Sorry to say not impressed. We were excited to try the place as we had heard good things. We tried the 4 reds, the first one had an odd metallic taste. The 2nd wasn’t much better. We got to the 3rd and thought it was much better and the 4th was decent also. A bit surprised to the price of $ 10 for only 4 choices. So we asked if the glasses come with the tasting. We were told yes, but that today they weren’t because they needed them for other customers. Their stock was low. So any offer to discount the wine tasting since we paid for a glass, but didn’t get? …none.

I was very surprised to find such an excellent winery experience so close to home. The staff was very accommodating and Amanda in particular provided outstanding service. The live music was perfect and the duet was another good surprise.

Nice little winery with some decent wines and occasional events. Still kind of growing but if it becomes anything like it’s sister winery, Georgetown Winery we are all in for a treat! Friendly staff and atmosphere. The grounds are nice with tables to enjoy the outdoors or inside in the AC.

After passing this winery on Highway 183 several times, my husband finally surprised me with a spur of the moment decision to stop. I was very curious about a central Texas winery that offers a Malbec. I was not disappointed. It is a dark inky glass with a nice strong spice. The finish is long and jammy. It is not the best Malbec I’ve ever had, but for a local Texas winery, I am impressed. The Malbec is what convinced me to purchase the membership. The Cabernet did not disappoint either. The grounds are lovely and the underground tasting room is nice when it’s not shoulder to shoulder crowded. Most wonderfully, this winery is pet friendly and welcomed my Chihuahua with open arms and a savory dog treat. She liked it there as much as I did. They also offer a vast array of vinegar and olive oils. I have not tried them yet, but it is on my 2016 to do list. When I am craving a weekend in Fredricksburg, but can’t get away, the Thirsty Mule Winery is the perfect way to spend a Saturday.

Up along the countryside stretch of U.S. Highway 183, you’ll find one of the newer wineries in Texas. Located just north of Liberty Hill, this location has a very unique side to it — the fact that the tasting room is underground. What a great idea! Especially under the infamous Texas summer heat. The Marek’s from Georgetown Winery have been working on this site for the last several years. Built on an old 40 year old home site, they’ve constructed their winery from an old underground house. Seems the former owner decided they wanted to carve their home out of the limestone hillside and seek some cooler shade and temperatures over the years, so fast forward a number of years and the derelict underground former residence is slowly remodeled into one of the newest and more unique tasting rooms in the state. The tasting room and bar is quite spacious and a COOL area of about 3400 square feet. Take a look at the back where they have windows with views to the cave area as they left a few spots for you to view the sides of the cave the place is built into. Their eight acre estate is not only the location of the new tasting room, but also houses their winemaking facility which doubles as the facility for Georgetown Winery too. However at this site, the wine selection is different. They’ve been open since May and have a well rounded list of wines from white, to red, to sweet. There are eleven wines currently available for tasting of which you can select four in a regular tasting. A number of them have already won awards from the Lone Star competition. For the whites, they have a Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay. Good chilled whites to have in the afternoon. For the reds, you’ll get to try a nice range from Tempranillo, Malbec, Merlot, or Cabernet Sauvignon. For the sweets, you might get wrapped up with the Sweet Blush which is rich with strawberry flavors. It’s better than iced summer time lemonade! There is also a sweet red to enjoy, and a white with hints of pear as well as a Muscat. Lastly, there is a pretty darn good Sweet mule port. No need to fortify this port as it’s quite tasty on its own. Dan can be found running things around the site engaging with customers. With picnic tables out front and lots of great big shade trees, you get the feeling of a nice relaxed country setting to help you unwind and escape into your wine sipping mood. Although they get a number of their grapes from their Rockdale vineyard site, there are plans to put a vineyard on the front of the property. Check this place out on your next 183 wine trekking adventure.

I’ve been wanting to stop here for a while and I’m so glad I finally made it. First of all they are dog friendly and that is such a nice thing to find in the area. Second the wine is very good and the staff is very friendly. Tastings are generous and reasonably priced as are the wines by the glass. There was live music while we were there as well as other friendly patrons. I will definitely be back for the wine and the atmosphere!

We stopped at the Thirsty Mule on our way to a Texas Stars game. A few other wineries in the area recommended we stop by so we did. The tastings were 4 for $ 10 which is reasonable for the area. Their pours are excellent at 2oz a sample. The problem is the wines were not good. Malbec and Tempranillo are my favorite wines and theirs were not recognizable as those types. This year I’ve been buying a few Chardonnay wines from local wineries and I would not buy Thirsty Mule’s Chardonnay. I tasted some of my girl friends sweeter wines which were not good either. Most of their wines are $ 22 each. A cheap price for cheap tasting wines. Stop at Pilot Knob near Florence. You’ll get better wines.

