I have to say, I am definitely an experienced sushi person, and their sushi was really good. They have reasonable prices and interesting yet tasty rolls. Plus the décor is really relaxing and trendy. It is a nice place to sit and relax if you are looking for great sushi. They also have an option for hibachi which means they have a very versatile menu. The service was extremely slow. I think it took us over 2 hours to get in get served and get out. We probably waiting 35 minutes for the check at the end. If you can put a little pep in your waiter/waitresses step then I definitely say do it. Cause their food is delicious.

Despite the wait, slow service, and being crowded with another party around the grill, the sushi we ordered as an appetizer and our dinners were all very good. The vestibule you enter from the sidewalk was very dark and littered with trash on the floor. Not a very welcoming entry/foyer. Inside was clean and contemporary. The chef did a good job with our food at the table. I found the garlic fried rice to be delicious. Would I go back? Not quite sure. But I certainly feel like I got a decent meal for the price.

Had dinner here on a Saturday night. First visit to this restaurant at the Kansas City location. We walked in and waited at least 5 or 10 minutes at the door before the hostess came by to seat us. There was a huge line for the Teppanyaki grill, so we decided to go for sushi instead. The sushi seating area is consist of 4 booths and 3 large«cafeteria style» table in the middle. The décor is minimal at best. This area is not visually pleasant. The booth offers a view of the sushi chiefs and the kitchen area. The sushi selection is okay. The sushi rolls selection list is limited and did not offer a good selection. The food was fresh and averaged priced. Nothing stood out at this restaurant and there are too many other sushi restaurants around for me to go back to Sumo. I did not try the Teppanyaki grill. Service. On a Saturday night, this place is well understaffed. We watched the service staff literally running back and forth between the tables. For the first 15 – 20 minutes after we were seated, no one came by to provide us with water, take our drink orders. Not even a hello or I’ll be right with you. So I decided to go find help. It turns out that our waiter was the same person that’s been taken care of the tables next to us and was simply avoiding us. After I got his attention and have our order taken, the service got progressively better.

Went here last night and am a big fan. We usually go to the Japanese steakhouse in the Marriott on Metcalf but this is a great alternative. Everyone was happy with their food. I’m not a sushi fan but the couple we were with said the sushi experience at Sumo is great too. The fried rice is REALLY garlicky. We were there early so service wasn’t an issue. It had gotten really busy by the time we left at 7:30.
We went to Sumo on Friday night. We purchased a Groupon and knew it would be busy. The only downside was the service. But you can’t blame the servers for this. The food was fresh and prepared wonderfully. We both had steak and lobster with garlic fried rice(must order). Our server was stretched thin but kept it all together. The restaurant is very contemporary and has an urban feel. I will definitely be back and let my friends know about Sumo.

we were one of 3,000 people to buy a groupon for this place. so why was there only one server working the sushi part of the restaurant on a saturday night? the service was ridiculously slow. and when we did see our server, he spent 2 seconds with us and then ran off to the back or to another table. i don’t blame him, though. he seemed like he would have been great — had he been given less responsibility(5 tables instead of 20…) the sushi was okay. the salmon was good quality. we tried one of their more interesting rolls(salmons, cream cheese and banana), it was good. the atmosphere is odd. it’s like a mix between the kemper museum(stark, open space with a concrete floor and highs ceilings) and a night club.

SUMO gets a definite 3.5 stars in my book and many mixed feelings: SUMO is huge! Absolutely gigantic! My mom and I arrived at 5PM and we’re the only ones there. We were allowed to chose any seat in the place, and chose a booth in the sushi section. Even though we were the only diners, our service was slowwwww. Very nice service once they arrived, but we waited forever on the drinks, and then on the food, and then on the check. We had 2 waiter(ess). A Japanese lady who came across as possibly the owner and a younger boy named Scott who seemed to be new. We asked them to suggest their most wild and crazy dish on the menu. I love eel and octopus and was hoping for something fun as such. Immediately, Scott said«…Our most outrageous dish is the tuna! Try the tuna!» Really Scott… tuna!?! Tuna has got to be the tamest fish in the sea. Ordered: Uni: Sea Urchin… only to be informed that they were out. the Nigiri-Five(5 chef choices) at $ 10. It came with Eel, Octopus, Salmon, Yellow Tail, and Shrimp. the Spider Roll upon suggestion of the Japanese lady. $ 9.75. Soft shell crab Tempura, Massage, and Avocado. Volcano Roll $ 6. Boiled Octopus, Cucumber, Jalapenos with Masago and spicy mayo sauce. I was hesitant about the Volcano Roll because I don’t like spicy food but decided to risk the burn and try the dish. I was very let down. I am a wimp about hot food, and the Volcano Roll barely managed a tingle on my tongue. I enjoyed the Nigiri-Five and Spider Roll but left SUMO still hungry. The lighting is very, very dark. I understand the importance of romantic lighting, but I felt like I was eating my fish in pitch dark. As you leave, there are chocolate mints to enjoy. A very unexpected, nice change from the usual peppermints that restaurants provide. Overall, mixed feelings. I’m willing to go back once more to give them another try … because I have a $ 10 off coupon.

Dined at a grill table, service and food very good. Nearby option is always too crowded, smokey(grill), and loud. I’ll come back here! Sushi is good I’ve been told. We need this to stay in the area!

I was shocked that we were the only people in here at 5pm on a Saturday. But that meant that we got some fantastic service and a lot of attention paid to our food. We sampled all of the standard fare, and the rolls, tempura, salad, and drinks were good. My only qualms were that we had to ask for pickled ginger, and that the sushi salad included an equal portion of cucumbers to seaweed. Plus, no happy hour at all… Strange. But the décor was interesting, and everyone was really nice. Next time I’m in town though, I’ll probably try something different.

This is my favorite hot spot for a night out with friends or the hubby. Whats better than a night full of sake, noodles and sushi? My top 5 reasons for loving Sumo: #1) the staff likes to dress up in a sumo wrestler suit and say hi to their fellow consumers, cool. #2) great menu. unique rolls-crazy combos, and the hibachi style food is great. mmmmmm… #3) very cool, trendy atmosphere, unique seating and bar area #4) live Dj makes the place hoppin’ #5) perfect for date night or group fun

We loved the food, cool atmosphere and the friendly staff at Sumo! It was our first time trying out Sumo and we enjoyed all the rolls that we ordered. We’ll definitely be back to try out the hibachi dinners!

We had a great time at this restaurant. I am not into the fusion rolls as much as just real sushi. We had the steakhouse part as well that night and we thought they did a great job. I was not thrilled with the side sauces but they were still good. Everything was fresh and we really liked the Atmosphere. It is a large restaurant. That is helpful on crowed nights. We will return.

Great new addition to the Sushi scene in Kansas City! They feature some very unique rolls with some very fresh ingredients(not just the fish). Alot of the rolls have fruits as well as fish, like the Caribbean which is tuna, cream cheese and banana. I know it sounds weird but is actually very good, and a nice refreshing twist on sushi. The waitress could have been a little more accommodating, but it was there first week open so I’m hoping that gets better. They are also a Japanese steak house but haven’t tried that out yet.
