Agree tear this crap out. It’s man-made in the first place. Left over from WWII thinking. It’s outdated and smells. But it is good for the fishing types. It gives them access to all this wonderful still water. They could tear out most of it and still design it in a way that allows them to keep their harbor and boat areas. And don’t try and play the«it will hurt the natrual creatures that live there». Guess what? Those creatures will find a new home. Plus, man built this, so man can take it back down.

Sink it! We want waves! And to the guy catching fish and giving it to the neighbors as ceviche: Stop poisoning your neighbors. The water inside the breakwater is toxic soup because the breakwater is there preventing circulation and confining all the pollution coming off the shore. It’s the filthiest beach water in the entire state. Look it up. Eat those fish and enjoy your cancer. Sink it!

You gotta be kidding me. The first reviewer failed to mention any negatives when the negatives are so glaringly apparent and many. A) The breakwater prevents natural water circulation. Because of this, Long Beach has the dirtiest water of a publicly accessible beach in California. Simply put, it keeps all the clean water out and all the scum in. 2) The federal breakwater robbed Long Beach of it’s once thriving beach tourism. When the waves went away, so did the surf. Many tourists who want to visit a prime example of a Sunny Californian beach go elsewhere. Furthermore, many local residents are forced to commute in order to swim and surf clean and active waters. Businesses suffer due to what would otherwise be a soaring tourist trade. D) The resulting filth, bad smelling air, and lack of waves decreases property values. House hunters move elsewhere. The federal breakwater was built with the original purpose to thwart enemy torpedoes and submarines. It is a remnant of the naval station that no longer exists here and therefore is obsolete. Efforts are being made to convince the government to remove the unnecessary portions of the breakwater. Contact your local SurfRider chapter to join the cause.

«Give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Show a man how to fish and he eats for a lifetime.» He also may get a divorce, but hey, at least he can fish! I got my next door neighbor into fishing within the last couple years and he got so «hooked»(haha get it? HOOKED! Like a fish! I’m so F**ing witty) that he went and bought a fishing boat. Friday, he and I headed out of Long Beach to the edge of the Federal Breakwater, a man-made jetty that essentially cuts off any kind of surf but makes for great fish habitat that can only be reached by boat. We fished for most of the day and caught just about every species of fish from God’s big pond. Kept about 10 keepers(of Legal Size) and took em home and made a whole mess of ceviche. Gave most of it away to the other neighbors so they could eat for the day.
