Sheldon Museum of Art

This is a small museum with some rather famous pieces in its collection, probably most notably Hopper’s Room in New York. In addition there are many local artist pieces, and a very nice sculpture garden. The building itself is quite interesting with the gold disc ceilings an white marble structure. Since it’s completely free, parking is easy, and it won’t take much more than an hour or so to see all the galleries… I don’t know any good reasons not to visit if you appreciate art and have the time.
While I was there they had exhibitions on art in science fiction, Willa Cather, and New Mexico.
Definitely recommended.

Pretty amazing to see Hopper’s «Room in New York» up close — truly a treasure for the museum and the state as a whole. It’s the sort of painting you can get lost in. The scene of a couple in their everyday lives in a NYC hi-​rise apartment, its colors, shadows and lines are so revealing that you kind of feel like a voyeur peering into the lives of others, drawing you in and leaving you wanting to spend the afternoon swimming in the lime greens and grays.
That painting alone is reason enough to love the Sheldon, the free contemporary art museum nestled on the west side of campus in downtown Lincoln. Even though Sheldon is smallish, I try to make a point to visit every time I’m in Lincoln. Hey, admission is always free and with works by Hopper, Warhol, O’Keefe, Pollock and Cassett on view — plus any number of amazing new exhibits — it’s always a much appreciated cerebral retreat from the stresses of the world at large. Plus the building, built in 1963, is a work of art in its own right.

Eh, this place is dece. You know, I kinda hate to give this place a 2 star rating, but the above description sums up my reaction quite nicely: «Meh. I’ve experienced better.»
It’s not a bad museum, it’s just relatively small and there’s nothing too outstanding about the building itself or the artwork it contains. But even so, there are some cool paintings and sculptures that come through here.

Free art galleries are always a treat, but from what I’ve heard the Sheldon is kind of hit or miss. Yesterday I’d say was a miss… just not quite my style of art was on display. While there were some items that were amusing to the point of LOL-​ing, that’s not really what I’m looking for in a gallery. Personally, the building was much more impressive (make sure to check out the elevator interiors).

I have enjoyed many art lectures and installations here over the years. Their permanent collect is very nice. I always looedk forward to their visiting exhibits and openings.
If you have never been to «Jazz in June» on the lawn, it is a Lincoln must to-​do.

If you like American art, the Sheldon has an outstanding collection, especially in early 20^th century artists. It includes some real knockouts, such as one of Edward Hopper’s finest painings, «Room in New York.» Another favorite of mine is Ben Shahn’s «Trouble», a haunting semi-​abstract painting which depicts two men fighting outside of a carnival. If you’re hoping to find Monet and other European masters, you’ll have better luck at the Joslyn in Omaha. But the Sheldon proves that America has a rich history of our own when it comes to painting and sculpture. Speaking of which, don’t miss the University’s fine collection of outdoor sculpture while you’re on campus!
