The artist reception held at Chop Chop Salon/Gallery this past June 28th was the most fun I’ve had at an art party since the MOCA’s Collecting Collections exhibit back in February. That’s saying a lot since the artworks at the MOCA were a collection of timeless masterpieces and was comprised of an enormous array of various works from true Art Stars. Now, this particular art party at Chop Chop was nowhere near the size of the party at MOCA, nor did it have any«classic» pieces. You may be scratching your head then, wondering why there is even a comparison of the two. Allow me to explain. A sheer nobody, in art standards, manages to emerge seemingly out of nowhere with art pieces like nothing I have seen anyone else try to do. In fact, everyone I know who has witnessed these vinyl creations first hand is dolled over in perplexed admiration for his meticulous, colorful pop-art like pieces. The artist had 14 or so one-of-a kind pieces on site from his collection. Every piece had varying degrees of layering. Most were hand-made, hand-cut or computer cut, spray-painted, hand painted or drawn, or all of the above. Who would think to make original artworks from the stuff that sign shops use to make, well, signs?! Someone needs to keep an eye on this Jorge Oswaldo guy. For those who attended, this bump’in art party at Chop Chop, got a lucky first look at a true Art Star in the making… I suggest you check him out so you can at least say you knew who he was… before you have to pay the MOCA to see him. The show runs from May 11-July 12

I attended the opening of Salvadorean artist Jorge Oswaldo’s show entitled Formations at Chop Chop Salon and Gallery where numerous pieces of Jorge’s works were on display. Jorge works with vinyl and his pop art is vibrant and full of life. One can immediately spot the influence Murakami had on him. The artist himself is an interesting and vivacious young man who is friendly and open about his love of his craft. He stood with us for a long time answering our questions and explaining to us how he created each piece from start to finish. My favorite piece was naturally the most expensive piece retailing for $ 4000. Oh well. Check out his website or stop by the salon and see the works yourself.
