Tokyo Sushi

Okay please understand that I ate here with children 1^st, but that should be no excuse for the waitstaff to not be very friendly or helpful. There was also only one other family there at the time. As for the sushi, it was not bad. The cooked food however, seemed more Chinese than Japanese, and it was just average Chinese at that. The kids did love the marble soda that you must insert and push a plastic piece into the top of the bottle that releases a marble from the top of the bottle allowing you to drink the soda, but this was really the highlight of the evening. Without the soda this was unfortunately a two star review.

I liked the Korean options much better than the sushi. The sushi is over priced and not very good. I did have a Korean soup meal that I really liked though and I would come back for that. Beware if you have a
coupon — they are hesitant to accept it.

I can’t believe my luck! If I am feeling down this atmosphere and food SO Pep’s me back up! I can have my pick from comforting Japanese cuisine or invigorating Korean dishes. There is an Appetizer you simply MUST TRY! The Salmon Skin Appetizer! Crispy oily deliciousness!!! Wow! Can’t go wrong baby can’t go wrong!!!

Not a bad place to get sushi or some Korean dishes. I’m not a fan of sushi but Korean food isn’t so bad. I really think they need a bigger place. Just so small. They also need more on the menu for Korean foods.

The people running this restaurant are the most rude I have ever experienced. We arrived an hour before our movie expecting to eat and use our
coupon. First we were told they no longer accept the $ 25 certificate only the $ 50 or $ 100 certificate. We said we still wanted our order. Everyone else in restaurant that arrived and ordered after our sushi order was placed were served. We were told it would be at least another 30 minutes before we would get our 3 sushi rolls and the 4 nigiri. At that point we got up and left. We will never set foot in that restaurant again.

This was my husband’s favorite sushi place that we’ve tried so far in the Midwest.
It’s really a hole in the wall and run by a Korean family.
My husband ordered the Jeannie roll and the North Carolina roll. He loves cooked rolls. One of these was made with eggs like a tamago roll, and that’s what got him hooked.
Their miso soup was tasty. One of the best I’ve had. I ordered their tofu soup. It was spicy and did the trick for me. Satisfied my Korean food craving. The side dishes weren’t the best, but the diakon was delicious.
The sauces on the sushi were yummy. I think that was the thing that made them stand out the most.

Try the Salmon Skin appetizer. A thin layer of Salmon meat with a rich layer of fat and crispy skin that will drive your taste buds like a nitro fueled motor!!!

DO NOT GO TO TOKYO SUSHI… EVER! I waited 6 weeks to write this review because I wanted to put some time between our last meal ever at Tokyo Sushi and this review. We dined on a Saturday night and they had only 1 other table so the service should have been good. The waiter/​manager was horrible. More concerned with watching TV than us. We ordered more food than the 4 of us should have been able to eat. After a long wait, the disappointment arrived to our table in the form of the smallest rolls, and the most thinly sliced nigiri I have ever seen. My son unrolled the yellow tail roll to show the waiter that it had virtually no fish in it. We were told that the end pieces don’t have fish! We had to threaten to leave before he agreed to take $ 8.95 roll off our bill of $ 140. We finished the tasteless dinner in short time because there was so little food. When I gave him our coupon, he added a 25% tip for himself and added the price of the yellow tail roll without listing it on the receipt. We paid for our sushi but withheld the tip and the cost of the NO yellowtail roll. This was the third time we tried Tokyo Sushi. It was never good, bit convenient to our house. I’d rather travel to Tokyo to eat before I ever go back to Tokyo Sushi

All the reviews below pretty much sum it up. Tokyo Sushi is a good option for sushi in Lexington. It may not be the best you’ve ever had – don’t compare it to some awesome sushi place you visited in San Francisco – but it won’t be a disappointment.
The night we visited was pretty slow. It wasn’t packed, but we still waited for about 30 minutes for the sushi. Still, it’s a very informal spot and it didn’t feel like a painful wait. We were relaxed, and it’s a fine place to bring kids. Not at all fancy. (That’s a good thing, in my book!)
Prices are fairly standard for a sushi place. Expect to pay a bit. But the prices also aren’t any higher than an average sushi joint.

We went on a Brave Tart recommendation. Small sushi restaurant (10 top?) in strip mall off of south Richmond Rd. We had about five rolls — Patrick, Tokyo, another I forget… starts with a J… a woman’s name, fatty tuna, and yellow tail — all were delicious. Tokyo the best. My daughter ate pretty much all of her shrimp tempura. A good sign. My son sat in his high chair and played drums on the table with two straws. About normal for him. Two minor complaints: It was slow. The chef was the only one preparing sushi, and even though it wasn’t crowded, it took some time. I would like the waiter to remind us which roll is which. Even for sushi people like ourselves, we sometimes get them mixed up. Otherwise, we’re going back. We liked it.

We moved to Lexington a few months ago, and since then have been searching for a great sushi restaurant. We tried Tokyo Sushi, and were extremely disappointed. It may have been the fact that we went there around 9 PM, but the food was nearly unacceptable. The rolls were falling apart, and the fish did not taste fresh. There were miniscule amounts in each roll as well. Will not be trying again.

