I purchased a Groupon for a one year membership. I had trouble redeeming the Groupon and went to the museum, but was given the incorrect type of membership card. By the time I finally got the cards and a letter from the new membership person, the museum was mainly selling Christmas presents in preparation for closing and moving. Once moved, I heard nothing more and it seems that it is no longer in Santa Monica and no longer functions as a museum. Google lists it as permanently closed. So, they sold one year memberships that lasted less than weeks, but never gave members notice or options.

I went to the museum in 2014 since I was under the impression that this was some kind of museum of modern art. Unfortunately, this is not a museum, more like an art store for emerging artists. The museum is composed of several small buildings, that are basically several little stores. In every building, you will find a different artist/merchant that will present you his work and will try to get you to buy it. There are no actual exhibitions, just small artists presenting their work. Access to this museum is free and some artists present quite interesting work. Most of it is very modern art. The museum offers a free parking lot to everyone. Overall, my experience with the Santa Monica Museum of Art was disappointing and I would not recommend it.
