All four of us had Kale salads — 2 with chicken and 2 with salmon. The salmon was excellent! Kale salad was very good(despite being a little too heavy on the dressing for my taste). Will definitely return!

As a local, I think it’s extremely important to promote area businesses. I was really looking forward to trying out The Gate House for the first time this past weekend. Upon arrival, we were seated outside in the heated porch area. A few minutes later, a server appeared to take our drink orders and bring us menus and place settings for one person. There were two of us. There were 2 other tables outside, and 2 others inside. Five minutes later, drinks were delivered and the server disappeared again. Finally, she came back to get our order. Time passed, about 20 – 25 min according to my watch. My club soda was empty, I heard other patrons slurping their drinks as most people outside had empty ones. I watched one table get up, remove a dollar from the tip they were originally planning to leave the server, and were just shaking their heads as they left. Our server reappeared and gave us our appetizer and our entrees. However, they were the wrong entrees and our server got our order incorrect three different times. Another 20 – 25 min passed… at least. No drink refills, no nothing… Finally, we questioned where our salads were and she said she didn’t think we wanted them anymore. We kindly asked to make them to go, as we had already been waiting for an hour for our food. Another 10 min or so passed, keep in mind, the last table had left and it was us outside and two tables inside. We had to finally go inside and the server said one more min for the salads, by that point it was pretty much decided that it wasn’t worth it to wait. The server said that it was really busy and the kitchen was short staffed. All in all, it can be described as service was deplorable. Never ever in my 30+ years of dining experience have I ever been treated so despicably. I tried contacting the restaurant via Facebook personal message to send them a picture of my pathetic«to-go» salad and no response, just a notification that they had in fact viewed my message. I am horribly disappointed and will never be returning or recommending this restaurant to anyone.

We dined here for the first time on Thanksgiving. The service was excellent, attentive and accommodating. The turkey dinner was superb. The portions were quite large, but it was nice to have for the next day. The cocktails were terrific. We can’t wait to return again! A most pleasant experience from beginning to end.

Lunch. We(our daughter and I) were able to get a table(wasn’t crowded) and the waitress came and asked us if we wanted ‘tap water’. After checking out the menu, I ordered a chicken sandwich. It had a marinated chicken breast(real, tasty, cooked perfectly), sliced avocado, bacon(thick sliced), Swiss cheese(melted), on a fine roll. I got a side of fried Brussels sprouts(excellent). Our daughter ordered their chicken salad. She reported it was delicious and a nice sized portion. She also got unsweetened ice tea. Portions were generous. Our waitress stopped by frequently to inquire if we needed anything. We responded that everything was great If I had to nitpick, the water glass was too small and the water was tepid. Would I return to try more? Certainly. Would I go for dinner. Yep

Great food! Started off with a cheese plate(we ordered 3 different cheese for 5 people. More than enough). The truffle fries were a huge hit at the table — the bowl was huge, shared between 5(despite previous reviews that they weren’t great — they were perfectly crisp and flavorful). Ordered the bistro chicken(prepared gluten free — they were really accommodating about that) and it was the perfect portion and really delicious. We also got 2 bottles of wine for the table. Will be going back for sure. Waitress was really helpful and nice!

Good food and good service. Our 6 year-old also loved the grilled cheese on the kids’ menu.

My wife and I are locals and thought we would give this newer restaraunt a try. It was a pleasant surprise to see that we couod make resrevations on Unilocal. We were promptly greeted and seated at a table of our choice. The service was good and the wine list was mediocre bt 2e did find a nice bottle that went well for dinner. The smoked salmon appetizer was excellent as were the scallops entrée. The halibut entrée was a good portion and was good. Not yet a 5 star but woth a return visit.

This place had been highly recommended and I thought it was OK. I took a French friend for their birthday, as it was explained to be a French bistro. Had the tuna sushimi, it was fair. But the wine choices were OK, truffle french fries were excellent and the service was good. I was just expecting a little more from the food maybe it was just the day I went. It was raining really hard outside and we were on the outside terrace which was fine.

