Starr Video

Friendly and knowledgeable owner. It’s like the old Netflix where you can find an older movie, not like Redbox where you just get new releases. I really like this place!

I haven’t been here for ages but it is one of the few «video» stores in existence, (possibly nearing extinction). Young kids have no idea what these stores are because they never have to be in one. This store has so many movies that are not just DVDs, blue rays, and posters on walls as they classically should be, but they also carry some VHS! Kids, look it up. This is a family-​owned store which much of Bixby Knolls is also known for its «mom ‘n’ Pops» stores. Parking is always available and the workers are great. You get an ID card once you have membership (at least, that’s what I remembered of the last time I was here). I only came recently to walk through the aisles and smell what will inevitably become vintage, or has it already?

Starr is my neighborhood’s family-​owned & operated video rental spot, and I love it! I go once a month or so when I have time to myself. They have a great selection; I tend to check out the blu-​rays and foreign films. Their prices are extremely reasonable and the service is friendly. I hope they can stay in business because there is something I really enjoy about going and picking out a rental the old-​fashioned way, even though yes we have netflix.

Before Netflix, I’d switched from Blockbuster to Starr because they had every movie I wanted. I was on a foreign film jag and Blockbuster did not stock very many. Starr had every single movie I wanted. All of them, even the most obscure: Ponette, Toto les Hero, Ma Vie en Rose, High and Low, Delicatessen… When I drive by these days I sigh wistfully and recall those halcyon days at Starr Video. I really felt like I’d found MY video store in Starr. But of course now I don’t even have to leave the house.

I’ve been stuck in the crib working. This is my professional ‘high’ season and though work can be a drag, I do love it. I usually listen to internet radio, my i-​Pod, listen to TV or Unilocal while I am working. Hmmm… time for a visit to Starr Video.
This video store ain’t your Blockbuster. This is your old school mom and pop… or should I say brother and sister video store. Now let me tell ya up front… I’m into old school 1930s’ gangsta and drama movies. I haven’t rented a video in ages, so blow the dust off my Blockbuster card. I can catch all that shit on cable. I come to Starr video for one reason. The curtained room off to the side with a sign that reads «18 and over only.»

Now at Starr Video, you can rent any new releases, old issues, Asian flicks, Latin Cinema, independent films… all of that. But I only go for the curtained room; porn. And once I take porn, I don’t return it so they just sell me the DVD’s. They know me. I know they think I am weird, ya know a chick bypassing all the videos and heading straight for the curtained room. Hey, no shame in my game, love. I do believe that I am a grown-​ass woman. Generally, there are about 1 to 3 other pervs in the room scouting for a flick in order to score or to just watch after the game. (Which I highly recommend) They eye me curiously, lookin’ over my shoulder to see what titles I’m perusing. I keep it real, reaching for «South Central Hookers #18» or some particularly interesting Latin skin-​flick or my favorite, a compilation of gay, straight and group sex. When I go into Starr Video, they know that I am here to swipe the debit card with a vengeance. They simply blush and look away.
Damn, I can’t remember the last time I blushed.
OK…so for the prudes among us, I didn’t mean to get too graphic, but ya know… it gets boring in the studio sometimes. I don’t always want another person in the room per se… but watching a pair of strangers get it on my computer screen for the explicit reason none other than to entertain me and… OK make me horny… Priceless!
