Came here on a Saturday morning as we were starving, the atmosphere was really nice. However, the baked lemon meringue pancakes lackluster. I didn’t taste the citrus or the lemon in the pancake, just felt like the pancakes were overpowered by the butter. p.s. the bacon is amazing. I would try this place again and give it another shot.

We came for dinner. So here goes. Small location but can accommodate large parties. Dim lighting, great for dates. Service was great. Small tray of a variety of warm olives. Bread was interesting. I could taste some herb in it. I liked it. Shrimp with garbanzo was good. Shrimp tasted fresh not prefrozen. Beef with noodles. Beef tasted as if it had been grilled on wood not coal. Very good and tender. Cheesecake was more of a NY style than creamy which I prefer. All was great Free caneles when u leave. Delicious!

I love it here! Nice service, delicious food, lovely atmosphere. Lamb burger, roast chicken, market fish are always satisfying meals and if you like cheesecake don’t miss out on theirs.

It’s quiet as I step in. It’s a week day, so the tables are empty. I take a seat next to the open kitchen. I promptly order the best item on the menu — the fried chicken sandwich. I wait with bated breath in gustatory anticipation. I hear the bubbling oil lapping around the chicken and my stomach growls. I smell the fried skin and my mouth waters. Then, suddenly, the white plate appears on the bar counter and there it is. The thick slabs of deep fried chicken sit beautifully on the shiny sesame bun. I bring the sandwich to my mouth and sink my teeth into the most exquisite combination of first fluffy bun then crispy, savory, perfect chicken. The flavor rushes out of the tender meat and then I sink my teeth further and taste the very slight tang of sauce and thinly sliced raw red onion. The whole bite warms my esophagus down to my toes. I revel in this delightful bite. I then take bite after bite until the whole sandwich disappears. I am not sad to see it go. I am perfectly content, as I sit with the most delicious fried chicken sandwich in my stomach, nourishing not only my physical body but also my soul. I feel utterly complete in this moment. I need no more.

I love to munch at brunch Oh it’s not breakfast It’s not lunch It’s my absolute favorite — it’s time for brunch! Aside from my horrible poem, Canelé had flying colors to satisfy my brunch cravings. Located in Atwater, it’s a small restaurant that provides many brunch options. Oh drinks? You can get a mimosa or perhaps a prosecco & hibiscus or maybe a Belle du Jour? And if you don’t feel like drinking, well there’s the standard coffee and juice options too. On Saturday I ordered the Egg Cocotte and oh my goodness — this was so YUMMY! The eggs were cooked in a small dish along some cream and other flavors. I would get my bread on the side, pierce the egg yolk, and dip my bread into the rich cream and yolk. I was so delighted by my plate that I fell silent among my group of friends eating. The accompanying arugula salad was also delightful as it made me feel clean after I took bites eating my main dish. The house bacon was also good, but was a bit burnt for my taste. The sides were pretty black and I just don’t like it too crispy. I made do with what I had and ate the parts that weren’t charred and it was fine. I didn’t feel like complaining since I was pretty hungry at the restaurant and just wanted to eat. A girl’s got to eat especially me. If you can, you should go on a Sunday. Then after brunch you can stroll to the farmer’s market right after to walk off all that delicious food off.

Revisited a longtime stand by for brunch the other day and it was WELL worth the revival. I had the duck hash, my friend the shrimp and grits. My only complaint was — more of those delicious pickled onions please!

My good gracious. I have a few words to describe this place, and they all speak of praise and wonders. Let me say this alone: prunes, thou art delicious. My friend ordered the French Toast with prunes. Normally I’d think of prunes as a bathroom joke so I got the pancake, but these prunes were pure California gold. If you’ve ever heard of the bliss point, well, Canele nailed it. The brioche is a billowing, perfectly-browned, cooked-all-the-way-through-and-in-no-way-doughey, creation of Zeus’ kitchen. The prunes are an unlikely and perfect complement. The baked lemon meyer pancake and thick house-cured bacon were a marvel anywhere, but paled beside the French Toast wonder. Needless to say, no French Toast is complete without savory bacon. So don’t skimp, people. Enjoy!

