Previous owner passed away. Under new management, they changed the menu and took away my beloved date shake. I was heartbroken. This place used to be great. Great food. Great people. Amazing date milkshake. What more could a girl ask for? Now no more date shake. No more great sandwiches. Service is so so. Haven’t been back.

Not okay to have the wrong hours. Coming here on foot although I live close by doesn’t make me happy whatsoever! Not okay! I can’t be a frequent customer when I have no idea if they’ll be open!

I didn’t care for this place at all, which was so disappointing. We came here on a Saturday night for dinner, and we waited over 25 minutes for our food. I ordered the avocado burger with fries. When it finally got to us, there was something spicy on my burger. I couldn’t even tell what it was, because it was too dark for me to see my food. Plus, the steak fries were cold and nothing special, just your run-of-the-mill frozen fries out of a bag that were tossed into the fryer. The worst part is that the burger fell apart and was too messy to eat comfortably. The soggy bun fell apart; it couldn’t hold up to the wet burger toppings. The whole thing was just a soppy mess. Perhaps they just had an off night. The two guys behind the counter seemed pretty stressed, and they messed up drink orders for the two parties ahead of us. I would like to give them the benefit of the doubt, but don’t know that I’d be willing to return for a second visit.

This place is a must!!! Freddie the owner was such a pleasure to meet. Such a nice guy and puts all effort into the small details that make it overall a chill dining experience, high quality food and all worth your dough. Freddie makes the patties and buns every morning. Onion rings taste like homemade. Don’t miss an opportunity to chow down here!!!

Great burgers and service. Patty is on the thicker side(.5 lb) so beware of the doubles and monster! Tasty steak fries as well. Only thing is that the bun they use kind of crumbles and falls apart easily but other than that all good I’ll be back for sure!

Thanks to Unilocal,I found this little gem in LB! Whistle Stop café is an awesome little hole-in-the-wall café in long beach. Great outdoor seating and nice pictures/art on the walls. I ordered the Monster burger combo. Double patty, double cheese, double bacon, onion rings, jalapeño poppers, avocado, lettuce, tomato, onion and mayo ALL come on this burger. Comes with a good size drink and french frys. My meal was 5 stars. Couldn’t have it any better. I can’t find anything that I don’t like about this place. Will be coming back with family and friends in the near future!

I am so bummed. I came here when it just opened and it was amazing. They had these amazing chips and burgers. I came fairly regularly. Then they closed for a little while and sold the business. I tried it tonight and it’s not nearly as good. Soggy hamburger bun and meat that taste like gasoline. The fries are okay. I’m really sad and I hope the previous owner is doing well.

Nestled in between some older homes, you’ll find this cute burger joint that has that«Ive been around for generations» type vibe to it. Being the burger aficionado that I am, I had to get the biggest burger on the menu which was the Monster Burger combo. That bad boy came with double meat, double cheese, double bacon, avocado, onion rings, fried jalapeño poppers, and cream cheese. That mofo was huge! I wish I would’ve told them to cook the meat medium so it’d be a bit juicier but it was still delicious either way. Hospitality was at a 100%. They made sure we had everything we needed when we received our order also.

I walked to WhistleStop today, not knowing it had been closed for a time, and saw that it was under new management. I was super disappointed to see that the menu was totally different and they no longer have the homemade chips with parm that I was craving and walked there for. Upon my arrival, I went throw away my doggie’s poop bag in the trash that was outside. A man that was sitting there(and I believe to be the new manager) told me not to throw it away in that trash. I told him I was going to be eating here and I obviously need to throw it away, because I wasn’t going to keep it with me at the table. This was my first bad taste in my mouth about the new management. After seeing the menu was different, I almost turned around and left, but I thought I would give it a try because I had walked all the way there and I was hungry. Then after I ordered my burger, the Mike Tyson with a lettuce wrap instead of a bun, I hear the guy that took my order tell the manager, «She didn’t want a bun, she doesn’t eat bread, it was a lettuce wrap.» Apparently the manager thought I didn’t want lettuce :-/. So when they fixed it they brought it to me, I opened my box and noticed that it indeed was lettuce wrapped, but the burger patties were in crumbles and instead of jalapeños(listed on the menu) I got pepperoncinis. Weird. Then, I went over to grab a fork, and the forks were in an open container outside next to the building and they were covered in dirt. I dug in for one at the bottom. Overall, the food was okay. The fries were nothing special. The burger tasted better than it looked, and I liked the spicy mayo. I ate like half of it and the manager came back outside and asked me how the food is. I sort of held my tongue because I didn’t want to go off on him. It was a very disappointing experience. Hoping that the people that loved the old Whistle Stop will read this before going and getting your heart broken!

Looks like they’ve closed temporarily. No date mentioned when they would open again. But it says they’ll open«under new management soon» Can’t wait till they are back!

We finally had the chance to check out Whistle Stop and were pretty stoked. We both had the jalapeño popper burger, with fries, and a date shake. The burger was hand made(not a frozen patty) and tasted homemade. Adding the poppers was a nice touch. The fries were great with a couple good dipping sauces. The date shake will definitely rival any other date shakes in the area. The staff was super friendly and service was great. My only request; give out stronger and wider straws for the shakes. They are thick and delicious, those little weak straws render themselves useless when you sip on the shakes.

