Rougarou Gumbo

Never been here. Was closed last week when I went by. Their website says they shutdown.

I don’t hand out five star reviews like candy, even if it is Halloween. Rougarou Gumbo gets five stars from me, and here’s why:
1. We came in and the owner was totally personable. He talked with us for like ten minutes — explained his business, his food, his dream to expand and share more yummy recipes with his community. My husband and I really enjoy talking to business owners, especially ones that care. Top of the list… fantastic.
2. The gumbo and red beans and rice were awesome. I’m no gumbo aficionado but it hit the spot for me. They needed just a little salt, but otherwise the bowl of each that we got were teeming with meat, veggies and rice and they tasted fantastic. Specifically, the chicken was truly amazing — moist and flavorful… like butter, seriously. We were surprised at the large portions of both bowls for just around $ 12. Also, he said that he made them less spicy and then had a plethora of spicy sauces available to add — which is great for a person like me who can’t handle the heat, and my husband has choice hot sauces at home that he likes to use anyways so it works out all around.
So all in all, a really great experience. A cool guy, dishing out good food and good service. No frills, just good eats. Five stars from me, it just doesn’t get any better than this! We’ll be baaaaack!

Holy crap. This place is amazing. For a special treat, ask them to mix the jambalaya and gumbo to make gumbalaya and you will instantly be transported to your happy place.

Great service and great food. Gumbo is excellent. Looking forward to the cold winter days and a warm gumbo filled tummy. Try it out. You won’t me disappointed.

We tried all three items on the menu and enjoyed all three. The Jambalaya was the stand out for me! Good flavors with a slight kick. Small local business that deserves support! Check them out and grab a quick bowl.

I HOPE THESE GUYS MAKE IT! They have incredible food, they are fun and outgoing. There is hardly anything on the menu, really, it’s only 3 items, and 2 sizes, but my wife and I loved it. You NEED to check this place out, I’ve been a couple of times every week since I found them.

So happy to read in the local «Community Impact» newspaper that Leander has gotten a new eatery — Rougarou Gumbo! I live in County Glen neighborhood and so does the owner! I’m glad there is a place with awesome, simple, down-​to-​earth food so close to home. Had gumbo for dinner last night and it’s perfect! Mild heat and excellent flavors. Will be there again real soon. John, the owner, is just about the nicest guy you’d ever want to meet! Check it out! Opens at 11:00 and stays open til he sells out!

These guys are great. I bought all 3 options but I gotta say the gumbo was my favorite. Simple menu, smiling faces, and very fast. Go grab a bowl.

A few things done extremely well. Simple and well worth the small amount of money. Delicious food and a mythical beast– I’m in!

I was popping into the market next door yesterday when the owner waved me in to offer a free sample of gumbo. It was pretty darn good gumbo, and that’s hard to do. I sat there had shot the breeze for awhile. He says they’re just open for lunch right now, but he hopes to expand to a food truck in the future. Nice guy, good gumbo… I wish him the best!

If you like gumbo you have to try them out. Not only did we get bowls to eat then but it was so good I got another one to take home.

Dropped by and took multiple bowls to office for lunch. Home run the crew loved it. One wanted to know if they could cater to tailgate party… answer was a definite yes

Just discovered this place through Facebook and got there before they closed. We tried all 3 of their dishes and none of them disappointed. My husband loved the gumbo the most, I preferred the jambalaya and our son was really digging the red beans and rice. Great job, guys! We will be back!
