I’m a big proponent of understanding and giving leeway to you-get-what-you-pay-for places, but Hong Kong Express, in comparison to other locations in its class, is sub-par. I came expecting your run of the mill«Chinatown Express» quality — maybe even a bit better — since it seemed more authentic, but I was greatly disappointed. Simply put, the food was bland and greasy. While I’m actually a fan of greasy, that paired with lack of flavor and poor cooking made it very unpleasant. The rice was overcooked and clumpy, the noodles lacked flavor, and both seemed like they had been refrigerated overnight and brought back into the warmers. Other reviewers complained about the service, but I feel that it really isn’t a factor with these point-and-choose/pay-before-you-eat style places. What I will touch upon, is the condition of the place. Again, I’m really forgiving when it comes to these types of places, but better lighting and spending time doing more thorough cleaning instead of watching TV when there aren’t active customers is a better use of time, in my opinion. Anyway, I recommend going to Chinatown Express on Figueroa as an alternative as it’s equally priced for better quality food, or just avoiding this place altogether.

Food wasn’t anything special. Definitely on the cheaper side. Probably won’t come back here as there are better local alternatives.

Never order from here… Read the reviews before you think about ordering from Hong Kong express. There customer service is UNACCEPTABLE !!! They deliver the wrong order on top of being late. Gave me a hard time on there mistake. At the end they never completed my order right. Took my money and ran… No one should never feel like this.

I went there in total over 15 times probably. The food was average, the service was not very attentive. Why am i giving this place a 4 star rating then? They offer average food for awesome prices! i’ve never eaten so much with spending so little money. I never spent more than $ 7 there and was always very full afterwards!

This place is terrible. The beef tasted like rubber and the sweet and sour soup had bone chips in it. This is like your typical cheap, strip mall Chinese place that cuts corners on everything.

Quick delivery and big soup portions for a sick day. Greasy chinese food at its best.

Just came back home with take out from this place. What a waste of money! I got a combo with 3 items. The Indian guy who was serving the food gave such a small portions especially of noodles. What is up with that??? and what supposed to be tofu and eggplant is actually only eggplants, he didn’t put even one piece of tofu! WTF!!!Avoid this place. Better to go to Panda Express, at least you know what to expect there.

So unfortunately, this place is still at 1 star in my book. My orange chicken was a soggy/chewy mess, and my fried rice tasted like it had been sitting in a buffet line for 6 hours. HOWEVER, I ordered the food through GrubHub, and they felt so bad that the delivery took so long that they refunded my money! Wooohooo! So it was $ 20 that I got back. This is what Unilocal/customer feedback is all about. So happy to be apart of a generation that is concerned with value in all walks of life.

The food is tasty and quality is average. For the to-go and inside they give you the food in same package. They have free refill for soda.

Great Chinese food! Hit the spot. Orange chicken, shrimp chow mein and Mongolian beef were delicious! The pot stickers were missing the sauce, which seems to be common among reviews that I’ve read. I’ll order delivery from here again sans the stickers ;)

Paid for BBQ pork and received something else. Asked for soy sauce and received packets of plum sauce I didn’t ask for. I would understand if this occurred once… Accidents happen, but similar things have happened the past few times I’ve ordered here. Their food is nothing spectacular to begin with and the bad service just makes it worse. I’ll be taking my business elsewhere and eating what I actually want and pay for.

I’ve been coming to this place for about 9 months now and usually I’m very satisfied, however we bought the sesame something with chicken beef and shrimp and orange chicken. The sesame stiffed looked just like the orange chicken and was twice as sweet. They also raised the price which I didn’t find out till I got the new menu. Extremely disappointing to us. Must bE a new cook. Either way we won’t be going back.

Ordered delivery via Eat24… it was OK. Nothing special. The pot stickers came without sauce… Now come on, we all know that the best thing about pot stickers is the delicious garlicky, gingery, vinegary sauce! Very disappointing. And the pot stickers tasted a little«medicinal»… not that great. And need sauce! The egg roll tasted pretty clearly of the deep freezer and was uninspired. Wouldn’t order again. My Ma-Po Bean curd on the other hand was tasty, pleasantly spicy and served sans meat(most versions have ground pork or chicken). It also came with a smallish portion of white rice. The tofu dish was by far the best thing I ordered. Probably wouldn’t order from Hong Kong Express again, just because there are so many other places I want to try. But you could do worse. Oh, and the delivery came with a $ 5.00 off coupon for my «next» order… y’all know how I love my coupons!

