I was shocked when I was told this was a barn where cattle used to be. It is a quaint little place with unexpectedly great fish. Had the walleye all you can eat and it was GREAT! The breading was just right and the fish was cooked perfect. The only reason that I have 4 stars instead of 5 is the wait from the waitstaff and it took 45 minutes to get our food. Also we wanted a table right away, but was forced to sit at bar till the food was ready.

This restaurant/bar is in my hometown with a population of 500. I have had many, many a fish fry here and it still rates as one of the best. They have perch and walleye, but I always go for the perch. You can get a plate or sometimes all u can eat — which I would never order because I can’t finish a plate — or you can also order family style. The batter is light and the fish has never ever been greasy. The star for me is the homemade potato salad which I can get a craving for as I write this. You can get fries if you want, but I don’t want them when I can get this potato salad. The plate also comes with tartar sauce, coleslaw and buttered rye and white bread. Other than the famous Friday Night Fish Fry, the Barn Tavern also does a great Fried or Broasted? Chicken. We order it every year for take out for our family reunion. Again, never greasy. Always crispy and juicy. Good stuff. Now, this place is called the Barn Tavern because it is actually an old barn… a really old barn… that has been converted into a tavern. The bar is in the lower level and isn’t very big, but has the essentials… beer and liquor, and a bar to sit at to drink it. And good cheap beer prices. Gotta love the restroom choices of Bulls or Heifers. It’s fun to watch the«city folk» try to figure out which one they are. The upper level which would have been the old hay mow has been converted into a «hall» with a bar and plenty of tables for busy night overflow as well as parties. It’s also big enough for a band. Don’t go in expecting much. You’ll park in a gravel or muddy parking lot and walk into an old barn that doesn’t have much fancy décor, but it is something to see. And definitely a great place to eat. You also need to have patience. They are not the quickest at getting your food out, especially when they are busy… so be prepared to sit at the bar for a bit and enjoy a couple of Old Milwaukee’s. «Come Sit, Relax and Drink where the Cows used to Stink»

The most basic fish fry, restaurant and bar you’ll ever step foot in. But that’s not a complaint. It’s basic, but it’s affordable and it’s friendly, with cold beer. As a city guy, add in the lovely sunset and rural views, and I enjoy this place greatly. Beyond that, there isn’t much to say… I like it a bunch!

First off, this is not fish fry for anyone who demands linens and chine. This is country cooking — amazing but not fancy. The sides are all good. Nothing to complain about, nothing to exclaim about. Nothing disappointing with the coleslaw, potato salad, buttered breads(they do pre-butter the slices of white and pumpernickel for you, which is handy while you are gorging yourself). They even have chicken wings to go with — nothing fancy and they have no sauce, but they are nice. No, they pearl in this rough oyster is the fish. Growing up in the Northwoods of Vilas and Onieda counties, I know good fish fry. The fish here was amazing. I will drive out of my way to find this place again. Add on that a bartender who is as friendly as can be imagined, cold beer on tap at good prices — well, let’s just say I will be there again and again.
