OMG~!! I am a single mom, so of course I whipped my car around when I saw that there was a KIDSEATFREE on Sunday special~! Local business will always be my first choice, and the place had an awesome feel with their recycle areas, non-gmo chip options and daily baked bread. I ordered the BLT, and I am not kidding you when I say that the sandwich was, by far, the very best BLT that I have ever eaten in the universe. I got mine toasted and made no variations …oh no, I am craving one just now, as I am typing this… that crunchy bread, sooo much bacon, they really do know how to pleasure a lady with bacon, if you eat bacon… if you don’t, im sorry. But I am willing to bet that they have the best vegetarian sandwich too. . My sons got the kids free sandwiches which came with chips or a cookie, and juice or sm. soda. We don’t eat a lot of sugar, so we got the chips, but those cookies looked amaaaaazing~!!! I will go there every single Sunday and chow down with the fam~!!! Do yourself a favor and go… right now, if they are open and you are hungry, mmmmMMMmmmmm~

Well, well. A blast from the past. I probably hadn’t stopped at Yello Sub in some 20+ years. And guess what? The same guy was still working there. Swear he used to run the location now long vacated where the Oread Hotel behemoth sits. Job security. Cool. Same decks of cards instead of taking a name, pretty much the same menu, and the sandwiches are still… well, they’re OK, not great. But as a rule, who has great sub sandwiches in town? Still looking. The bar is really low in Lawrence for a good sub. The worst: Pickleman’s Gourmet Sandwiches(shame to use the G word with the horrible, tasteless cr** they turn out. Subway: gross, sort of like Jared Fogle, their former pitchman. Sorry, couldn’t resist. Where is he now? Oh, right. Sandbar: decent, not great. Jimmy John’s: … yawn… please. Yello Sub tops the list at just so-so. If you’re looking for something to eat at the desk on the run or a sandwich to stick in your backpack if you’re headed to Clinton Lake to fish or hike, it’ll git ‘er done. But as far as a really great meal. Well, YMMV(your mileage may vary) but I think there are plenty of options in Lawrence for a meal. Unfortunately, they require you go somewhere without the«Sub» word in their menu.

Yello Sub seems like just a regular old sandwich place from the inside and out. You can tell that they’ve tried to upgrade the look of their menu by displaying the calories for each item. I wasn’t expecting much. However, I became a huge fan of this place after I discovered that they put cream cheese on a lot of their sandwiches. Cream cheese on sandwiches reminds me of a fancy tea. Although this place is quite the opposite of a fancy tea, their sandwiches are great. Being so excited by this cream cheese business, I opted to go with the spicy cheese sub. It comes with cream cheese, monterrey jack, mozzarella, onions, jalapenos, lettuce, tomatoes. I had them omit the jalapenos and tomatoes. Delicious!

There is not a lot I can say over and above what I said in the title. I love a good sandwich. I do not eat them often, but when I do I go to my «happy place», reminiscent of childhood, summers in SoCal, and being outdoors. Yello Sub did not take me to my happy place. There are few decent restaurants and fewer good sandwich shops in this city of nearly 100,000, a college town no less, and I had high expectations after reading Yello Sub’s reviews. Four-plus(4+) stars out of 5 on Unilocal,TripAdvisor, and Zomato? Really? What are you people thinking? I stopped eating at Subway years ago, not just because of their false advertising(I have never seen a real sandwich that looks anything like those in the photos, online or in commercials), but because they are not a good value. A «$ 5 Footlong» has maybe 4 ounces of meat at most(although those in their advertising likely have 8 to 16) and so do Yello Sub’s although I could not find a single photo of a sandwich in their store or on their website. I grew up on «submarine»(Italian cold cut) sandwiches in Los Angeles where good delis are a dime a dozen. Those sandwiches were two-fisters. You had to wrap your hands around them, if you could, to keep all of the meat, cheese, and veggies on them from falling out. If you grew up in the Northeast or in Los Angeles, you know what I am talking about. YUM! I ordered the footlong Super Hero($ 8.49+ tax) with salami, pepperoni, spicy capicola(spelled«capocollo», an Italian ham made from the meat of a hog’s head [capo] and shoulder [collo]), provolone cheese, red onions, lettuce, banana peppers, oregano, vinegar, and oil. The first thing I noticed was how light the bag was. When I got home, I found out why. The sandwich was smaller than a Subway Footlong with about the same amount of meat and cheese, but with less veggies. Notedly absent was sliced tomato, an absolute requirement for an Italian«hoagie» or «submarine»(depending on where you grew up). The sandwich was underwhelming to say the least and at nearly twice the price of its«low-value» Subway counterpart, a massive disappointment and poor value. Well, I guess I had more to say than I thought I did. The only reason they got more than one bomb was because the service I received was friendly and professional and because they do not mis-advertise. Went here on a Tuesday night. Service was so slow. Took about 20 minutes to get two sandwiches, and we were the only ones in the place. Just a couple of kids working here not caring about costumer service. Won’t be back.

