Taking the Reins is a place where girls can learn to ride and garden in a safe friendly educational environment. They teach primarily underprivileged middle and high-​school girls horse care and riding and urban farming. I have seen girls from extremely tough home situations turn their lives around and pursue their dreams after enrolling at taking the reins. Most of the girls pay little or nothing to attend. They also work with schools in the area to teach seed to table skills. Overall it’s one of those hidden gems that really makes a difference in the lives of the kids they serve.

Taking the Reins is an amazing and little-​known non-​profit in the Atwater village area that does tremendous good. The program helping under served girls in the Los Angeles area develops confidence and leadership skills. The riding program is amazing and the results are visible through the smiles and skills developed by the girls. They also have an organic farm, a writing program, and a photography program.
