Tried to eat here yesterday and arrived just as the owner was moving all his stuff OUT. THERESTAURANTISCLOSED. So sad, really one of the last great places to eat in Long Beach. I’m so sorry to see you go, and hope to run into you soon. You will be truly missed. The first time I came here I remember taking one bite into the salad and exclaiming. ‘This is SO good, I want to move across the street just to be closer to this café’. Everyone here was so kind and genuine, the owner came out to talk to us each time and with such detail and passion about the food and the recipes. Total 5 star quality. Hope to see you guys soon, we need a place like yours around. :’(

Sadly, 4th Street Deli has closed, and closed for good. I walked by this afternoon and it was shut and completely empty. I was able to reach Varouj, the owner, by e-mail, and he confirmed the closing. Very sad news. It was a great place.

Thanx to my fellow Unilocalers I found this little spot. Being a truck driver in the harbor, I haven’t had the opportunity to come by here because of the parking, but this morning I cruised by just after they opened at 730am and since all the spots in front were empty, I had room to park. I knew I wanted a cold sandwich… and the double decker sounded great! When I got back to the office and opened this bad boy, I was quite impressed… this is how I would make a sandwich for myself! After looking over their take out menu, I may have to make a trip over on my motorcycle after work one day to give one of those flatbread pizzas a try. Bonus, they have a decent beer selection, too…

This is just the sort of place that I’m more than happy to frequent. The service alone deserves five stars. As other Unilocalers have mentioned, the owner is incredibly friendly and went out of his way to make sure that we enjoyed our visit. Great place for a simple, delicious sandwich and a cold beer for a great price. My tablemate and I split a veggie wrap and potato salad and found both to be fresh and tasty. They have a nice variety of beers — I sampled a one of the Nicaraguan variety and enjoyed it enough to have another. The menu is pretty extensive and I’m sure to be back for more. Great little downtown gem.

GREATSANDWICHES, GREATSERVICE! This place has great delicious sandwiches! My cousin and her friend were in the mood for sandwiches for brunch today so we hit up Unilocal to find a place within the area, as we always do when we can’t decide on a place to eat(Thanks Unilocal!). The top result was none other than: 4th Street Deli in Long Beach, CA Judging by the 101 reviews and the 4 ½ stars, I was immediately convinced and had to convince all of them to go. First of all, the place is conveniently located near the shopping and restaurant area which was a big plus because there was a nearby parking structure that offered free parking for 2 hours. Another plus! Okay, now moving on to the topic that actually matters: SANDWICHES! I was immediately greeted to the delicious and mouthwatering smell of toasted bread. We all looked at each other with faces of temptation. Already, we wanted to bite in. The atmosphere was very laid back, like a coffee shop which was equipped with some great tunes! I ordered the Cali or Roast Beef or Chicken sandwich(I chose chicken). While the others ordered the Tuna Melt Panini and The 4th St Double-Decker cold sandwich, which was a double-decker indeed; it was HUGE! She couldn’t even finish the other half. How’d mine taste? MMMMMMGOOD… The bread was nicely toasted on a french roll. The chicken was perfectly complimented by the bell peppers, red onions, mushrooms, swiss cheese, and balsamic vinegar. Overall, the combination created a nice savory bite. I ordered the combo so it came with a bag of Kettle Brand chips and a 16 oz drink! In total, I spent less than 12 dollars for a meal that was fulfilling and very much enjoyable. We waited a little while for our orders, but once we took a bite of our sandwiches, we knew instantly why. These sandwiches are carefully crafted to perfection to ensure your taste buds are geared and ready for a flavorful and tasty ride. Throughout our meal, the owner, who’s name I forgot to catch(My apologies), came by to check in on us and was completely welcoming and genuinely friendly. He made us feel right at home. The staff was completely pleasant and accommodating to us. THISISTRUECUSTOMERSERVICE :] Overall, this place is home to some really great delicious sandwiches at really great prices. Trust me, you’ll be satisfied. And, they don’t just sell sandwiches, they sell soups, salads, flat bread pizzas, wraps, and get this… smoothies! Also, they just added breakfast to their menu. Needless to say, I think I’ve found THE place for a quick bite. 4th Street Deli is the place to go for sandwiches, lunch, breakfast, superior service, or what have you. This is definitely a place that I will be going to very often. Thank You 4th Street Deli for the great experience Hope to come in real soon. Oh, I forgot to mention that the owner loves Unilocalers!

The BF recommended this place one day for brunch, cuz he’s a big fan of their omelets. He ordered the Spaniard omelet. I’ve never had an omelet on flatbread before, but it was a nice combination of flavors and textures. I ordered the Chicken Pesto Avo panini. It was delish. We sat outside and the weather in LB was nice and sunny. The place is really chill and the food was great. The owner was extremely nice and seemed to really care about his customers. Would definitely come here again.

