I read a lot of comments on the atmosphere. Here is my two cents. If i want a great atmosphere, I’d be happy to pay for it, in a museum, garden, outer space. But what I am being asked to pay for here is the food, and they hands down suck at making their food. My husband and I went for steaks and flank, both dry and full of tendons and impossible to chew through. Waiter was slow, we waited 50 minutes for our entrée to come. She walked by numerous times without noticing our wine glasses are empty, even when I am looking at her in the eyes to seek assistance, she flys right by until finally I motioned we needed a refill. What I am most disgusted with was the New York City price. If you can’t make a New York City grade steak, don’t rob people on over priced food because of lack of options around! Furthermore, this place is a fire hazard waiting to happen. Windows are both bolted with grills and filled with decorations… Wooden fireplace burning all night. Ask the owner about an up to date sprinkler system. I bet he doesn’t have one. Do not recommend!!!

Food was ok but not worth the asking prices. Ambiance is cozy but the place is a tad too dark to read the menus. Bring a flashlight or miners lamp strapped to your forehead.

On of my all time favorite restaurants. Very charming and artsy atmosphere. Delicious food and two huge fireplaces. Very special and unique.

Excellent ambiance, food, service, and greeting from the owner. With roaring fires and wood beams galore, the restaurant was cozy and atmospheric. However it was the perfectly cooked NY strip steaks(3 please!!!), flavorful pasta, and to-die-for maple cheesecake that made this place truly remarkable. I can’t wait to come back!

I agree with a previous review. Excellent food and fun atmosphere but the management is horrendous. While reviewing my credit card statement I noticed that they mistakenly over charged my card $ 400 for dinner. We called the owner and he reluctantly agreed it was his mistake and sent me a check in the mail. No note, no apology and no offer to buy me a drink if I came back. Pretty lame considering I was just lucky to catch his mistake. Good luck if you go and check on your bill

My wife and I really enjoyed the atmosphere. The Mill Tavern is located in an old barn, which has been transformed into an very unique dining experience. Ed, the owner warmly greeted us after we wandered around for a few minutes inside, looking for someone to seat us. Ed showed us to our tables and joked with us a bit. He is definitely a very warm host. Upon opening our menus, we were amazed at the high prices — there was only one entrée under 20 dollars, a hamburger. Nevertheless, we both agreed that it must be a worth the money, since we were there based on a glowing review from our innkeeper, and the place was very busy(on a Saturday night during ski season). We were promptly served bread with butter, which was homemade and very tasty. Our waitress took our orders, and quickly served us our salads. We both had the homemade bleu cheese dressing, which was very good; the greens were fresh and crisp. We both ordered pasta dishes, my wife had a vegetarian dish with portobello mushrooms. It was flavorless and she was very unhappy with it. I had a pasta dish with chicken, garlic, and pesto, which was quite tasty, but it was hard to find any chicken in the dish, the cubes were so small and infrequent. Neither of us ordered drinks or dessert. Our total bill came to over sixty dollars! That was sixty dollars for bread, salad, and pasta. Wow! 40 dollars would have been too much to spend for two pasta dinners, especially considering how flavorless my wife’s dish was. We both concluded The Mill Tavern is a tourist trap, set for the skiers who come to VT. Will never go back!

Nice atmosphere, but I was shocked at the high price of two pasta dishes, totaling, with tip, $ 62! And they were just OK. Nothing great. I feel for $ 23 – 26 menu items, they should have been outstanding.

Our favorite for many years now. Fantastic food. Hubby goes nuts for the prime rib! The kids love the restaurant too… especially roasting marshmallows in the fire downstairs while we wait to be seated. The atmosphere is very quaint and exactly what one would expect in an old Vermont mill. We’ve never had anything but excellent service and the owner, Ed, has always been very friendly. The prices are right on the mark for the area. Ski season wouldn’t be the same without The Mill Tavern. We look forward to eating there every year almost more than hitting the trails.

Thumbs up all around. I had the teryiaki steak, and while it wasn’t cheap, it was worth every penny. Large portion, very tasty sauce, perfectly cooked. Very nice service. Authentic VT atmosphere and dining experience. All round great experience.

Amazing they are still in business the way ed the owner manages the place. Wait 30 minutes when there are open tables. You can’t eat at the bar. You can’t get something to go. Sad thing is I will go back because the atmosphere is inviting even tho the owner isn’t. Want to try the food sometime when I have time to conform to eds rules

Holy food and portions! Everything on the menu is made to perfection. Warm, rustic and upscale gem in a small, ski town. Everything was amazing!(Except, an extremely slow and forgetful waitress — minus 1 star)

I love this place! It’s only open in the winter and they don’t take reservations so beware when planning to come here for dinner! You can always wait in the bar but after 6 the place is usually hopping especially on holidays! Get something meat! Prime rib, short ribs, burgers– all delicious! They are very accommodating for gluten free! It has a fun Vermont atmosphere with old tools and barn equipment decorating the walls and ceiling. Definitely come here with friends!

