Thai curry noodles are the best that I’ve had in LA. I am officially on a mission to find the next best thing!

Nong, the face of the restaurant, is a lovely woman who pays extra special attention to her customers and is a pleasure to come visit. Her sister, one of the wonderful chefs in the little kitchen, makes the most delicious spicy jackfruit dish that gives me cravings and keeps me going back. If you are vegetarian, ask for the jackfruit without pork, it is packed with spicy and savory flavor. They have the standard Thai fare, but try out their northern Thai specialities for something different. The vinegar drinks are also tasty and fun to try. Bring cash and an empty stomach!

Amazing little gem in the side of the neighborhood. Khao soy is amazing! The best I’ve had yet. Decided to have their bbq and boy does it not disappoint! Portion sizes are pretty huge too. Cash only!

This is the best place for northern Thai cuisine. We love Sai Oua here though it is very spicy. We have to eat a small piece of Sai Oua with a lot of sticky rice. Khao Soi is good. Kanom Jean Nam Ngiew is ok. It is missing some aromatic smell of herbs. Kang Hunglay is flavorful. Jackfruit salad is a bit weird to me but it could be me trying this dish for the first time. Since I don’t live in LA, I usually order food from here and bring it back home with me. Their broth is very rich. I usually save the remaining broth and add meat /noodle to it. There’s another delicious meal for me.

What a great find this was! I was brought to this place on the Urban Adventures Ethnic Food Tour and will definitely be going back. First of all, the woman who runs the restaurant is super sweet and generous(we saw her giving a plate of food to a homeless man for taking out her trash). The egg noodle soup we had here was comfort food to the max and it was the perfect mix of spicy and creamy from the spices and coconut cream! I want some more! The restaurant itself is small, but has about 5 – 6 tables that can seat four people, so it works. It’s in a strip mall with a parking lot, so you don’t have to worry about finding street parking.

It’s a bit pricey for what it is but the food is decent. Went here on new year’s eve and got Pad se ew, which was cooked perfectly. My boyfriend got the bbq chicken, which was also very delicious. I’ll be back.

The spicy jackfruit here is bomb. Make sure you above all get that. The khao soi is pretty legit too. I was eating here with some veg friends though and our veggie curry definitely had a lot of little shredded bits of beef here so be careful if you have dietary restrictions.

Yes still the best and thankfully resisting change. The jackfruit dish is still my all-time favorite Thai dish anywhere. Every Los Angeles Thai standard is dine better here. In LA you can get nicer dining rooms, liquor licenses, and better parking at other Thai restaurants, but you will not find better Thai food.

maybe we ordered the wrong things, but i just returned from chiang mai a few weeks ago and was craving a good bowl of khai soi. the soup was great, the noodles were wayyyy too soft. I like noodles with a little bounce in them and these just kind of died off when I bit into them –_-. anyhow, we also ordered some weird dipping thing with vegetables which was probably the worst thing ive eaten in LA, considering it costed 9 dollars or so. It was like a spicy green salsa. Their bbq pork was quite good, not worth the 12 dollars though. and lastly, we ordered ground pork cakes which i’d say were average about 3⁄5.

I consider this as the first of several visits and this review is only for the Khai Soi and the Thai tea. The Khai Soi had an incredibly delicious, rich, and well-balanced base. The texture of the noodles was great, too. But the chicken was too cooked and hard. The Thai tea was spot on — liked it very much. A nice lady serves you at this small family restaurant. Excellent service. I’ll be returning for the bbq pork and the other northern Thailand delicacies.

My stomach ached. I rode the train. I battled the heat. I eventually made it to Spicy BBQ. My expectations, based on stories I had heard, were very high. Normally that leads to disappointment. Spicy BBQ is an exception. The atmosphere is great, the price is reasonable and, most importantly, the food is next level! I wish Unilocal allowed us more than five stars!