The location is beautiful and unique. Price is $ 10 for tasting which is pretty reasonable and they have a varied menu for how new they are. The only thing that keeps them from being 5 star is I have yet to have a pourer(been twice) that knows anything about wine. I know what I like but I also like to hear where the grapes are from, how it was aged and what people are tasting in the wine(tobacco, cherries, etc). We did drop in on a Saturday and enjoy the live music and they have cute little gifts, just need their staff to learn the wine.

The service was really poor. When I asked my first question, which was«Whats in the Pinot Blanc» and got the curt answer«Grapes», I was a bit turned off. When I asked my second(& final question), «I mean, what kind of grapes?», and got«Pinot Grapes». I was REALLY turned off. I was trying to understand what kind of wine I was drinking. I have had Pinot Grigio and I’ve had Sauvigon Blanc, but Pinot Blanc was new to me. Plus, it wasn’t good so I wanted to make sure I didn’t order it again. I had the wine tasting, which included a taste of 4, and had to pour out two of the tastes, I just couldn’t drink them. And I like most wine. If you have been to wine tasting before, and you see the wine server use wine to rinse your glass, they’re doing it right. If you see someone use water, they’re doing it wrong. There is a science behind why using wine versus water is the right way and it has everything to do with the way the wine will taste and smell. Water, or even a wet glass, completely changes the smell and taste profiles of the wine. The facility is very nice. I can tell they’ve put a TON of thought into decorating, they have fun item for sales and the music was good, which is the only reason I’m giving 2 stars. If I was rating just the wine & service, I’d certainly give just 1 star. So, go for the facility, don’t stay for the wine or service.

thirsty mule is about 2 months old and it is a remodeled house as the owner told us. it is neat. it’s buried under 4 feet of dirt and concrete. the inside is pretty neat, they have a place to hang out with tables and chairs. and a lot of cool antique winery stuff. there was a patio outside as well. but was a little too warm to be sitting out in that heat. the tasting consists of 4 samples for 10 bucks, but don’t fret. they are 2oz tastes not yer normal 1oz. the only issue I had was the bottle of dessert wine we bought to bring back to Illinois, well apparently the cork is defective or something. cause when we got back to our apt here. it was leaking out of it?! noticeably in the bag. and it ruined the cute wine label :(that was half the reason we got It! oh well. I still give it the high rating!

Cute little place! Only a couple months old… We just happened to find it passing by. Cute decorations inside & nice outdoor area with music. All the wines we tried were good. $ 10 for 42oz samples. & ya get to keep the glass.(Which is very cute!) Got a bottle of their dessert wine to take home. Glad we stopped! :)

Great place. Great wine. Great people. This is a slice a Fredericksburg closer to home. Beautiful setting under nice oak trees, with a large tasting bar built into the side of a hill. You get 4 tastings for 10.00 and you get to keep the glass. You get to pick any 4 tastings on their menu.

This winery opened up last week in Liberty HIll. A mere 18 minute drive north of Cedar Park, Thirsty Mule is bringing the wine country closer to home. The owners are the same owners as the popular Georgetown winery. The building once was a home that was built in 1979 and before Thirsty Mule Owners got a hold of it, it sat empty for many years. The tasting room which is backed up to a cave is on a nice plot of land which backs up to a creek. The completely remodeled the building and now has a long bar, several tables for enjoying a glass of wine and a banquet room that can accommodate about 50. Outside they have lots of picnic tables shaded by tall trees. The wine portfolio is well rounded. Currently they have 2 whites, 4 reds, 4 sweets and a dessert wine. We ordered a flight each which runs $ 10 for 4 tastings(2 ounce pours). You can also purchase a glass of wine for $ 7 or buy bottle to enjoy on the property or to take home. Between the two of us we tried the Pinot Blanc, Cabernet, Merlot, Malbec, sweet blush(strawberry) and the dessert wine which is called sweet mule. My four favorites were the Pinot Blanc, Malbec, and Cabernet. The Pinot Blanc was fruit forward at first but has a dry finish. The Malbec had some spice to it, we liked this one enough that we bought a bottle. The Cabernet had hints of bell pepper both on the nose and by taste. The blush makes for a good patio sipper but a tad sweet for my liking. They plan to have live music soon and the patio is dog friendly. We had a great time meeting Scott during our tasting and enjoyed the tasting. If you stop in make sure to peak out the windows to get a glimpse of the limestone«cave» and the etched in date from the original owner.