While visiting Lexington the other day, I was lucky enough to get to visit Tokyo Sushi for lunch. While a small restaurant, tucked away in a shopping center, I was greeted at the door. The young server was very talkative and I found this very pleasing. The sushi chef behind the bar had the well-​worn look of an expert and I found this to be so. He presented his delicacies in the typical manner, but with just a little flair. I had a bowl of Miso soup that was exceptional and very flavorful. Next was a Philly roll that I found to be the best that I’ve ever had. It was served warm w/​smoked salmon, cream cheese, and thinly sliced avocado. The difference in this one and the others that I’ve had was simply this… just the right amount of cream cheese. Not too much, which is the downfall of many other Philly rolls. The next roll I had was a speciality roll… the «Man O’War». This roll (which I’ve included a photo of) was a good, solid roll and very tasty. I was shocked that no «special sauce» was added to this speciality roll, but none the less it was tasty.
The bill arrived and for soup and 2 rolls totaled around $ 25.00. A little expensive.
All in all my experience at this restaurant was good. They also specialize in Korean food, which is another fave of mine. I look forward to popping in here again for a good lunch experience.

In town visiting from Chicago. Have eaten my fair share of sushi and some individuals mentioned this as a good option. Not impressed. They get two stars because they did have good bul-​go-​gi but the sushi was not top notch. We had 4 rolls– the shrimp tempura being the best of the bad. stir clear of the fireman and dragon rolls. For the price we were expecting amazing sushi, but for 1 entrée, 4 rolls, an appetizer and 2 beers it was around 75 before tax and tip, with the total coming to close to $ 90. I have no problem paying that for dinner for 2 but for the quality we got taken to cleaners. The sushi was not good, bad almost. Will not be recommending this place to anyone unless the want strictly the Korean food and even then I’ve had much better. Just a heads up KY there is much better sushi out there so don’t settle.

Inspite of being called Tokyo Sushi, this is a Korean owned sushi joint/​korean food/​karaōke spot. Strangely, some of my Japanese friends turned me on to this place (though perhaps more through their love of Korean food than for the sushi here…).
The sushi is solid; nothing mind blowing, but nothing to scoff at. As it’s sushi by way of Korea, there’s a certain Korean-​esque nuance to it that I can’t put my finger on but is none the less tasty. As the previous reviewer said, it’s very laid back and a nice place to be when you’re not looking for pretension.
I’ve noticed it can be a bit uneven at times. The second to last time I went, I had some of the best tekkamaki ever, but the last time it was made uramaki style (inside out) and was very meh; perhaps a little too cold.
The biggest bonus is the Korean food/​sushi combo. I lived in Japan for a while and can not get enough Japanese food. Meanwhile, my husband tolerates sushi at best, and has really been a good sport about trying all sorts of sushi (in Japan and here in the states), but is just really not a fan. So when my cravings get overwhelming, we come here. He can have some chap chae or jaemon, and I can toro to my hearts content.
No question, there are better sushi places in town (Sugano’s comes to mind), but I really value BOTH parties in a date having a good time, so we come here and can both order what we want and dine happily. I don’t mean to damn with faint praise, but if you’re just looking for some good sushi, you can get it here. If you’re looking for, «and suddenly, i found myself sitting on a barstool in the tsukiji fish market, eating the freshest unagi that’s ever touched my mouth…» you won’t find it here. But you can certainly have an enjoyable meal.
Also, as the evening wears on, the karaōke comes out. 99% of the songs are in Korean or Japanese, so the English speaking crowd may be stuck with just a few of the classics, but I for one enjoyed tipsily belting out Utada Hikaru tunes… what can I say.

This is currently my favorite place to get my sushi fix in Lexington, it’s never too busy, the food is great, and it’s not outrageously expensive. This is strictly a sushi dive. There’s no open grill at your table and there’s no acrobatic food anywhere to be seen… or heard. This is just a laid-​back place that doesn’t try too hard where you can relax and enjoy your food. Like all great asian restaurants, it was clearly decorated by someone who was new to this country and still a little bit disoriented. Besides, you’ll rarely go wrong with any of the thousands of independent restaurants named «Tokyo Sushi»

Tokyo Sushi is the best sushi restaurant in Lexington. It is definitely NOT the best example of a sushi restaurant ever, but compared to the other brine-​swill offered in this landlocked, bullshit town, it is the best thing to be found. The food is overpriced for what it is, but it has quality and freshness that are unmatched for the area, and some neat, unique rolls — try the Lucky roll. It also offers Korean barbeque, the goodness of which I have no idea because I never ordered it. I saw actual Koreans eating it one night, so I guess that’s a good sign. The wait staff typically consists of one waiter and one chef behind the counter, which fits the calm coziness of this small place. We went there a few times and they started recognizing us, which is important to me if I’m going to frequently visit a small place like that — is it too hard to ask to remember your patrons? Overall, a good location in Lexington.