Straight outta Chiang Mai, kid. The décor is exactly what a Thai grandma’s house would look like. And the cooking, grandma’s steez too. If there was a couch, it’d be wrapped up in plastic. Every dish is as authentic as I’ve had from Thailand. My suggestions: –Spicy Thai sausage –Spicy ground pork paste –Spicy BBQ pork — A++ –Sticky rice(duh) –Spicy jackfruit(still scratching my head over this one, mad complex dish) The egg rolls were nothing special, but were nice to have with the meal. As indicated by my recommendations, they’re not shy with the spice. Your butthole will be ringing the next day. Cash only.

We returned here for dinner the other night and it’s still a favorite! This time we tried the spicy jackfruit and also ordered the khao soi again. The jackfruit had a sour and spicy taste to it and it was mixed with scallions. Both of us enjoyed the meaty texture of the jackfruit. The kha soi broth is still amazing! It’s creamy, with the flavor of coconut, and also a bit spicy. My only wish is that there were actually less noodles and more broth, because the broth is so delicious.

We ordered egg rolls, Teriyaki Chicken, Thai Sausage, Pork Spicy Barbeque, Chicken Spicy Fried Rice, and Spicy Jackfruit. It was all amazing! The sauce with the egg rolls was delicious and they had a unique texture compared to other egg rolls I’ve had(more moist) but they were really good and a fantastic starter. My favorite of our dishes were the jackfruit and the chicken spicy fried rice. I was honestly happy with all of the food, but if you don’t have an option to share, the jackfruit or chicken spicy fried rice are winners! While the spicy sausage was good, it is a good meal to split rather than eat on its own as it is JUST meat! Lastly, the Thai iced tea is REALLY good! It helps cut all the spice from the spicy meals:)

Totally a hole in the wall place. The whole place only has 6 tables. Very tiny. Food is very flavorful. Spicy and big portion. Jackfruit stir fry– spicy, sour with a burst of bold flavors. I didn’t know if I was eating fruit or the meat. Pretty good. Ground meat with red paste, with veggies. I really liked it. Very good. Distinct flavor. Dip your cold veggies in the warm meat paste. Curry egg noodle-has flat noodles, fermented bits of veggies, fried crispy bits and chicken. Good curry base. Spicy.

The Thai Tea was pretty on point here; comes with a fancy straw flower top too. And I like the crushed ice they use for the drink. As for the food, everything was good, but I don’t feel as though I would crave and/or care to return for any of the dishes that we ordered. We split the northern style egg noodle soup, the bbq pork, and the bbq beef. Pork was easily better than the beef. The noodles were okay, not very spicy as I had requested. Excellent service here. The restaurant is a little small, and pretty hot inside, but it gives you a nice feel, as though you’re actually in Thailand, haha.

I was turned on to Spicy BBQ or as the sign outside the restaurant reads«Spicy &BBQ» by the 5everyday app. If you are reading this post and do not have the 5everyday app on your iphone or Android device, then please close this review and download the app! A husband and wife team post 5 great things to do in LA everyday. This week they suggested Spicy BBQ as an alternative to Jitlada that does not require a 45 minute wait. However my experience at Spicy BBQ showed me that this Northern Thai restaurant is a destination in its own right. I spoke with the women serving us to find out specifically where she and her family are from in Thailand and found out she’s from Chiangmai which is my favorite city in the country. This explains why they have a wide selection of northern Thai dishes in the back of the menu, including a khao soi better than the bowls I had in Chiangmai itself. We ordered the khao soi or curry and egg noodles and a plate do spicy BBQ pork ribs. The flavors were AMAZING. I thought I loved Night+Market, but given a choice I’d choose to have a meal at Spicy BBQ instead. The dining room is extremely modest and small. If people realized just how good the food was here then there’d quickly be 45 minute or longer waits. Expect to immediately sit down unless the word gets out.