I felt like splurging on myself the other night and had dinner sitting at their communal table and staring out the huge window. While the whole experience and my mood that night weighed on giving five stars, the warm asparagus«salad”/appetizer I ate inspired me to come back here and update my last review. It was whole pieces of roasted asparagus with kumquats, olives, and fava beans… it was so delicious. The tart/bitter/acidic kumquats were just… wow…I’m salivating just thinking about it. She also helped me choose a nice dry white wine(sampled two) to go with the yellowtail main dish. The food was just so tasty and the atmosphere perfect for«me» time.

I can talk about that bacon all day long… We came here for brunch not too long ago on a Sunday and luckily were seated promptly. I’m kind of impatient when it comes to eating so that’s a plus. Most good brunch spots require a wait. I had the duck has with sweet potatoes, pickled red onions and fried eggs. Very good. My friend had the perfectly fluffy omelet with arugula, spring onions, roasted peepers and mushrooms. I tried it and it was delicious. Delicious enough for me since I’m not a fan of omelets. Maybe, it was the butter and perfectly fluffy eggs. Now back to the bacon. Yes, serious stuff. House cured and almost like a slice of ham. You’ll need to run two hours to burn this bacon off. I’ll need to come back here again. My friend kept on pointing to the fried chicken sandwich that was every other table. Service here was great. You’re limited to street parking or parking in the neighborhood. Great to see good things in Atwater Village compared to decades ago.

Dude. Dude. DUDE. This is the f***in best brunch/breakfast I’ve ever had in LA. I mean my taste buds where shooting orgasms left and right. That French toast is made fresh out of the oven, the TOAST is BAKED fresh from the oven! Then coated in egg and fried, but the EGG is like built into the batter?! What’s going on here!!! And then the HERBOMELETE! Whaaaatttt is thisss??? I’ve never had eggs this amazing with… what is that??? Ricotta cooked right in? IFYOUHAVENTBEEN HeRE YET, get ready for everyone to start talking about in GLENDALE/ATWATER I’ve new we used so many caps in a review before!

Disappointing in more ways than one. For starters, the service is sub-par. Granted, they get REALLY busy during Sunday brunch time but… only once did a server come by to refill our coffee. Our food took FOREVER to be prepared and served and was over cooked(almost burned) at that. Aside from the ill-prepared eggs, the baked pancake with Meyer lemon custard(which I was so looking forward to) tasted far too«eggy» and didn’t have the slightest hint of lemon. In fact, if it weren’t for the name and the lemon wedge garnish, I would guess it was botched French toast. They don’t take reservations for parties under 6 — just a note and not a factor in my rating. Very unlikely I will return here since there are a ton of great eateries in the area.

Canelé is a hole-in-the-wall restaurant located between a Bikram yoga studio and a light fixture store in the Atwater neighborhood. It is a bit hard to find passing by, but it is well worth driving back around the block to find it. Parking is limited to street parking, which can be a problematic if it’s a busy day. Once seated, our party was treated to the dining area, which included the open kitchen where we could see the chefs working hard at their craft. The dining area was dimly lit, which adds a nice ambiance. The cuisine served here has a foundation in French and Italian. In addition to daily specials, the restaurant menu is listed on a wall chalkboard for all to see. The appetizer was a daily special of homemade chorizo served with an over easy egg and potatoes. Very flavorful! Our main course was a beef with bordelaise sauce, creamed spinach, and some potato cake. The sauce was so yummy and the beef was cooked to perfection and the spinach was so smooth. For dessert, we shared an orange flavored pound cake. The cake was moist on the inside and the sour cream topping added a tasty sourness to the sweet cake. Overall I liked the atmosphere here. The service was attentive, but not overbearing. The dining area is small and tight which to some could be intimate and to others claustrophobic. The food is definitely good enough to warrant a return visit from me in the near future.

Duck Confit, Market Salad & Canelés DEElicious! Needed to find a restaurant near Topline wines in Glendale, since we go there to pick up wines we order by the case every few months(best wine prices in town). So my husband researched nearby French restaurants and found Canelé. The duck confit and market salad were both sublime. And then as we are leaving we are offered a canelé. My husband refused his, but not I. Went out the door, took a bite, and then another, and then, kind soul that I am, offered him the last little bite. Next thing I know we are back in the restaurant; I to pee, and he to ask about buying more. As they were $ 1 each, he bought a half dozen. Waitress Sebrina very accommodating, and Fiona, the manager(I presume) swapped favorite musicians. A very enjoyable evening! We will be back.

