Abaya Alterations

I will definitely be returning to Abaya for future alterations. As English is not her first language, she’s not great over the phone, but she is extremely friendly in person, and professional, quick, and very reasonably priced. She hemmed my tulle skirt for my wedding rehearsal dinner beautifully.

VERY nice old woman (looks about 100 and has the most perfect wrinkles). I walked in and she welcomed me with open arms, even after she told me she couldn’t alter my dress. She told me she is having health issues but still wants to keep working, that’s why she can only do simpler work such as hem. However, she graciously gave me the card of her friend’s shop. She and I talked travel for a good 20 minutes and then we hugged. So random, yet so wonderful. I went to the other shop a couple minutes away, and got my dress altered.
I have read the reviews below about her being «rude». Well, for one, English is her THIRD language (sarcasm/​jokes are most likely lost in translation). She is also about 100 years old, so her hearing over the phone probably isn’t the best. ALSO, a great seamstress cannot give you a price on any alteration until she has actually seen and felt your garment. Take the time to go to the store and SMILE because it is all going to be okay.

I loved this charming woman but don’t agree with the $ estimation of her prices.
brought in 2 dresses. She said she wouldn’t change a zipper nor alter a bodice on one dress but could do the hem on the second. I found it odd that she does «alterations» but can only do the hem? She then informed me it would cost $ 50 which shocked me as it was a simple hem– a satin dress, unlined. The dress cost $ 20 so I had no interest in paying that much and thanked her for her time and said I’d try to do it myself. She asked how much I’d thought it would cost and when I said «$ 15» she laughed but lowered price to $ 35 which I hesitantly agreed to.
She referred me to another tailor to do the alterations she wouldn’t do. When I picked up my hemmed dress I also went to pick up my other alteration at second tailor. I produced the hemmed dress and asked how much she would have charged. She looked it over and said «$ 15» justifying my estimation! At least Abaya referred me to a better tailor who charges fairly.

She is old school and awesome. A true professional, who takes pride in her work. Clearly she’s been at it for a while and she knows what she’s doing and how to please. I also appreciate that she knows her limitations. I took her a few suit coats and needed some restructuring and she said it was a bit out of her skill set, and she referred me to another awesome old school tailor. Know that she is cash only.

Such a nice lady. And super fast service. Had my two suits for my wedding tailored here. Highly recommended!

Rude lady answered the phone. I asked approximately how much it would cost to alter the length of a jacket. And she said «how should I know?! I haven’t seen it. Good bye» without even giving me the chance to say anything

I love this place!!! The lady that works there is super nice!!! I came in for an emergency re-​hem of my suit slacks and with no hesitation the lady did it for me right on the spot. She was cordial and very pleasant to me. I will definitely be going back here for all of my alterations.

I was that customer rolling in 2 minutes before closing time and Therese did my alteration immediately and wouldn’t even charge me. «Bring me a real project next time and I’ll charge you extra!»
A++ for efficiency, kindness plus bonus points for sassy humor. Will be back!

I love Therese, she’s like a grandma to me! She does the best job in all of Silverlake!

Can’t recommend this woman enough! She is such a sweet, old lady.
She really listens to what you want, and is very honest about what can and can’t be done.
I had all my dress pants tailored very slim fitting, with an extreme taper and cropped above the ankles. I showed her some pictures and she knew exactly what to do. Pants came out great!
I also had her slim up my blazers and the results were great, again.
A hearty ⁵⁄₅ for service, friendliness, and excellent work!

Nicest lady ever

A rude woman answered the phone. When I asked her how much it is to alter jeans she mumbled something and hung up. When I called again to ask and said we got disconnected, she said «didn’t I answer you?»
I said «no I think you hung up»
Rude lady said «I told you and I hung up because I’m busy. How much do you think jeans would cost a thousand dollars?»
Rude lady please don’t be rude to potential customers or else you’re not gonna have any. :)

The lady who works here is so sweet and honest. She always tries to get the work done in the most quick and efficient manner. Her prices are low and reasonable. She is very sweet and puts love into each piece she works on. She is my go to for alterations!