Your review helps others learn about great local businesses. The food was excellent. The beet salad I had was superb. My wife had a very interesting appetizer that one rarely finds on menus: bone marrow on toasted bread. The rack of lamb I had was extremely tender. I liked the somewhat tart sauce that came with the lamb. There were seven adults and everyone enjoyed their meal. I would definitely go back. We had a very pleasant evening celebrating my wife’s birthday. Please don’t review this business if you received a freebie for writing this review, or if you’re connected in any way to the owner or employees. T

Food is great, especially the appetizers, salads, and burger. Extensive wine and cocktail menu. Reservations are not required on weekdays but recommended for weekends.

My wife and I dined at The Gate House on the occasion of our fifth anniversary. The chef served us personally, as they were short-staffed, but the service was excellent. Both the soup(cream of corn and crab), and my entrée(rack of lamb) were fantastic, with the lamb being some of the most tender that I have had. My wife’s duck was also excellent, even though it was a custom order, and had to be made without a key ingredient. Finally, the price was also very reasonable. Highly recommended!

A very balanced and charming experience. From our truly professional and thoughtful wait staff to a menu difficult to beat anywhere in Lewes, and Rehoboth for that matter. Top notch ambience. Bravo. G. Raffel Lewes

Found this place by accident. What a gem. Delicious cocktails. Loved the fried Brussels sprouts as an appetizer. Fresh beet salad with filet was excellent. A must try place for any visitor in historic Lewes.

Great food. Wait staff knows wine. The scallops are well paired with the ranga ranga.

What a very disappointing experience First and foremost I want to commend the waitstaff. Our waiter was patient, thoughtful, and highly professional As for my meal, however, it was dreadful. I chose lamb. I love lamb. I adore lamb. I eat lamb regularly. This rack of lamb(4 small medallions at $ 21, oh please) was served with what one can only determine to be fancy bbq sauce. Sacre bleu! Say it isn’t so! I have never taken a complaint about my meal to the staff — I generally chalk up a less than stellar meal to poor choice, busy kitchen, etc. I did, however, speak up about this one. The waiter did offer to give me a different entrée, which I declined — you see, I did eat the lamb(all of it) as I am descended from Depression Era parents and don’t like waste. And because I did, the kitchen staff declined to do anything — least of all to show themselves and speak to me directly– hence, my low rating Come on, folks, step it up a notch if you’re going to go high brow on us. The accompanying Brussels sprouts were too salty. The one thing done well, again in large part due to the effort of the waiter, was to bring my daughter a sample of the fries so she could decide if she’d eat them with the truffle salt. I was so impressed by that.

Had a fantastic lunch of a tomato, avocado and mozzarella sandwich, with some sort of balsamic dressing on a tasty brioche style roll. Came with a huge order of french fries that had a twist, think I was detecting truffle oil and a coarse salt. I ate half because it was a big portion, the rest is in the fridge Also, my husband and I had dinner here over the weekend, he digs the Gate House Burger, I went for the duck. Having not eaten much duck I was not sure how to order it, so I went chefs choice and it came out beautifully in a filet sliced and crusted with the most delicious topping. Melted in my mouth. A crispy kale spicy was the vegetable. Of course, the bread and butter worth the calories. I made a mistake taking this dish home half eaten. I should have forced myself to finish the duck. It was not as spectacular the next day. Please note: The Gate House is temporarily closing for repairs sometime in January. Many restaurants do that in low season. And since this place serves fresh food they are going to be out of some things during this time. If your first choice is not available, there are plenty of other worthy alternatives.

Sweet little French bistro. Excellent food! We visited with our parents and all had the scallops which were perfectly cooked carmelized on the outside, tender on the inside. The bread here is amazing, as French as it gets with a wonderfully crisp crust. A small but well thought out wine menu. I recommend the Bordeaux.

Overall, a mediocre experience at best. I had the classic french dish, chicken salad. Almost as gallic as another meal at our table, seared tuna with wasabi. It was ok but really not memorable. The server was clearly overwhelmed by her four tables. Two of our three orders were wrong. One of them took three tries to get right. Calling it a french bistro is false advertising. There is nothing french about it at all. Try the Italian place on the same street. A hundred times better.