4.5 stars on Unilocal means ridiculously good. This is why I drove 25 minutes to all the way to Thai town on a Saturday night to try this place. Surprisingly, there was no wait and plenty of parking in the small plaza lot. It’s free, although there’s a sign saying there’s a fee. To say this place is tiny is an understatement. There are 44-seater tables and 22-seaters. The place is kind of a trip. There are abundant flora in there, including dollar bills hanging from a small indoor plant. In addition, there are some cool Thai decorations on the wall. In essence, this is very simply decorated. Great place to grab a bite with friends. Not a great place for a date — you’ve been warned. 1. Thai Iced Tea($ 1.75): Very well priced! Great flavor. It’s sweet, but definitely not the sweetest I’ve tasted. You can still taste the tea. 2. Pork BBQ: This dish is decent. The pork is still tender and has a tinge of sweetness, which is not everyone’s cup of tea. I found that it tastes good with the bed of lettuce under it, dipped into the sauce. Large portion. 3. Jack Fruit dish: I really enjoyed this. There are many interesting textures here, including a nice crunch to some element of the dish that I couldn’t identify. There was pork and Jack fruit and a few other things. In any case, it’s a bit salty, and worked really well with the sticky rice I ordered to complement this dish. I felt that the pricing was slightly above average for a Thai place, but the food is solid here. It didn’t blow me away, but I left feeling satisfied. Great service. Family owned. CASHONLY(there is an ATM in the restaurant).

Spicy BBQ Restaurant a small family-owned Thai restaurant that specializes in Northern Thai cuisine. Northern Thai cuisine is a bit different than Northeastern Thai(Issan) cuisine. Northeastern Thai cuisine includes dishes like larb, grilled chicken, nam tok, and papaya salad. Northern Thai cuisine includes spicy curries(khao soi, kaeng hang-le, kaeng khae, kaeng khanun, namphrik. etc). Both regions have sticky rice(the ones where you roll into a ball) as the staple food. Northern Thai cuisine is a bit more rare to find. Most Thai restaurants seem to specialize in Central Thai cuisine(pad thai, pad see ew, tom yum, tom kha gai, yellow curry, green curry, matsaman, etc.) Underneath the Thai Food Spicy BBQ sign is the name of the restaurant written in Thai. It’s Koon Nong Chao Nuer which translates to «Koon Nong from the north.» Nong would be the woman’s name, which is the owner. The restaurant only has six tables. There’s still enough space where you’re not crammed with other tables. The tables are glass covered and underneath the glass are Thailand photos or newspaper articles raving about the restaurant. There’s also Thai art on the walls. Their menu has appetizers, soups, salads, BBQ, stir-fried meat and vegetables, fried rice, noodles, Northern Thai cuisine dishes, lunch specials, dinner specials, and Nong’s special dishes. What I’ve tried here so far: *Khao Soi — curried noodle soup enriched with coconut milk. The curry was incredibly rich in flavor. There was more curry flavor than coconut, thus making the curry a bit more thicker in consistency which I thought was good. I would’ve liked it more if the noodles were a bit softer in texture. The chicken was super tender which soaked up all the curry flavor. This dish comes in medium spicy as the default and they can’t alter it because that’s just how the curry flavor was made. *Thai style BBQ pork — The BBQ pork is cut into strips. And OMG this is so tender and flavorful! I wanted to cry. It was soo amazingly delicious! I’ve never had anything that was like this before. Highly recommended! *Sticky rice — Soft and sticky and compliments well with any dish here. It also has a nice aroma to it. *Khanom Chin Nam Ngiao — This is fermented rice noodles served with pork blood tofu in a sauce made with pork broth and tomato, crushed fried dry chilies, pork blood, dry fermented soy bean, and dried red kapok flowers. I tried it and it tasted like a spicy tomato soup with bits of beef. The strong spiciness was so bold that it hit the entire back of my throat that I couldn’t handle anymore of it. Really good though! The service was good. The servers were incredibly soft-spoken. They were friendly, asked us how the food was, and packed up our leftovers to-go when we were finished. Parking is completely hideous. Loose gravel all over the place with narrow parking spots. We managed to find parking but because every car overlapped their lanes, we had to do the same. If I’ve learned anything, it so happens that the best Thai restaurants usually have terrible parking. Overall, this is a great place for authentic Northern Thai cuisine! It’s a bit different than what I’m used to with the Central, Northeast, and Southern Thai dishes. Highly recommended!