Having recently purchased a property nearby, I was very much looking forward to dining at the Mill Tavern. Unfortunately, it was a real disappointment. Although the ambiance of the place is great, when you get the menu you will experience sticker shock for what little they have to offer. I settled for the«Wild Mushroom» soup and the beer on tap(they only have one brand available on tap) just to buy at least something. The mushrooms were not wild, the soup tasted very earthy, and the beer was just so-so. Overall, this place is not up to the same standards as places I have eaten at in Chester, Grafton, or Manchester.

It’s a shame to have to give this restaurant such an average review because the interior is just charming, it’s very rare to find places like this, where each object has some story but you have to visit yourself to see. Now for the food, I went here 3 years ago and can say with great confidence that I had one of the best steaks in my life, however after returning twice and ordering the same thing I was very disappointed. The quality dropped tremendously and the place sort of lost it’s charm when I realized I grossly overpaid for an slightly below average piece of cow. I would still recommend this place, but only for the atmosphere, not the food

The vibe and atmosphere here, is something rare these days. I haven’t really ever been anywhere like it. It is rustic to the bone. It literally is an old Barn, with all wooden beams, wooden floors, and it creaks just like you would expect. There is miscellaneous farming equipment hanging from all sorts of the ceilings and walls, and it really is decorated to make you feel like you are in the haystacks. There are tons of lanterns that are gas lit, and they are really the only lighting that I can remember. It is so authentic, it is almost spooky. Their are lots of windows separating the room, that are large framed windows that at a very artistic vibe. Overall, the ambiance is truly unique, and I would recommend anyone driving by to stop in just to see it. It is any Pinterest Pinners dream. The menu has pretty expensive prices, considering there are not many other options in town to eat. Our whole group got an assortment of pastas, which were all decently flavored and well prepared. They have the most beautiful fireplace in the back bar area, that has marshmellows for roasting, which is a great idea! It is warm, cozy, and romantic. The food overall seemed to be good, but not as good as the atmosphere. A cool place to check out!

It’s a charming place. My family and I go there during our winter ski vacations at Stratton, once a year. The kids got hooked on our first visit, when they sat us by the fire and let the kids roast marshmallows for dessert. We have been going ever since(the kids plan which night we’ll go there), generally showing up at 5:30 when they open, on a weeknight. We love the ambiance, with the old tools hanging around and the rough floors. The service is always prompt and friendly. The food is good(not excellent). We were there tonight. Good wine, great mushroom pastry, good burger and veal stew, great chocolate mousse, decent brownie sunday, and of course the roasted marshmallows.(Note, they normally only let kids roast marshmallows on weekends.) As one of the other reviewers mentioned, it’s spendy for what you get and it’s not entirely consistent. Nonetheless, we’ll keep going there as long as we come to VT.

Really interesting spot to check out — you do feel like you are walking into a big mill — but super warm and cozy on a cold evening! The owner Ed is usually there, either chatting with people at the bar or roaming about — really friendly and nice to see an owner who is hand-on and genuinely enjoys meeting customers. Stopping in for one drink quickly turns into 8 … never want to leave!

The Mill can be very good or quite disappointing. Quite simply it’s inconsistent. The problem is it’s too expensive to be inconsistent. I love the atmosphere and while others have commented negatively I’ve always found the staff to be polite and good natured. The drink pours are a little short for the prices and they need more selections for wines by the glass. But don’t expect anything to change.

UNFORGETABLE — NOTIN A GOODWAY!!! Let me begin by saying, this dining experience has inspired me to write my first restaurant review… ever. Our encounter at the Mill Tavern in Londonderry, VT was absolutely HORRIBLE from start to finish! — WORSTCUSTOMERSSERVICEINRECOREDHISTORY!!! — RUDE: Owner, Waitress, and Bartender — Got sick form the steak that I ate — Forgetable menu selections, which they were out of half the entrees listed — Dirty bathrooms — Dirty kitchen — I saw this when having to hunt down our waitress because she was too busy knocking back a few«before I’m out of work beers» Honestly, the list could go on and on… the bottom line DON’T EATHERE!!! Keep driving past and continue on to another wonderful tavern called The Stone Hearth. A place that values there patrons :) ****NOTETOOWNER: Good customer service is the lifeblood of any business. Good customer service is all about bringing customers back and about sending them away happy — happy enough to pass positive feedback about your business along to others, who may then try the product or service you offer for themselves and in turn become repeat customers. Take a lesson from the Stone Hearth
