Great place to get small quantities of obscure spices. Looking around, I couldn’t help but wonder when was the last time some of these mason jars/containers were washed. :) Evokes thoughts of what an old apothecary must have been like. The guy at the counter(owner?) was quick to assist and quick to let you know that it is NOT self serve. Credit cards are accepted for totals of $ 6 and over only. Kind of a neat place if you’re the sort willing to take a walk on the dubious side when it comes to what you put in your mouth.

I met the owner of the store, while walking along Barret street earlier this week. He was incredibly easy-going and kind to talk to about Germantown neighborhood. As soon as a client came in, he was quick to help and ready to make their order a reality. The store had everything from chocolate covered espresso beans to coffee to spices to cranberries and candy. The owner informed me that they often have pretzel bread as well, that is amazing. I am looking forward to coming in for the pretzel bread soon, since I am in the area now. I was really satsified with my bag of cranberries, cornbread mix(made flavorful muffins), and chocolate covered espresso beans. The owner’s promptness was really amazing and of course the bread will need to be discovered!

I have mixed feelings about this place. Yes, they have tons of spices, candies, grains, coffees, teas. You can purchase any quantity you want, which can be especially nice if you need an exotic spice for a certain dish. The prices are good. On the downside, sometimes the stock is not so fresh. I once purchased two pounds of pine nuts for pesto — these are not cheap. I asked to taste a few first to see if they were fresh. The owner acted as if I slapped him in the face! He gave me ONE to taste, and it was not bad. I bought the nuts, but was turned off by his attitude. More recently I went in with a $ 20 gift certificate from a friend that had expired four months previous. He flatly refused to honor it. I asked if he would take 50 cents on the dollar. Nope. Store always seems a bit dirty… who puts carpet on the floor of a foodstuffs shop? Sooooo. They have a great selection of common AND unusual spices and etc. But, their customer service leaves me wanting more. I’m giving them three stars because I don’t want to be mean, but, between the attitude and the sometimes not fresh merchandise, I want to give them two.

It’s a great concept however the tea and spices i have purchased have consistently been aged and weak. The one employee I have worked with seemed agitated and in a hurry to get me out, never though it was the middle of the day and I was the only customer. Disappointing

I love trying out new recipes and this place has the most unique ingredients I’ve ever found. I am usually on sensory overload when I walk in because they have nuts, candy, tea, and baking supplies in bulk=my heaven! The owner is very nice and has offered to order any items that weren’t in stock. He is knowledgeable about a lot of baker’s needs and can explain everything they have in the store. I don’t think I’m ever going to use all the products in the shop, but I can try!

So it’s kinda reminiscent of a candy store because everything is in these candy jar type containers and that means I just wanna start grabbing stuff… But don’t do that. It’s not self-serve, as I was informed after the guy working saw my hands start to follow my eyes. I came in for peanut butter, which was freshly ground up right there in a machine(also not for touching) and ending up leaving with sun dried tomatoes, dried cranberries, …and the best purchase: 3 mini pretzel bread croissant rolls made by this guy: whose for real wonder bread is served up at Hammerheads, Holy Grale, and more. And all for only $ 10!

Nut’s N’ Stuff is the best bulk food place in town. For those who enjoy cooking and experimenting with new recipes you can buy a pinch or a pound of an ingredient. Owned by Paul Pfister, their product line ranges from flours, coffees, teas, a wide variety of seasonings and spices, as well as a baker’s dream. Nut’s N’ Stuff is moving to 1000 Barett Avenue at the end of March in the Original Highlands. Looking forward to having them in our neighborhood.

A self-explanatory name for a business that is special in the Louisville market.