YASSSSS. This place has the BESTgazpacho I’ve had in LA. Too bad its a seasonal item, but man can they do it well. The burger is quite tasty as well as the cod brandade. You can tell this kitchen is working hard trying to create great dishes for you. Dark, romantic ambience though tends to be really chilly everytime so dress warmly.

Ambiance: Casual, semi coffee shop feeling with the open kitchen and wood tables and counter! Not too loud but not silent, good for catching up with friends. Food: I had the fried chicken sandwich without buns since I’m watching carbs — super deliciously crispy, the crispy part does kind of fall of the chicken when you cut it. Yummy mayo on the lettuce, pickled green tomato slices and sliced onion! The pickled green tomato was a fun touch but I think regular pickles would have been a good added crunch! Compared to the fried chicken at ink. sack — it was crunchier but less pickly! Also free refills on iced and hot coffee! Bathroom: Nice, candle lit, clean. The unisex one had a flushing urinal that someone didn’t flush! Gross! Parking: Found free street parking on a side street, Brunswick! Cost: $ 20 per person with coffee!

yummy yummy yummy food! I came in with my girlfriends for Sunday brunch, the place itself is really tiny and we know that it’s going to be busy so we came in around 10am. we still had to wait for about 45 mins before we were seated. the tables are so closed to each other that I felt really cramped and boxed in. we ordered the baked pancake which was light, fluffy and so delicious. we also ordered the shrimp grits, fried«farro» and the steak hash. overall, they were all quite delicious even though they’re all more on the heavier side for brunch menu. the only thing I «dislike» was the fact that it took quite a while before someone came to our table and the food takes a longggg time to get to our table. considering we had waited 45 minutes to eat, waiting another 25 – 30 minutes before getting our food is quite annoying. I guess just be prepared to not come here starving, cuz there’s a possibility that you’ll ended up being«hangry» before you get to eat anything.

Canele is located at a very hipster area called atwater village. My gfs and I circled a few times to find parking and was able to be seated immediately at the bar where we can see the whole kitchen and the chefs at work. This might be a good and or a bad thing. The good thing is you get to see EVERYTHING they are doing. And as that double edge sword. seeing everything might not be so good for the tummy. We noticed no gloves were worn, we noticed a lot of wiping of the counter with one hand and with the same hand we see her grab bread that was located in the corner. But hey, they are transparent in what they do so we either accept that little bit of extra or we leave! We stayed and we were throughly impressed on a few items. The fried Pancake was oh so amazingly delish. I could of licked the little thing clean. We also had about 5 or 6 cups of Lamil coffee, ya branded coffee really have a different taste and this one was yum so hard! My gfs also really enjoyed their chicken burger, she said it was the perfect amount of batter with tender and crispy meeting perfectly in the middle. Also the extra flavor of the tang really brings it out! My not so popular egg in a whole was less than satisfactory with the hard as bite of the bread and the under seasoned potatoes. My gfs grits and shrimp was also very bland … some winsome .some lose some. thats the way life goes!

Brunch. Yes. Egg-In-A-Hole…It rocks. The bread is on point. The fried chicken sandwich is one for the books. Their shrimp and grits are a force. I am a fan of this place. It’s a small, intimate restaurant /bistro that takes great care in their food. Good and enjoy.

Lovely, tasty, amazing food! Everything was awesome. Came here for dinner. They also use locally grown ingredients and tasty herbs and spices. All the meat, and fish, so tender. The profiterols for desert, were so tasty. Staff is friendly, helpful and calm, not hovering, fast and annoying like in some places. Lighting was soft, music was low and understated, but very nice. Could actually have a conversation with my dinner guest. Ambiance was quaint and understated and nice. One concern… yes you can see the cooks cooking… and eating while they cook or prepare, with their bare hands?! One did not have gloves, others did. The one that didn’t was also eating while also pulling olives apart and preparing. So… um, not sure about that part… Hope he didn’t have a cold!

