Once a year sometime in October, Mutual Trading Company sponsors a Japanese Food & Restaurant Expo where different food & Sake(sah keh) vendors are invited to show, demonstrate their restaurant related products as well as giving out different samples of food & Sake for the restaurant trade. This event is not open to the general public, but only open to restaurant owners & their associated employees. Chefs’ knives, food products to enhance & stream line restaurant food production, freezers, refrigerator units that chill Sashimi & Sushi display cases, fish venders giving out samples of Maguro & Hamachi, there is a plethora of products catering to the Japanese restaurant trade. For many years, this trade show was on the grounds of Mutual Trading Company’s warehouse & office on Crocker in downtown Los Angeles, but in the last two years, the Japanese Food & Restaurant Expo has been at the Pasadena Convention Center on Green Street. I was impressed with the number & quality of Sake vendors bring with them samples of Sake, Plum Wine, Sparkling Sake(The new darling of novelty in the Sake world). Representatives were from Dassai, Kubota, Born to name a few of the premier Sake producers as well as other extremely competent but less well known Sake brewers. These representatives know their Sake, so they are capable of answering technical and culinary related topics relative to the restaurant perspective. This is a must for the owners of Japanese Restaurants & their employees since it allows them to keep au currant on different aspects of Japanese food technology & restaurant associated products & equipment.

Can’t say there’s much of a problem with this place. Came with my boss to pick something up. For everything Japanese that can be found in a restaurant, they have everything. Only complaint was the guy in the front desk who was in charge of taking and verifying orders for sale. Very old man. Seems nice, but I think age has slowed. down his reaction. A few customers ahead had to repeat what they wanted many times. At least once he figured out what was. needed, he finished the job up pretty quickly.

If you live in Southern California and you ever wondered where your sushi chef gets his supplies, the answer is most likely from Mutual Trading Company. Need a sushi knife? Need to get your knife sharpened? Need 50 bento boxes? Everything a sushi restaurant could possibly need is here. This is a wholesale shop so be prepared if you are buying for yourself. The area where the shop is located is completely surrounded by a bad neighborhood so don’t be surprised by the number of bums and homeless.
