This is a very warehouse-type wholesale store. Nothing is sorted or labeled in a way that a beginner like me would be able to understand. There was only one guy working: he was kind but not super helpful. That said, if you are very familiar with fabrics based only on their feel & look, this store had many options!

You MUST go to budlee fabrics. This is a hidden gem in Lodi New Jersey and has every fabric you could ever, ever want. I wandered in here when I first started seeing and after going to Joanns and other big retailers I quickly learned that no place can compare. They have aisles and aisles of amazing fabric, and the staff expertly guides you without being intrusive at all. They now recognize me when I come in, and I walk away with fabric that would cost me ~300 dollars elsewhere for about 75 dollars! You can get silk for less than 20 dollars a yard-seriously. Lining fabrics from 2 – 5 dollars a yard. I cannot say enough about this place. It actually does most of its business online as a wholesaler, but they still care about each customer that walks in the door. They are now expanding to have a back area with notions!!! Seriously, do yourself a favor and get to budlee today.

Now I’ve been in a million fabric stores being that I majored in fashion design in college… this is a great place! Everything is severly discounted and is great quality. the staff is great and help you a lot. I bought all my materials for a mermaid costume a few years ago and it literally cost me $ 19 for an awesome costume! Wish I had a pic to post!

I really give them a 3.5 star, but I just cant go to 4. My Grandmother sews children’s quilts for charity. Because it is for charity, she gets donations. But the donations are almost always pinks and butterflies, nothing appropriate for boys. So every Christmas, I give her about 10 – 12 yards of «boy-appropriate» cotton fabric. Blues, teddy bears, little airplanes.. .you get the idea. Usually I shop online, but I am determined to try to go local this year, and my first stop was Budlee’s. Budlee’s is a small, dark warehouse, filled to the brim with roll upon roll of fabric. At a guess, I would say that they buy up other places overstock & discontinued to sell at a discount. Prices are excellent. Selection is mixed, but I imagine it changes frequently and new stuff gets added. They had little cotton quilting material, and no juveniles. There was a modest amount of decorating fabric, in some really lovely patterns, which will probably bring be back next time I want to reupholster something. The majority of the fabrics appear to be basics and novelty fabrics, well suited to costuming. They also had fantastic prices on satin ribbons(25 – 75 cents a foot!) and a wide selection of ribbons, lace and other notions. Service was fine, but you had to ask for anything to be lifted off the piles for you to see it, and for pricing. I was able to find some nice«mixer» fabrics(a blue check and a blue polkadot – both $ 3 a yard!!!) but I ended up buying more than I needed since I felt bad for asking them to take them down. 1 yard minimums for purchase.

The first things I noticed about this place: shady-looking, dimly-lit(when there was light), and no pricing. However, the staff there was very friendly and the prices made some sense. But nevertheless, I don’t think I will ever go back to this place unless I had to. When I first arrived, I thought that the place closed down, but the entrance way just looks like a run-down ancient flee market. The one other customer was just leaving, so we were the only ones there and the staff left to go to the back without saying a word… I found some fabric that I had purchased previously in New York for a $ 1 per yard, so I waited for someone to tell me the price and cut some yards for me. When someone finally came out, he told me it was $ 3 per yard and that they had a minimum yardage requirement so I had to get more organza fabric than I needed. Overall, the experience wasn’t too terrible, but when I’m just looking for low-priced fabrics for decorating, this isn’t exactly the best placed to look. Next time I’d much rather go to JoAnn’s with a coupon or go to the 50% remnants section for a cleaner and higher quality shopping experience.

If you watch Project Runway and you’re familiar with Mood, Budlee should be very interesting to you. It’s a lot like Mood — rows and rows and rows of great fabric in all shades and types, knowledgeable staff, none of that corporate JoAnn’s bullshit. But unlike Mood, the prices are INCREDIBLY reasonable and the people are friendly. Helpful. Happy to see you. The place looks like a backwater garage, I’m not going to lie. But you go in and it’s fabric and fabric and more fabric, then you come out with a bill under $ 50 and enough fabric to wrap around your neighborhood twice and you think man, that was a helluva thing. Budlee is the thing I miss most about New Jersey. I’ve never seen such a gem. It’d be worth the 4-hour drive to go back, seriously. Check this place out!