4.5 stars overall Food — 5 stars Service — 4 to 5 stars Ambiance — 4 stars How have I never reviewed Canale? Love this spot! Come here for brunch right now. No really! So good! Tiny spot, so you might have to wait for a table. Very nice and knowledgeable staff and usually it’s great service. I LOVE their french toast. Like nothing you’ve ever had before and not something I can make at home. Crisp on the outside and soft and doughy inside… so so soooooo good! I also like ordering the fried chicken sandwich. The chicken is crispy and perfect on the outside(not greasy), but moist and not dry inside. The bacon is amazing, thick, delicious. Last time I was there my friend got their take on bibimbap and loved it! I’ve never been there for anything other than brunch, so can’t speak for other meals, but definitely one of my hands down fav brunch spots in LA!

I used to love this place and raved about their shrimp and grits. However this place has gone downhill lately with new chef and cooks. We waited for 45 min until asking about our order, apparently another table was ahead of us still and our server could not let us know timing. I asked for some bread while we waited and she looked confused like that was a tall request, she sent the manager over instead of just making that happen. Finally when our food arrived, it lacked salt and bread(they no longer do that, our server mentioned). Sorry, Canele, I’m going to spend my money somewhere else from now on.

Stopped by here for a quick brunch on Saturday. We got there at 10am(when they open) and we were seated immediately. We quickly ordered the Fried Chicken Sandwich and the Baked Pancake with Meyer Lemon Custard. The chicken sandwich was definitely one of the better chicken sandwiches I’ve had. The chicken was piping hot and the batter was really good. The pickled green tomatoes were new to me, and I enjoyed them thoroughly. This sandwich was simpler than others I’ve had, and I mean that in a good way. The pancake was amazing(and for $ 8, a steal). The custard wasn’t overly sweet or lemony… I could have eaten a tub of it. And the consistency of the pancake itself was like a Yorkshire pudding, which I love. This was one of those dishes that doesn’t ever need to be changed in any way. Service was okay — it seemed like everyone was still waking up and getting in the work mode. I have my eyes on some other menu items to try next time(with a side of the baked pancake).

This is one of the best restaurants I frequent. Their new lunch was good, where the rice dish really kicked butt. Their dinner is great. And I’m sure many of you have already heard about the famous brunch here. Really everything is good. The og fried chicken sandwich w green tomato is awesome! Getting it again today. But their Dutch pancake, pecan rolls, thick bacon, and especially how they do eggs at Canele are awesome. There’s really no excuse that this spot should have less than 4.5 stars on Unilocal.Except that’s how Unilocal and many reviewers on Unilocal are. They’re off.

After having Canele bookmarked for over a year, I stopped by recently for brunch. Because I’d studied the menu so well(for so long) I decided that it was really in my best interest to order 2 things for myself, both the baked pancake with meyer lemon custard and the french toast with berries and mascarpone. I honestly didn’t like the baked pancake very much, it was a little too eggy for me. The french toast was much better, but it’s so decadent and rich that I can’t imagine anyone eating the whole thing on their own. Actually, same thing goes for the baked pancake. Get one of these and share it with someone that’s ordering an egg dish! Finally, my friend ordered the pastrami hash – he did not enjoy it. Lastly, if you’re coming for brunch, try to come as early as possible – it’s a super small restaurant and they fill up fast.

Ordered three things: Fried chicken sandwich which was yum. Chicken was juicy, hot and fresh. Shrimp with cheesy grits, shrimp was salty and the dish was cold! I asked them to heat it up which they didn’t seem too happy to do it. I guess it was made and waiting for the fried chicken and got cold. –_– Baked pancake. Delicious. Kinda like a Yorkshire pudding but the texture was even better. If anything I’ll Prob just come back for the pancake.

Located in the funky, upbeat, nature-loving, almost health conscious, old-school urbaneque area of Atwater Village in Los Angeles, Canele is the neighborhood gem restaurant that roots itself with serving geniune good food. Chef Corina Weibel has a knack for seasonal food and the dishes at Canele that are absolutely outstanding. Brunch, lunch, dinner, dessert… Solid! Like 5-stars solid! This Unilocal Review is regarding the Wild menu. I’ve been on a quest to find and eat Filipino-inspired dishes this year since discovering the trend in modern Filipino food in restaurants and pop-ups. My friend Abby alerted me to Canele, where one could find a few surprise Filipino-inspired dishes. The lunch time menu is called Wild and is concocted by the chef duo/husband-wife team, Matt and Ria Wilson. Chef Ria is the creative force behind the Filipino-inspired dishes because she’s a Filipino-American. The Wild menu is a Lunch pop-up only available on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. The Filipino-inspired dish we ordered during our visit was the Abobo Braised Duck. It was outstanding. The menu has rotated many times since I last dined at Canele and I hope to return again for lunch.