I have eaten Yello Subs since the late 70’s when they were located in an old house on 23rd Street. Always try to get by when in Lawrence. Without a doubt, the best sub ever made, recommend the Veggie. Rock Chalk!

This is the original Planet Sub since 1979. I think their building and décor has been here since then. The booth tables are the kind with ads on them and it’s amusing to see all the businesses that no longer exist. But the place is clean, the staff is incredibly friendly and the sandwiches aren’t bad. I had the Yello Sub. It was tasty and on toasted bread. Usually I don’t like toasted bread but this was good. I’ve learned that they fresh make their bread daily from scratch, it’s never frozen. Every Planet Sub actually has a mixer.(I worked for Subway in college, the bread comes in frozen, is thawed proofed and baked. I’ve also worked for Target bakery, all that fresh baked bread and bagels were frozen, nothing is made in store from real ingredients. Because of this I am impressed by Planet Sub/Yello Sub.) This was my first visit to Yello Sub because I’ve been to Planet Subs. I came at the suggestion of another Unilocaler when I said Firehouse is the best sandwich in Lawrence. I still think that but this place delivers and is my second favorite. I’m trying to save my 5 stars for best in category.

I’m an out of towner. Came here for work for a week and ended up coming back to this establishment a few times. If I ever came back to Lawrence, I’d stop by again. Good points: — good customer service — cheap!!! — big sub — Love the friendly atmosphere — Lots of sitting space. Advice: One of the times I went I got the crab poboy… I don’t really recommend this one. Didn’t taste fresh. It was decent, but I regretted spending a lunch try for that.

The best in Lawrence. The food is made fresh, the bread is delicious. They have generous portions and many tasty combinations. Yellow Sub is always busy but you never seen to mind the wait because the food is so good. I love the hippie vibe of this restaurant, too. There is an impromptu message board for employees that I love to read. Always a treat to go to Yellow Sub.

Food was great. The reason for the low ranking was the person at the register that seemed put out that we were there. She didn’t acknowledge us at all. Went back to counter to ask for table to be cleaned & the guy who helped was fantastic! We’ll be back, hopefully better service next time.

I have been waiting years to eat here. I have heard incredible things about the sandwiches. After ordering food, i have to wonder how high my friends have been every time they eat here. I’m posting a photo of the food we received. I threw it away. The buffalo chicken looked and tasted as if came out of a can. The Italian was a joke. I have no idea how to even describe it. It was burnt, and it was going no where near my mouth. I felt like I needed to shower after leaving the building. There are dying plants covered in layers of dust all over the building. The ceiling tiles were rotting and falling out of the ceiling. The air vents were full of grease and had dust strings blowing in the breeze. Needless to say I won’t be returning to this establishment for anything, let alone food

Pesto bello with spicy chicken. That’s all you need to know. Fast, friendly service and my favorite subs. Anytime I’m home I eat here at least once. Don’t forget the cookies too!

My absolute favorite sub sandwiches… EVER! Whenever we come back to Lawrence Yellow Sub is an absolute must-stop! They may take a little longer than Subway or Jimmy Johns but the end product is well worth it. The bread is the star– warm, fresh, and a little crispy on the outside… perfection! Most recently I tried their Tuna Salad sub and it was out of this world… but I can pretty much say that about anything I pick from the menu. Tons of great, tasty vegan and vegetarian options including a whole section of Tempeh subs… very impressive! Don’t expect subs so fast you’ll freak… but do expect a whole lot of awesome!