Amazing, amazing, amazing. I took a skirt in here a year ago and she was so backed up with appointments she told me it would be weeks. A year later, some antique lounge pants needed elastic replacement and I figured it would be a job I’d only trust to professional. And I’m glad I did. She only charged me ten bucks! And she really took her time on it, because the satin was so delicate. When I came to pick them up, they were not finished, and she offered to refund me half my money. But honestly, when you invest in your clothes enough to get them tailored or repaired, you’d prefer to wait for it to be done right. This woman has definitely earned my business.
She did tell me, however, that prices were going up due to rent increases. Let’s try to keep her little shop open!

Love this place, came in to pick 3 items up I left there a little over a month ago and it was there, waiting in a cute bag.
If you like old world tailors who keep it real, this is your spot.
It’s cash only, I told her lucky me, I have some cash leftover from winning in Vegas. She told me a very cute story about when she was first taken to a casino, they sat her in front of a slot machine.
She played it for a few spins, and she hit a jackpot of some sort and the machine starting going crazy, making all these lights, and dinging. She thought surely the thing was broken, and that she fled in fear of having broken the slot machine.
Come to find, she had actually won.
She said, «I don’t make money unless it’s through sweat.»
I’ll bring things to her for sure, I was very happy with her work.
Oddly enough, when I rolled up, a cowboy Troy type was picking up some stuff, so, if Cowboy Troy gets his stuff serviced here, it must be legit.

Recently took a bridesmaid dress to get hemmed by her and she did a wonderful job for a very reasonable price. It was a 300 $ satin with chiffon double layer wrap dress, and she did it for 45 $. Although she did mention she would have to raise prices next month due to rising rent.
She was no fuss, very reasonable about getting it back to me on time, and when I had to pick it up on the day the shop was closed in an emergency, she accomodated me. She is very serious about her business and is a sweet and wonderful lady. Will be back with other items.

I moved to Silverlake recently, and wanted to find a slightly closer tailor who could be as reliable as my previous dude in Glendale. Just tried this place out based on the Unilocal reviews, and I love this woman already.
I had taken a dress that needed a very simple alteration (darts) to the cleaners that I have been frequenting. They quoted $ 16, which I feel is ridiculous, considering making darts is about the easiest thing you can do on a sewing machine. If I still owned a machine, I would do it myself.
I brought the same item to Abaya, as well as a pair of Zara suit pants that my fiancé had altered by another tailor who had taken them in too much in the seat. She altered both these items for $ 15 total. The work was completed on time by the day she quoted. I didn’t try to bargain her down or anything, her rates were just that reasonable to begin with.
She told me she has been there for 17 years. I will be bringing her a lot more business over the years!

The only place to go. She is a wonderful woman with a beautiful story. She takes pride in her work and it shows. I wish I could give more stars.

Many, many years ago, I had a Spanish grandmother. She died. She died. But before she did, I learned a lesson about accepting other people’s quirks.
Tata, we called her, was temperamental and expressive. After many years of being a Puerto Rican expat etching floral patterns on the ends of silverware at a factory in Brooklyn, she needed to find an outlet for her inner creative rage.
My mother was satan to her. Aunt Nilsa’s hair was set on fire. I smoked my first cigarette at 4 years old. She stuck a dildo in her mouth and jumped into a pool fully clothed.
And then one day she abruptly went to Florida from Brooklyn and had a heart attack on the plane. The passengers thought she was sleeping.
Therese fondly reminds me of my grandmother. So as someone who reminisces about the expressive temperament of old people, Therese still scares me. Keep it simple and uncomplicated and she won’t have a fit!
But if she does have a fit, remember her temperament perhaps indicates a fiery passion that also reveals how good she is at tailoring. She is as reasonably priced and as skilled as the tailors in the downtown garment district.
She may hate you if you challenge her but she doesn’t hold grudges. So don’t take it personal if she hates you because she won’t remember it (or you) the next day.