Came here with high expectations based on the reviews, only to end my lunch with disappointment. I understand that restaurants don’t have to be packed all the time, since only truly amazing ones are. I ordered the fried chicken sandwich and, even though it looked appetizing at first, it was difficult to bite into. The chicken was dry and unflavored. To be fair, the first bite did not seem too bad, but, as the meal progressed, I was quickly tired of it. The two stars are for the good and friendly service. This review is solely based on the day I went(like most reviews on Unilocal). Overall, I would come back to try it again only if I were to forget this disappointing experience.

Overall, I enjoyed brunching at Canele — the two mains we ordered(soft scramble & crispy rice pork belly aka bibimbap) were good but not anything I would rave about. But their baked pancake with meyer lemon custard on the other hand… I DIED. I would like an entire one for myself please. I will probably just get this as my main next time. It was SO good. It was like a warm half baked croissant(not as crispy though but still flaky) with a gooey center. I love love love this baked pancake and would definitely recommend ordering one to share if not for yourself. I would give this dish alone 5 stars. Side note: their thick french toast looked bomb as well… I seem to prefer their sweets to savory here.

**Weekend Brunch menu different from regular, check before you waste your time coming here** Gosh, what can i say. Worst way to start my birthday celebration. I chose this place for brunch based on the amazing pictures of the baked lemon pancake. BUT I didn’t know it was only for weekend brunch. So when I arrived, I was utterly disappointed. The waiter asked if we still wanted to stay or go. He said the lunch is also very good, I had money in the meter and we were here already. Why not.(I should’ve known, it was EMPTY, sign number one) The limited lunch menu was meh. I chose the duck salad and my friend the fried chicken sandwich. WHAT A HUGEDISAPPOINTMENT. The duck salad was subpar, it was wet with a very thin dressing, plain lettuce leaves and the duck over cooked and almost dry. I was sad the entire time. The chicken sandwich was fine in the beginning when it was piping hot, after that, the bread started tasting dry and almost annoying, the chicken was edible. It lacked flavor however. The only good thing here, was the lamill coffee. I regret choosing this place for my 30th birthday lunch. I really shouldve just gone to Dune for their amazing falafel. I would not come back. Not even for weekend brunch because if they cannot get regular lunch done right, you cannot get anything right. Just like the bread theory.

Came on a Sunday afternoon for brunch, and surprisingly there wasn’t a wait. It gets pretty hot in the restaurant, not too sure if their AC was broken but it was really stuffy. They have an open kitchen which is awesome, so you get to watch them cook your food, but it definitely adds to the heat. I ordered the baked lemon pancake and my bf got the crispy rice with pork belly in a hot stone pot. The baked lemon pancake was aamaazzing. I usually don’t like lemon, but it was perfect. The pancake was filled with a lemon custard and a lemon slice. The custard was smooth, and slightly melted as you ate the pancake, since it;s served in the baking dish. The crispy rice had a great crunch to it, and the pot kept the dish nice and hot. The pork belly was served in big chunks and it was all topped off with an egg. The dish itself was a little bland, but the pork belly and crispiness of the rice made it delicious.

I had an absolutely beautiful first time experience here. I loved everything about the look and feel of the cozy little restaurant, from the communal seating areas to the rustic looking dish washer. The service was very attentive, friendly, and engaging(our waitress was fantastic with her recommendations). The food is «moderately Americanized» French, and it’s delicious. We started with the farmers market salad which was delicate, fresh, and tasty. A simple bed of leaves with an accent on raw shallots – very nice. Then came the white wine clam special which was amazing! Honestly, it’s pretty hard to mess up white wine clam but it was really special this time. The flavor was perfect, and the buttered toast was so crispy and garlicky. Finally came the lamb and sunchokes special, which was the icing on the cake. The reduction that the lamb was presented in was sooooo effing delicious! I smothered anything and everything I could get my hands on in the sauce and devoured it all. Seriously, a great sauce changes everything. The lamb itself was a B+ but the sauce lifted it to an A. Very French move to have the sauce save the dish. Overall, the food was spectacular and the restaurant itself was cozy, inviting, and comfortable. Will definitely be coming back!