Whistle Stop was my first restaurant meal post-Taiwan trip. «Welcome back to America,» it said with its super mega greasy grilled cheese pastrami that poured grease through three layers of plasticky paper and onto my passenger seat. «Have a great stomachache!» So, of COURSE grilled cheese with pastrami will be greasy. I’m not even complaining about that. But this was just grease and rubbery cheese and stringy meat with bread that was strangely sweet, like a Hawaiian roll or something. I ate it, but only because I was really hungry and hadn’t bought groceries yet. However, I have to say that Whistle Stop’s date shake is wonderful. It really tastes like dates, isn’t too cloying despite dates’ natural tendency to be cloying, and it settled my stomach from the sandwich.

We stopped here for lunch. They have great service, the owner was really friendly. I had the hamburger combo. My fiancé had the fried green tomatoes/grilled cheese sandwich. Plus we tried the new Pumpkin Date milkshake!!! Very delicious! The burger was huge and tasty with rosemary garlic fries. Garlic herb dipping sauce for the fries was perfect. We’ll be coming back soon!

«You used to call me on my cellphone, late night when you need my love…» The song above got nothin to do with the Whistle Stop. But that was the song stuck on repeat in my head. This is an outdoor eating experience where you can bring your doggies. There is cold water for customers and the staff here are really nice and helpful. I recommend: Dipping sauce and their crispy fries is a for sure win! Next I recommend their fried green tomatoes. The burger I consumed in 32 seconds flat did not stand a chance… delicious! The line here during dinner can get busy and long which is a dislike for me. Luckily, we beat out the crowd. For my next visit here, I will listen to some Childish Gambino and lay off the Drake.

I’ve seen this place on my way to 4th street and tonight was THE night. Stopped by, ordered cheeseburger and side fries. The burger was good! Decent size and well made. Fries were AMAZING! Crispy and just right. This will be one of my go-to burger joints in LB from now on. The outside patio area for eating was pretty sweet too, even at night. Don’t know how strict they are about the $ 10 minimum to pay with a card but just a heads up.

Great burger place! Saw it opened up a little while ago and finally made the trip out. Ordered a chocolate shake which hit the spot. bottled cokes are always the best as well. Added jalapeño poppers to my cheese burger. SOFULL. Everything was great down to their special dip for the fries, has a hint of Rosemary. Definitely put me in a food coma for the afternoon. My only critique is that my burger was a little over cooked to my liking, but I’ll be sure to ask for it med rare next time! And there definitely will be a next time!

Disappointing. Ordered the cheeseburger, fries, and vanilla shake. Received the milkshake first(very tasty) then the cheeseburger, and then I waited for the fries. 5 mins later I realized they forgot that I ordered fries. So I asked them and they were like«oh rly? sorry lemme make u some now» Then they made fresh fries, but they were too hot to eat. I already finished 75% of my burger. They were good, but oversalted. The cheeseburger was below par. Brioche bun was toasted, so it was strangely crunchy accompanied with the light fluffy texture of the brioche. The patty was not a team player, it lacked flavor. Cheese did itS job. The whistlestop sauce was giving no alley oops to any of the players. Overall a very plain burger, needed some bacon, different sauce, or Kobe Bryant to help it out.

Whistle Stop is a super cute little eatery on 4th Street. You order at a window and have the option of taking your food to go, eating outside on the patio, or eating in the covered seating area. It was a super nice day so it was perfect for eating here. I really like that this place is not a formal sit down restaurant, yet isn’t actually fast food. First off, the employees here are extremely friendly and welcoming. Excellent service! I ordered a cheeseburger with fries. The cheeseburger comes with the usual toppings with your choice of onions(crispy, raw, or grilled). The brioche bun was my favorite part of the burger. The crispy onions were also really delicious too. The burger itself was overcooked for my taste and a little too salty, but it was pretty meaty weighing in at 6 oz. Not bad for only $ 6. I think I will try the grilled cheese next time because I wasn’t too excited about the meat patty. Or, maybe I will ask for it medium. The fries came in a ridiculously large portion for only about $ 2! Definitely enough to share between two people. They weren’t mind-blowingly good, but they were hot, crispy, and plentiful. They come with an aioli, but it’s not enough. You might want to ask for an extra aioli container. I will be back here since the place is cute and whimsical, the service is good, and the food is decent as well as well-priced. I don’t know if I would get the burger again before I try the other items on the menu though.

Super cute. No indoor seating, but lots of cover. Grilled brioche(add meats! Chix, pastrami, ham, fried green tomatoes!), cold sandwiches(same toppings), parm and rosemary chips, burgers and shakes! Simple menu. Only veggies if they’re fried, but for a fancy new American style, looks good! Cold chicken sandwich is yummy! But think I’d ask for a non white bread(think this is brioche). The parm and rosemary chips are hot and fresh! Nom! Totally worth trying!
