Lee Robert E Elementary School

i attended this school in 1965 the best elementary school in Calif, or anywhere we were the first school to have brai. l that was incredible and we had many student play on the show «lassie» he saved the blind. what ya think lol the playground was amazing and lots of things to do .I loved the poles wonder if there still there… the best teachers ever and caring and supportive and hey Misses Lee our playground coach she rocked and she knew I was sassy then. lol I wish i could of been nicer student the principal said I was an angel with horns lol but mrs Jenkins got on to my bathroom excuse’s to gamble (penny toss) it was popular lol well just wanted to post this not sure why but i truly think this school was the highlight of my schooling. best of luck to the new students hope it’s as good back then .hey if anyone knows or has pictures of class ¹⁹⁶⁵⁄₁₉₆₉ I love to see them. thanks Debra lee Livingston/​Debra lee Hamilton AKA sassy lee

I taught as a student teacher at this school in 2007. I was really impressed with all aspects of the staff and student body. The teachers are truly dedicated to their craft and spent every bit of energy in order to improve their students’ lives. The students are encouraged to be intellectual, studious, and respectful. The administration was enthusiastic about making positive changes in curriculum and methods. I highly recommend this school.

What would the valiant confederate general think upon spooking the mini halls of this institution bearing his proud name?
Well, if the pint-​sized student body (at least when I went there) is any indication of our modern society, foreign to his beloved south, he’d probably think his role in the Mexican-​American War & the Civil War were in vain.
You just weren’t cool at Robert E. Lee Elementary unless you knew how to curse in Cambodian. Long Beach was the favored destination for Cambodian refugees when the Khmer Rouge was overthrown in the year of my birth.
To my grandmother’s approval, the school offered a Spanish reading curriculum which I reluctantly took but considering my current line of work, I’m grateful I did.
*Five stars and three cheers to my first taste of bad cafeteria food, politics, black eye, humiliation, puppy love and a diverse ethnic acceptance only the Long Beach Unified School District can tolerate… stick that in your corn pipe Mr. Lee!

Update:
Despite his loyalties, as misguided as they were, Robert E. Lee was a great general and I hate to see this school be a target for overzealous fascist under the guise of «tolerance». Keep the name and honestly celebrate diversity.
