the turkey and cranberry. I only buy bread from here as well and always have a loaf of country French! Everything is worth trying, super friendly staff, plenty of parking around, as I said before… Perfect!

Breakfast, lunch, or dinner… It never disappoints! Must try: Breakfast– biscuits and gravy of course. I always add scrambled eggs and hot sauce on mine. The cinnamon rolls are huge and delicious. Lunch: Turkey cranberry, Croque Monsieur, and even the peanut butter and jelly is awesome. Empanadas are usually pretty good too, depending on the flavor that day. Dinner: They change the menu monthly, but fried chicken on Wednesdays is always a go to. However, chicken pot pies with a little hot sauce on it is my favorite! I obviously eat here way too much.

cute & comfy little breakfast spot nestled along Mass St. a few random notes: –my husband and I went on a Saturday morning at about 10am and it was quite bustling. there aren’t too many tables, and I ended up having to walk laps around(aka stalk) the vicinity to see if people were done eating so we could take their table. the people love Wheatfields. –they give you a slice of delectable homemade bread with your order. –don’t get the biscuits and gravy unless you are really into peppered sausage. –the coffee is GOOD. –they serve hash browns. huge plus. –the staff was friendly. –definitely more home-y than trendy, which is always a comfy feel.

Let me tell you about my love for biscuits and gravy. I love them; however, not too many places can actually get the awesome flavor of gravy down. I usually rely on just eating my sister’s biscuits and gravy because I can count on her. Other times, I’ve had to douse my meal with hot sauce to get any flavor. Mind you, I’m Mexican and I need the extra flavor in most of my meals. I’m visiting Lawrence for the first time as one of the biggest KU fans to have ever lived in California with absolutely zero ties to the university in my family. Anyways, I’m staying with my former math teacher from high school and volleyball coach and while she’s off teaching and after I dropped off her daughter at school, I found my way to WheatFields thanks to Unilocal. Upon arrival you order at the front and they basically have your food ready by the time you finish paying. It was interesting that I was given a cup and told to fill it with my coffee of choice and they would put the steamed milk in it for me. After that my half order of biscuits and gravy were ready and I sat down to eat and work on my laptop. At first bite, I was thoroughly impressed with the flavor and it only got better as I kept eating. They definitely add a noticeable kick to it and you can see the red pepper flakes in it. It’s not spicy though, it just has so much flavor. The half order was plenty enough for me, I can’t imagine how big the full order is. If all works out job wise, I hope to be coming back to WheatFields soon! Keep your fingers crossed for me!

If you just want a tea or coffee, Wheatfields has you covered. It’d you want a good breakfast, Wheatfields got you covered. If you want a unique sandwich made with fresh ingredients that you wouldn’t likely make at home because it takes too much trouble(veggie Reuben, anyone?), then Wheatfields got you covered. Plus, how can you beat the breadth of their fresh breads, rolls and muffins. Take come a sack!

Wheatfields has the BEST bread in the nation as well as a killer lemon tart. Lawrence is so lucky to have such an amazing bakery.

This is a fantastic and well run bakery. Being well run really makes a difference. I am going more and more frequently. Their pastries and breads are the best. Sadly, more and more bakeries have some really marginal pastries. Sometimes I leave a bakery wishing I just bought an expired Hostess product instead. NOTHERE! Everything is fresh and tasty. Amazingly — everything here is reasonably priced too! There are some fancy bread places in Lawrence and KC that charge over 8 and sometimes 12 dollars for a loaf of bread. This bread is just as good and usually at the $ 4 price point. No need to mortgage the house for a great loaf of bread or pastry. They have full meals here too. I’d give the meals a 4 star. Good food. Good price. I was excited to have their fried chicken special(one night a week only). It was pretty darn good but I hoped for better. Ditto for all their meals. I always leave with a smile and satisfied but I always expect the meals to be the same 5 star awesomeness as the bread and pastries. They have two lines too… if you just want bread of pastries or coffee… go to the short line! ENJOY

I was back in Lawrence for a few days and decided to pop into Wheatfields for breakfast on the way our. The scrambled egg and swiss on ciabatta was fantastic and reasonably priced.

I’ve probably purchased 3 – 400 loaves of bread over the years from Wheatfields, maybe more(likely). You don’t go back that many times unless you really like their product. Their breads are like no others in this town(or the midwest for that matter) and they were on the cutting edge of bringing great products made mostly of local ingredients long, long ago. Their desserts are sublime, particularly their carrot cake which is a favorite take home choice for a special treat. They have plenty of other selections but when you find something this good, why move on? For years I’d stop here once a week, sometimes twice, for a to go cup of coffee, one of their savory scones with cheese, and a fruit cup. Always good, always there, always a part of that awful morning drive I no longer have to make. I miss that to-go breakfast. I don’t miss the commute to Kansas City. And while most people think of it as a bakery, it’s the best breakfast in town for my money. Their biscuits and gravy are sinful in a great way. Lunch is wonderful as well, but in the evening, their dinners are strangely one of the better kept secrets. I’ll just keep that secret. When you’re around this long and the lines are still out the door on late Sunday mornings you know they’re doing it right. Is every visit here perfect? Nah, but that Epi and the Ciabattini paired with some great olive olive, sea salt and fresh cracked pepper at home is as much a part of the great meals in our house over the years as about anything else I can think of. So here’s a glass of vino raised to the hard working folks that rise in the middle of the night and make great bread on the backs of the strong coffee that’s served up here. May that wood fired bread oven never cease.

