My rating of five stars really centers around their bread. You might drive by this place a million times, but their status within the bakery world of bread is high… many area delis and restaurants get their buns and bread here to use on their menu. The history of this bakery is a long one. Originally, they were in Detroit’s «Brightmoor» neighborhood located on Fenkell(5 MIle) and they first opened in 1926. Their Italian sub is fairly descent, but it is in their breads, rolls and buns are where they shine.

My sister and I loved their cannolis so much that we went back for more. There weren’t enough cannolis so we decided to try out a few of the chocolate eclairs. BIGMISTAKE. Pastry was dry, custard was not creamy and unflavorful. So disappointing. Would not return unless just for the cannolis. Staff was unfriendly too. Boo!!!

Great Italian sub. Reg or sesame bun. Hidden gem sandwich. Stuffed pizza roll pretty solid to take home to warm up. All the breads here are top notch.

I get my bread here every week. My favorite loaves are the Italian and Polish rye. When I have guests for dinner, I serve West Fenkell’s bread or rolls. And don’t forget the paczki on Shrove Tuesday!
