So it was going to be my first time visiting LA and I decided to do some research. I found an article about Freak City and their awesome parties, and I knew I had to check it out. Unfortunately, that same article has pushed them to refrain from hosting parties… So I was unable to revel in the magic that is Freak City. I missed the entrance because there isn’t a huge, brightly lit sign. Just a bunch of mannequins in blue and green wigs posing by a disco ball. I felt at home. I was a bit nervous to encounter whoever was behind the counter because I expected them to have a ‘holier than thou’ attitude, but that was not the case at ALL! I had the chance to meet Vally Girl(I hope I spelled it right) and Cassius, her puppy. Vally Girl was super sweet and friendly, and welcomed me to the city. Her puppy became enamored with my dog purse. Their inventory consists of thrift store items spray painted with dollar signs, or custom made apparel from LARAP! Most of it featuring cannabis leaves. I found a wicked pair of shoes that Vally Girl informed me were wanted by many, but didnt fit anyone because they are a size 6. I bought a hand made wallet that I love, and left with a yearning to someday come back and party with the crew. This place is really awesome and low key, despite their famous reputation.

I saw a peaches show here. I have to say, I’m a little biased because I work for a music venue, so seeing a venue that doubles as a store in action probably isn’t fair to compare to a venue that’s just a venue. The price for the show was totally worth it, the people who sold me the tickets were awesome and really helpful. To get in, you go through an alley that reeks of piss and then go through a confusing security routine. Depending on the time and the disposition, you either get completely searched and patted down, or have your bag sort-of glanced in. The girl in front of me wearing a dress got patted down and had her purse exhaustively searched, and I had my bag glanced at, only realizing when I got in that I had a bigass utility knife from work in my pocket, a can of pepper spray, and a firework I’d forgotten about in the back pocket of my bag. But, hey, whatever, the security staff didn’t seem to have clear instructions on what to do and how to do it, so I can’t really fault them. The room was really fun, decorated in a pleasantly psychotic manner that made walking around an adventure. The show was epic and intimate. The room got hot as sweaty balls, but that tends to happen, and I guess clothing stores don’t need air conditioning that can cool down a sweaty peaches show. The staff was great and we had a great time going there. My only complaint would be that EVERYONE around me was smoking inside, to the point that it gave me a headache, which is pretty rare. All in all, it kind of reminded me of what I liked about being 19 and out of control. Oh, also the people at the show made the name that much more appropriate. Personal favorites: Guy in alien(from the movie«Alien») costume, hipster in a dress with face painted green and RIDICULOUS moustache sticking out stiffly to either side making a huge production of looking profoundly upset the whole show, and two super fat goth ninja/pirates with random feathers and ropes tied and glued to themselves.

I’ve been to this place many a times for some really sick after-parties. I would describe the place as a cross between a boutique thrift store and a really compelling dance club. I use the word«compelling» because this place is filled with all kinds of unique items, from vintage nudie pin-up pictures, designer clothes, neon signs, and a full on photoset for taking professional pictures with your friends. And no matter where you look, it’s kind of hard not to find yourself digging around and checking out all of the little displays and hidden gems like the Art Work on the top floor. They usually open up all three floors and you can freely roam around, top to bottom, and check out all of the different vibes on each floor. Sometimes, they will have different DJ’s playing on each floor and you can pick and choose which music suits you best. The cover is never over-the-top, and you can usualyl RSVP. If you’re in the area and know of a party kicking at Freak City, it’s definitely worth checking out!

Hollywood Club/Bar dance tunes attract young Hollywood crowd. Affordable full bar, little or no cover, couches for lounging, industrial artsy downtown venue.

Freak City is a fresh(as in Fresh Prince) underground spot in the heart of Hollywood. Bring together banging music and a legit crowd and this party will go all night. And if you get there and realize your threads aren’t as fly as you’d thought, don’t start buggin’. There’s a dope vintage shop upstairs that’ll get you straight stylin’. So if you’re a Kelly Kapowski looking for her AC Slater or a Jazzy Jeff looking to get radical, Freak City is the place for you. Word.
