AUTHENTIC, AFFORDABLE, FRESH, BUTTERY. I ordered my usual go-to nigiri: saba, hamachi, unagi, uni, hotate, sake. All of it was on point! The hotate(jumbo scallop) came with a bit of yuzu paste which I love, but my bf thought it was a bit overpowering. We also ordered the white tuna steak appetizer because the table next to us had it and we overheard them saying it was the best thing they’ve had. Honestly it was too salty, but thumbs up on the garlic. Also, props for presentation. It was served on top of a hot stone plate so it cooked as it was served. It was really low key and quiet in there, but I liked the ambiance. They were playing a silent Kurasawa movie projected on one of the walls which was really cool. Our server was great. I will definitely visit again!

My absolute favorite sushi spot in LA! This place is great, good quality fish, with traditional — unique sushi dishes. They play awesome old kung fu movies in the main room, and have good service. The hamapeño is a must try!

I would describe it as a special Japanese microcosm in Hollywood. Walk inside from under the lit-up Billboard chaos on Highland and find a soft, relaxing atmosphere with old Japanese films playing on the back wall. The soothing material textures and sound design made me feel as though I was in a spa rather than a sushi restaurant. On that note, the sushi here is excellent. I had yellowtail, spicy tuna and ell, all of which were on point. Spicy Tuna on crispy rice is interesting. Service is relaxed and good. Nice seaweed salad. Nice green tea. Delicious green tea tempura ice cream. I think it’s good for the price and location.

Hi, you have a PARKINGLOT — thats an automatic YAY for me(especially in the area). Came with friends on a Friday night, got seated pretty quickly. Ordered a few standard items. Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice — crispy rice a little over crispy, aka scratching the hell out of my mouth. Albacore with Crispy Onion– delicious, highly recommended. Good quality fish, very nice accouterments. Crunch Roll — standard, pretty tasty(hard to go wrong with deep fried bits all over a saucy roll) Spicy Yellowtail — not that spicy. All in all, mixed review. I would stick with the standard fish items, and leave the deep fried stuff to more americanized restaurants(normally a good thing, right?). Service was very friendly but also very quick to turn our table over.

I keep trying different sushi spots around Los Angeles but have yet to find any place that tops Shintaro when it comes to quality of fish. It’s just the best tasting sushi there is in town and it’s in a freaking strip mall for crying out loud!

Good sushi spot, with friendly staff, decent nigiri and sashimi. I have eaten sushi all over the word and am quite picky when it comes to the quality of fish, cuts of fish, and preparation. I have had much better, but generally far far worse. No high end choices of toro here. All in all well prepared fresh fish. For two is can easily run over $ 100 with sake. Sake selection is adequate for most people, nothing special in my book.

I think this is one of the best sushi places in LA. I know, that’s a pretty bold statement but they fish is also very fresh and their sushi chefs have an amazing arsenal of favorites. If Bobby is working, ask him to recommend something for you. As far as entrees go, I love the black cod and the Hamapeno, soft shell crab. Excellent food, GREAT service and a very cool ambiance. They even have old school Japanese movies projected on the wall of the dining room. You may also have a celebrity sighting there, as it’s known hangout for a few movie stars.

My crew came here before a show at the Hollywood Bowl, the proximity is perfect for a before show dinner. I found the positive reviews to be spot on. FRESH, FRESH sushi with friendly service. You can make a reservation, which you should do, especially if something is going on at the Hollywood Bowl. We had an assortment of stuff, all super fresh! Rainbow roll — A grade Spicy Tuna on Crispy Rice — A grade I can’t recall all the other items we had, the hot saki and cold beer seem to have dulled my senses, plus I’m writing this the day after dinner and the show, so I’m still in a post concert fog. Bottom line, I would not hesitate to come again. I left well ‘hydrated,’ and with a full stomach, and the cost was $ 86 per couple.

While the location is difficult to get to by car, this place is well worth the drive! We have tried so many sushi restaurants, including 5 star dinning to the random hole-in-the-wall, and Shintaro has some of the best fish around. If you are a true sushi connoisseur, and care more about the quality of the fish rather than flashy fried/mayonnaise rolls, than this is the place for you. Very traditional, keeping it simple, and making it about the fish. Wish I could afford to eat here everyday! Plus the staff is terrific! And if you actually read the negative reviews, it’s because those people want flashy rolls at rock-bottom prices. This is a simple establishment, with excellent sushi at expected prices. This is not Crazy Rock’n Sushi with deep-fried california rolls or happy-hours.