I like this place a lot, and I do wish that I lived in California so I could visit regularly. While my parents were eating at the Fat Burger next door, I decided to do things my way and get something vegetarian. I got their chow mein, and it was absolutely delicious. It wasn’t burnt or crispy like most chow mein is, or at least it is here in Utah. The sauce was perfect and the veggies were actually edible. That means a lot coming from me, because I am a vegetarian who has a deep hatred for vegetables. The service was friendly as well, which is always appreciated when I am in California! The place seemed kind of dead when I was in there, which was around a dinner rush. I do hope that they are able to stay in business. If I am ever back in California(which is almost guaranteed) I will make sure to stop back in!

Ive been craving for some authentic chinese food my entire trip and I finally found it! Prices are great and portions are huge. Their meat balls are ridiculously good! Must try! It gets really busy during dinner hours but definitely worth waiting for!

i guess i should have read all the other 1 star reviews before i ordered. i got delivery because it was a decent price and they had lots of choices. the delivery got here really fast. but. the food was SO bad. the orange chicken and chicken teriyaki tasted really old and had such a bad flavor. the egg roll was dripping with grease and had no taste to it. my boyfriend got a kind of beef but it didn’t look or taste like beef. no. just no.

Stay away. This place for one has a B rating and 2) the food is horrible. I got the teriyaki chicken and pork something. It was straight grease and fat. Stay away!

Found the food clean, seasoned nicely and workers friendly. Stopped in here for dinner while staying at the Days Inn a block away. My 3 star rating is more like a 3+, for it’s location too.

Hong Kong Express believes in quick courtship. Get ready to fall, hard. This restaurant isn’t a former British colony, but it IS practically an island in the street, because it’s so hard to reach! And, like the real Hong Kong, your motor scooter will get stolen faster than the candy in a «take just one» bowl on an empty porch Halloween night, if you don’t lock it up. HK Express, located at the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Highland Avenue(fender-bender central!), has the misfortune to share strip[per] mall space with a Greek fast food restaurant and Italian pizzeria. Decisions, decisions! If you’ve got a twenty dollar bill(thanks, random laundry pants money!) burning a hole in your pocket, your tummy can take a budget cruise from the Mediterranean to Asia, and still have enough change left to buy one or two American postage stamps from the box/ship store next door. You’re so intercontinental! – Anyway, to earn your lunch hour dollars over its olive-skinned rivals, Hong Kong Express has some tasty tricks up its Eastern sleeve. Or rather, behind its sneeze guard. Again, like the real Hong Kong, the restaurant gets really crowded at noon and around 3:30pm(when Hollywood High School lets out for the day), so unless you’re walking, expect to get frustrated trying to find a parking space. The wait’s worth it, though(but is the WEIGHT worth it? I’ll get back to you :-P). If you’ve ever been to the often-reprehensible Panda Express(no relation to the family-owned Honk Kong Express), you’ll already know the fare that’s to be expected at a quick-serve Chinese food eatery. The choices at HK Express are generally similar(orange chicken, mushroom chicken, kung pao this-and-that, BBQ pork, etc.), but this restaurant sets itself apart with better, friendlier service, and ingredients that — from bite number one until bite number DONE — are obviously fresher and of higher quality. Portion sizes are huge, prices small — the perfect dynamic for the coin-conscious consumer, but how does this wonderful place stay in business? Oh yes — because they’re wonderful! And the crowd knows it, honey. You can get a 1-item plate(and you know how that goes — pick an entrée, and get fried rice and chow-mein) for $ 5.99, a 2-item plate for $ 6.99, and a 3-item plate(I like to call it the Calorie Carnival!) for only $ 7.50. The rice — both fried and steamed variety — isn’t at all distinctive, but the chow mein is made with thicker noodles than Chinese restaurants usually use, and is 360 degrees of mmmm… Unlike many Chinese fast-food joints, HK Express has HUGE, sit-down restaurant style bowls of wonton soup on offer — steaming hot, big enough for two people, and only $ 5.50! *Win* Even if you come only for the soup — your long argument in the parking lot with the van that double-parked, and being chased by a drunk wino who isn’t asking for change but wants to tell you about the government putting a chip in his brain — will be worth it. Got $ 10? Visit Hong Kong! It’s in Hollywood. (across the street from Carl’s Jr. — no passport necessary, love)