What can I say, I’m a product of the«Mom & Pop» and it’s practically in my DNA to seek out local gems instead of patronizing conglomerations and chains. I was working(100.3 The Sound) an event at the Long Beach Pike this past Saturday and we needed to feed about 60 staff and clients. Luckily, the day before I hopped on Unilocal and searched«Sandwich Shops, highest rated, long beach» and 4th St. was first up! Varouj was SO warm and friendly and went out of his way to accommodate our catering order. Did I mention he can make one hell of a Pesto Roast Beef?! SOO good. Catering was super easy, sandwiches were labeled and a bargain to boot! Definitely recommending this one.

I like this place. I’ve only been there once and I had a good experience. I think the guy who took our orders is the owner. Either way, he was super nice! There’s one cook in the back and the owner takes care of everything in the front. There was a line of about 8 people and he literally took orders, rang people up, delivered your food, and picked up empty dishes at once! Now that’s «above and beyond». I ordered their meatball sub and my friend had their salami flatbread. I thought it was delicious. Especially, their red sauce! Yum. Also…they have organic Sweet Leaf Tea! I am totally a huge fan of that tea company. Mint & Honey… /droolz We’re definitely coming back for lunch.

I work in DT long beach on Pine and Ocean. This deli isn’t exactly a quick walk on your lunch break, but it is definitely worth it if you’ve got the time. Jennifer(and I’m not being biased because we have the same name: P) was especially nice and made sure our food was to our liking, meanwhile juggling other more demanding customers in the deli. On the day that I went there with my two friends, they had a new girl behind the register and it was her first day. I can only imagine the pressure she felt during that lunch hour rush with all of those custom sandwich orders — so I really didn’t mind the wait. She was a nice girl who smiled and apologized for the wait. I had a half of a tuna melt panini paired with a Caesar’s salad side and it was delicious! They also had a neat selection of cream sodas to choose from, some which I had never seen, so I tried the Cherries and Cream(Stewart’s). Yum!

Finally made it out to 4th St Deli today with the lunch crew. Initially I had my reservations as I’m thinking, it’s downtown and parking is going to be a bitch. I also thought it would be busy especially during lunch hour. Was wrong on both accounts. Pulled up and there’s parking on both sides of the street — paid of course but it’s meters so it’s not like we’re paying a minimum for a garage or valet. There’s also no one in the deli so not only do we get premium seating, we get first rate service. The staff was über cool. Helpful with their suggestions and friendly as well. The dining area isn’t great for groups but we moved a few tables around as we were the only ones there — we beat the crowd — when we left, there wasn’t an empty table indoors. There’s some outdoor seating on the sidewalk. The food was great. I ordered the Chicken Pesto Cavo with melted butter on top. Flavorful and affordable as a combo with a drink and chips came out to only $ 11. The other guys all ordered spaghetti with meatballs and judging how every plate was licked clean — they enjoyed their meals and I plan on trying that next time I’m there.

Support this place! It is so refreshing to see people so passionate about their food and business. The food is fresh and homemade. I got the tuna melt panini with the homemade albacore tuna salad… delicious! Our group also got the chicken caesar salad wrap, the caprese panini and the Mediterranean panini. All of them were amazing! I will be coming back here next time I am in Long Beach for sure! Varouj is an amazing owner! Super friendly, passionate, loves his customers and his business. Very cool to experience!

I decided to get what I pretty much always get when I try a new deli: pastrami. Coincidentally, it was also the sandwich the SUPER friendly owner said he was going to suggest after he realized from my staring at the menu for a couple minutes that I was new. To start off, I will say that the sandwich is not cheap. It’s far from expensive, but don’t expect a bargain. That said, it was at least good enough to come back on occasion. The cheese on the pastrami(I’m pretty sure it was Swiss) was nicely melted and very tasty; it was a good meat/cheese ratio. The meat itself was also quite good, but there was just something about it that kept me from saying«wow, absolutely delicious.» I’m not sure what it was, but I think it was just that it didn’t stand out as being above and beyond in any way. The roll had a good crunch as a well prepared roll should. The only real complaint I had about the sandwich was that I had a extra glob of mustard on one end of my sandwich. I’m sure it was inadvertent and isn’t always there, but it did make that end of the sandwich far too mustardy(yes, I’m making up words). Overall, I’d give the sandwich a solid 3. They do get 4, however, for the SUPER friendly owner. Like, seriously, the guy was just above and beyond friendly. I mean, I was sitting right by the soda dispenser to the point where I didn’t even have to get out of my seat to refill my soda, but he nonetheless came by and asked if I’d like him to refill my soda for me. I declined because, well, I’m not that big of a lazy arse, but still, it’s the thought that counts.