We wanted to grab a quick bite before we headed to the Hollywood Bowl. My reason for 2 stars because the location is perfect to walk to the Hollywood Bowl… And that’s about it! I found this place on Unilocal.I don’t understand the 4 stars but it fooled me! The restaurant itself looked decent from the outside but once we stepped inside the ambience was kind of uptight. I was thinking it was a fun low key vibe pre party sushi place with variety of rolls and pictures. I was wrong. The seating and tables are close together. I felt no privacy and others sitting next to us could probably hear our conversations. Food… Gosh really, it was not good. Overpriced sushi, bad quality, and presentation of it didn’t win me over. Service… Extremely slow service. Very friendly but our server either forgot our order or the tempura rolls took forever. We waited for the Cowboy Roll and the server kept saying«5 more minutes» at least 3 times. By then we already finished 2 orders of California Rolls, another sushi order, Gyoza, and our spicy tuna salad. We cancelled that order… The server seemed irritated that we cancelled but still accommodating. I will not come back!

Oh my god steer clear Got explosive stomach cramps followed by Horrific spells of chills, sweats and vomiting from scallops Came in and ordered food to go Bc working across at bowl and oh my gosh did it ruin my day/week This place is awful — if the food poisoning I got doesn’t warn you, then you are brave — It made me put one star but deserves none

What a delight — as always. I love Shintaro, the fish quality is always superb and the chefs are very friendly. I came here with a group of friends prior to see Phantom of the Opera and had a memorable time. We ordered omakase at the sushi bar, and I wouldn’t have asked for anything more. The highlights were the yellowtail, toro, mackerel and jumbo scallop — but I think all of the fish(which we had everything) was beautifully prepared. The sushi rice is light and fragrant and isn’t overbearingly seasoned with either sugar or vinegar. It also holds together whether you eat with your hands or with chopsticks. The staff is also very attentive and polite. The great thing — NOENTREEEATERSATTHESUSHIBAR. I love this — I understand if you want to experience sitting at the sushi bar so you can watch the chefs prepare sushi for the restaurants’ patrons, but I agree with the owner and hostess that the bar is not a place for teriyaki glazed meats. In fact, I wish more sushi establishments were like this — but it’s just my opinion. Call me a sushi snob, but at $ 150−200/couple I’d like my nigiri experience not to be tainted by the odor of teriyaki anything.

This place is stunning. The drive up the hill to get there is terrifying, but so worth it. The view from the patio is breathtaking, dining room is lovely, but it’s the garden area that is my preferred seating. The entire meal with delicious from start to finish. The raspberry martini blew my mind. The sushi roll we got was fantastic. We both got saki with our steaks that were cooked to perfection. The smores brownie with cookie dough ice cream is perfection.

I had a crunchy spicy tuna roll and California roll In brief, the tuna roll tasted spongy and hardly any tuna and too much rice. it tasted like it was sitting out for days. And it was covered and Tabasco sauce instead of a mixture of spice and tuna. The so-called«crunchy» part was soggy. It was really bad. The California roll was the same as one you would get at the grocery store. It was made from cheap imitation crab meat. When I complained. the waitress did nothing except apologize which was very irritating. I had to instruct her to get the manager. The manager came to my table and when I expressed my issues, he took it off the bill– very professional and proper for him to do that– but I feel a good waitress or waiter should’ve done that and not waited until I had to ask for the manager myself. However, I did not come for the service I came for the food in which I was very disappointed – I will never come back.

Came here after work one Thursday evening with a coworker, and we were both pleasently surprised by the service and quality of sushi. Our waitress was very friendly, helpful, and made great recommendations for rolls. She was always nearby and kept our water and tea glasses full, the food came out in a timely manner, and everything was delicious. We ordered so many rolls that I can’t even remember them all now, but I do know that I personally didn’t care for the lobster roll. It’s a warm baked roll, and that’s just not my favorite type of sushi, so if you prefer cooked sushi you’ll probably love it! One thing to note: the size of the rolls was a lot bigger than we anticipated, so it’s very easy to get more food than you originally barganed for.

$ 85.02 for 8 items on a take-out call. Appears as ‘$$’ here on Unilocal.Recent price increase possibly? About the Sushi: Very average and and step above Whole Foods. Add a rude cashier with a long face /zero welcome or smile even though I smiled and was kind to her. Not a place I will visit again.