Bustling café in downtown Lawrence with excellent selection for lunch. We enjoyed quiche with great salad. Other options like soup and sandwiches looked appealing too. Full of locals, always a good sign.

A bakery that serves an affordable brunch with nice vegetarian options, Wheatfield’s is a staple of Lawrence that continues to serve it’s loyal customers well, including me, even though I no longer live in Lawrence. I was catching up with a friend who was moving to Lawrence. We met for breakfast at 7AM, and both ordered the same thing: the #4, the Primavera omelet. It comes loaded with zucchini, mushrooms, onions, and spinach. Wow, the internet is telling me that it’s spelled«omelet» inside the US and omelette elsewhere. I’m having a real moment of clarity because I don’t recall how I prefer to write it. What’s worse is that I don’t remember if I had this moment in another Unilocal review and wrote about it in the same way. Unimaginable. I also ordered two eggs sunny side up to see how well their eggs were done. Spoiler: they’re cooked pretty well and taste great. The omelette(trying to mix it up mid-review to feel out which I like more) had excellent roasted vegetables inside, and the egg itself was cooked well. My only gripe with Wheatfield’s is that the hashbrowns leave much to be desired. They’re fried well, but the potato is cut too thinly, is too greasy, and is overall not on the same level as their eggs, bread, and other offerings. I’ll definitely be back for breakfast anytime I visit Lawrence.

Much better than your average sandwiches. Call ahead for your lunch order to keep things moving quickly. The deli meat cuts are fresh and generous. The bread is top notch. The menu items are numbered which makes ordering over the phone even faster, assuming you don’t have too many substitutions.

Excellent bakery, pretty good diner. I might be a little bit of a penny pincher, but I felt like the food was a bit pricey for what you got. It’s not bad, but not amazing either It gets 4 stars because of the bakery side. The breads and desserts are simply wonderful.

They have the second best biscuits and gravy in town. It’s a great big biscuit with a plate full of gravy. I like some of their other things too like the carrot cake and cinnamon rolls. They are usually busy and seating is hard to come by but it is a nice place to get some good B&G.

I have dreams about their turkey cranberry sandwich and salad with quinoa. In fact, I’ve been scouring the internet for photos of their salad to recreate it, but to no avail. As a KU alum, I tried almost every restaurant/deli in town, but always came back to this tried-and-true favorite. I love meeting friends or bringing family to this casual spot and it’s always a priority to eat here whenever I’m in town. While they’re not reinventing the wheel here with their menu, everything is really fresh, high quality, and tasty. It’s a Lawrence gem.

Wheatfields is my guilty pleasure. I love going there for a delicious breakfast on the weekend. I wish their dining area was a bit larger, though. You have to wait in line and there is no table service but you really don’t mind. There is nothing fancy about this place bit is very bare bones but that makes it unique. The best part is the homemade bread is beyond delicious. Love the kalamata olive, the walnut sage, the rosemary. It’s all wonderful and baker fresh. You will not be disappointed. I make a special trip downtown just for their bread. YUM!

Yum! I’ve been a faithful customer at Wheatfields since my college days when they were newly opened(uh-oh now you’ll know how old I am!). Everything here is absolutely delicious. I’m not normally a bread person, but French and European style breads are where I make an exception. There is no better vessel for fresh butter or artisan cheese than a slice of crusty sourdough! They do bread the way it is meant to be done. So many flavors and varieties fill the racks and cases and it’s rare that a family holiday goes by when a loaf of Wheatfields bread isn’t present. I love going to the café for lunch. They have a great selection of sandwiches, although I frequently get the tuna salad. My mom almost always gets the turkey and cranberry sandwich on sage bread. My husband tends to be more adventurous and switches between a variety including the vegetarian Reuben and the Genoa salami and provolone. Their quiches, empanadas and salads are always reliable as well. Their pastries are my true weakness though. My favorites are the chocolate eclairs and lemon curd tart, although I’ve never had anything from the pastry case I wasn’t compelled to devour immediately. I just really have a hard time finding true French style eclairs with a correctly made choux pastry and an actual pastry custard cream(as opposed to whipped cream or pudding), so I frequently bring pastries home to Dallas with me, so I can make the bliss last a little longer. It’s a mandatory visit anytime I’m visiting Lawrence and I don’t expect that to change anytime soon…

Unable to stomach another elementary school quality hotel complimentary breakfast, I found myself at WheatField Bakery Café. Thank god! Great selection of options from pastries to breakfast items. Had no experience with the lunch, but the menu items sound delicious! Friendly and somewhat hipster staff. The décor could use a little update, but I think that’s what adds a bit of charm to this spot. Great location — about a 5 minute drive to KU. I’ll be back!