I was walking down Pine Ave. with the thought in my mind to eat at a specific café, which I will not name. However, came across 4th St. Deli, and remembered I had it bookmarked, so decided to give it a shot. The lady at the register was super friendly. I mean like Southern hospitality friendly, which is probably why I decided to order something. Got the half sandwich and salad combo with a French dip and Caesar salad. My hubs ordered the half pastrami and cup of chili. The nice lady asked if we wanted pickles and hot peppers on the side, which we replied«oh yes!». Very thoughtful of her, though not sure if that was an extra charge, but oh well! It’s pretty tiny inside, but hey it’s a neighborhood deli. About 4 tables inside and 3 outside on the sidewalk. They got a fair amount of to-go orders and dine-in while we were there on a Wednesday lunch. So, our food is good, but not great. The pastrami sandwich was probably the best followed by the chili. What was kind of odd, was that I was still a bit hungry after my meal. Kind of felt they could’ve had more meat in my French dip. But, nonetheless, I enjoyed the friendly service, and the pastrami sandwich is pretty good, a solid 3.5 stars, so will be back to try more off the menu.

One of the best Deli’s in Long Beach. Food is ALWAYS good, you’d be surprised by how good the meatball sandwiches are… the sauce is really amazing, and their turkey and avocado is excellent. The owner of the Deli is extremely nice and has put his soul into the Deli. It is worth trying… Prices are very reasonable to boot. Travel a few extra blocks on Pine Avenue and try 4th Street Deli!

It’s funny that 4th St. Deli is my first review on Unilocal because I believe I may have been one of the first customers that tried this place a few years back. Let me just say that from the first dining experience I had at 4th St. I was hooked. To start with we’ll discuss the food. Now I’m a pretty simple guy with pretty simple tastes. I tend to stick with the same choices. I’ve never needed to buy the variety pack. If I’m in the cereal isle at the grocery it’s usually either Cheerios or if I“m feeling slightly more daring, perhaps Honey Bunches of Oats. At 4th St. I stick with a solid rotation between the Turkey and Provolone, Ham and Swiss and my personal favorite, The Chicken Caprese. All are top notch with the latter sandwich probably being my favorite in all of Long Beach. To sum the food up in only one word is quite easy: delicious. Of course while the food is very, very good at 4th St. what really sets this joint apart is the customer service. The owner Varouj is a guy who in my humble opinion, just gets it. He takes the approach that every new guest’s experience may not just be a one shot deal but rather the first of a lifetime of visits. He’s incredibly friendly, he remembers your name and he seems to instill the same positive and friendly attitude in all of his employees. The guy is just pure win. If you are in the area you owe it to yourself to give this place a try. A true treasure of downtown Long Beach.

Once again a great little find by my fellow Unilocalers! The parking meter tips was awesome! Thank you! The service was great and very friendly. Everything tasted great I got the pastrami and chicken noodle. It was a chilly day. They service Diedrick coffee and mightyleaf tea! They also offer an array of drinks/smoothies, flat breads and wraps, and a small but good selection of desserts. I loved it here it made me miss New York a lot. You just don’t find delis like these in Socal.

My boyfriend drove around LB for lunch. I decided to pop out the Unilocal app on my phone and BAM! this place came up. We parked at the meter right in front. It’s only 24 min max(bring 1 quarter, 1 dime, and 1 nickel= 24 mins) Went it and order a hot pastrami and like everyone mentioned, along with a side of macaroni salad & the orange n’ cream soda. Ask for two cups. If you fill them up almost to the top with ice, it should give you two cups for two people. They have soda available, and a variety of soda bottles, energy drinks, teas, and chips awaiting on the left side. The glass display had delicious pastries. My eyes were getting bigger than my stomach. The sandwich was great. The meat was packed inside with the perfect amount of mustard and pickles. The bread was fantastic. I loved how it was super toasty and fresh! However, my boyfriend suggested there could be an option of a softer bread. I wish the sandwich was bigger. It was about $ 7 for it. I assume the price comes from the tasty and large amounts of meat. The macaroni salad was really good. I want to try the potato one next time. The owner was super nice. He saw I was taking some pictures of the front for a review on Unilocal. He was really happy that we found him on Unilocal and that we came in to try the place out. He gave us a complimentary Baklava cake(made by his mom) cut in half. Oh my goodness was it delicious! I loved the flaky top of the cake, and sweet bottom crust. I would’ve never known there were nuts inside. I usually don’t care of nuts, but they were so fine that I would’ve never known if i didn’t look. I want to come back for another 10! They were so good!!!

4th St Deli is definitely overlooked by many since they’re on Pine between 4th and 5th. If you’re nearby, you should check them out, if you’re usually going to lunch further down Pine, this is worth walking down to check out. These guys have awesome customer service!!! Honestly I go there just for the customer service. Not to mention they have an awesome drink selection in the cooler. Great sandwiches and have now added breakfast and coffee to their morning service.

Sleepy section of Pine Ave. The two dewds working there were really nice. The other patrons in the spot were classic drama/drug/pseudo homeless folks. Sweet. Jerry! Jerry! Jerry! The hot turkey sammie is super tasty. Give yourself some time because the oven works really slowly. Don’t half step. Worth giving a shot.
