There is a truth, rarely acknowledged, that most women swoon at the sight of a man in a kilt. Oh, they’ll tell you that there’s nothing like a great smile or nice eyes; that they never look any further than at a good set of biceps, but they would be lying. When a fine looking man is in a kilt, it highlights features that we rarely see in regular society: well-turned calfs. Heck, a kilt even does thing does great things to the male derrière that a pair of jeans can never achieve! With that in mind, you can be sure that my sister and I were heading to the 163rd St. Andrews Society Annual Highland Games. We’ve been going to this event for years. It used to be held at Fort Wayne in Detroit, which was a magnificent site for the Games, historical and with plenty of room to roam. Thirteen years ago, the event moved to Greenmead in Livonia. While the site is picturesque, it is a little cramped. Parking is limited and a little difficult. On Saturday, there is a shuttle from Schoolcraft College to get to Greenmead. There are two parts to the event. Friday evening there is the ceilidh, pronounced«kay-lee», which is a party of music and merriment, with lots of fun, food and, of course, whiskey. Tickets to the ceilidh are sold in advance and cost $ 15. Saturday is the big day. Saturday is when the Games begin. Tickets for Saturday also cost $ 15 at the gate. On Saturday, you can see the caber toss, the shot put, the hammer throw, the tug of war, etc. For those not into the games(and the kilts), there are bagpipe and dancing competitions, whiskey tastings, great food like fish and chips, scones and strawberries, and steak and mushroom meat pies. For the kids in love with the movie, «Brave», they can make their own shield and participate in a parade. The games are the oldest Highland Games in the United States, and they attract people from as far away at Canada and even Scotland. That means even more manly legs to admire!
