I took my family out for lunch after catching an early movie showing. My wife suggested Steak ‘n Shake as she had not been in some time and I had been to another location recently while at a training event. The location was busy but we were seated quickly and also waited on very quickly. That was the end of the good portion of our visit to Steak ‘n Shake on Outer Loop. One server passed by our table and said she’d be right with us after checking with one of her other tables. No problem, we knew they were busy and she was polite, courteous, and respectful to us and we felt she was doing her best. Then another server came up and asked if anyone had taken our order yet. We said no and she offered to get our drink order and, if we were ready, to take our food order. So far, so good. Then my wife had a question about a side-by-side shake. The server VERY quickly responded with, «We don’t have any shakes today. We are short staffed and we don’t have a milkshake maker so we don’t have any shakes today.» At first, we were just disappointed. We ordered our food and drinks and the drinks came to our table shortly thereafter. However, the longer we sat at the table, the more upset I became. I was in retail management for 15 years. Why in the world would there be only one person on the staff that can make milkshakes? Then, we struck up a conversation with a family sitting next to us. They had overheard a bit of our conversation with the server and said they had waited almost an hour for their food. Had they not been waiting for a prescription to be filled at the nearby Kroger pharmacy, they would not have waited. They told us to be prepared for a long wait. We mentioned being bummed about not being able to get a shake and they seemed shocked. They said they had ordered a shake for their child with no problem. But, they also said they had made a complaint to someone about the restaurant. Also, they said that the person that they talked to initially was not the manager and they had to demand to speak with a manager several times before actually talking with one. At this point, I had had my fill and went up to the front to find a manager. After waiting for a few minutes at the bar, I moved near the server area where they entered orders and picked up orders. After being ignored for a few more minutes by at least servers, I stepped into the server area and demanded to speak to a manager. About the time I did that, I saw another server taking a milkshake to a table. Imagine my surprise when I see a milkshake being served after being told that shakes were not available today. Now, I had gone from being slightly miffed to highly annoyed to flat out angry. I asked again to speak to a manager and a server called back to the cook’s area. A lady stuck her head out of the order delivery area and indicated that she was the manager. I told her I needed to speak with her immediately. She looked at me and said, «I’m making food for other customers. I’ll be with you in a few minutes.» Now, angry was not the word I would use to describe my mood. Furious is how I would describe my mood. I admit, by now I was being a jerk. However, the staff at this restaurant had been incredibly rude, inattentive, and had LIED to me and my family. I demanded the manager step out and speak with me. She came out and I said, «So, the name of this restaurant is Steak AND shake and today my family can’t get a shake, but others can?» She asked, «Did someone refuse to get you a shake?» I said yes and the server that had taken our order happened to be standing nearby. She proceeded to tell a tale that would try to make her sound like a champion of customer service instead of a liar. She said that she was having difficulty keeping up with her orders and customers so told us that there were no shakes today. She said that if we ordered a shake that we should get that shake quickly and she knew we weren’t going to so she just said that no shakes were available. The manager asked what kind of shake we would like several times. I said told her that I wasn’t even sure as I was so upset and honestly couldn’t remember. However, it wasn’t about getting a free shake which is what I’m sure the manager was going to offer. It was, and is, about how we were treated by this server AND the manager. The server was only concerned about trying to make herself look good in front of the manager and the manager couldn’t care less about how her staff were treating customers, she just wanted to get food out and get people out of the restaurant. I walked away and went back to our table, apologized to my 4-year old daughter that she couldn’t have a milkshake and she would have to leave her fruit punch behind because we were leaving. I will never enter this or any other Steak ‘n Shake ever again. I will, however, contact each and every person that is in some position of authority over this particular location and share this review directly with them. Disgusting.

Do not waste your time stopping here! My wife and stopped by Sunday night around 9:00 pm, we pull in behind 2 cars In the drive threw and a few more people were inside. We sat for 10 mins at the speaker before anyone would take our order. You could here them inside just joking and carrying on. After we order and wait more we pull to the window to find the place a mess. It appeared there wasn’t a manager near the store let alone in the store. We were very shocked when we saw the manager come by the window and she was most definitely the problem. She did not care what was going on. The cashier walked away from the window with my card for a while. Then thw cook was picking up trash with the same gloves on that she was using to handle the food. We all know fast food is crap but this is the worst ran restaurant I’ve ever been to in my life.

I had the worse taco salad anyone could imagine! It was my fault for ordering a salad at a burger joint. Never again The server was new(first day on the job) and she became upset and didn’t know what to do when I sent back the first one because the lettuce was bad. So trainer looked at it and said I wouldn’t eat that so why you expect the customer to. I was like wow just look at it the lettuce is brown. Never again.

This is a terrible restaurant. I have eaten here over two dozen times, at all hours of the day(including in the wee hours of the morning, but also throughout the afternoon and evening). The service is laughable at best. If you get waited on(one time I showed up at 5AM and the waitress didn’t show up to seat me at all, though I did walk out after ten minutes of standing there). Many times your order will be wrong. Even if it is right, prepare to wait a long time for your food. There have been two separate occasions(one at 8PM at night, the other at 9AM in the morning) where I had to wait for over 45 minutes for my food. The prices are the same at any other Steak ‘n Shake, so it’s not great but not terrible. But the service is so bad that I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone, even if I didn’t like them. The only advantage it has is that it is about the only place open at 4:30 in the morning other than White Castle and Waffle House, so it gets good business at that time despite being downright horrendous.

Went here earlier the floor was disgusting I felt my shoes stick and I almost slipped in some spots. The waitress was nice but complained too much about how much work she had. Its a job, a job isn’t supposed to be easy and fun, buck up. The food was good and well priced. But our napkins were covered in brown and yellow stains. Kids were running around throwing stuff and besides our waitress no one was moving. One ate a salad the whole time we were there. I understand lunch break but for over an hour? And in front of customers? My fiancé and I love steak n shake and he and I just moved back to Louisville. But it saddened me that he had to see a steak n shake as gross and unorganized as this one. Gave outer loop a bad name. I’d recommend another location.

This was one of the worst Steak ‘n Shakes I’ve ever tried to eat at. «Tried» because after 20 minutes I left because I couldn’t get a waitress to take my order. I nearly slipped on the way out because the floors in the dining area were filthy. The bathrooms were disgusting. Someone had vomited in the women’s room and no one had cleaned it up. If the dining area was in any way indicative of the condition of the kitchen then the person was probably sick because they ate the food.

Tell the cooks if the bun feels stale it is and not to serve it. I am axed how many people will serve food they, themselves wouldn’t eat. Worst place for lunch on this strip — skip it

I love Steak and Shake. Sometimes I just get a craving for their burgers and nothing else will do. But this time was a big, huge, NOPE. We had to wait about 20 minutes. Our table didn’t have silverware, and we actually had to request some. To top it off, A WAITRESSWASPICKINGHERNOSE. I’m talking getting deep in there and scraping. She was searching for something up there, and she was not stopping until she got it. And then right after she had her finger up there, she was touching napkins, cups, plates. Like I said, NOPENOPENOPE.

Stean N Shake has a special place in my heart. It was always our go to after high school parties, when my band played a show, and after certain sporting events. However, through the years(at several locations) I have seen a steady decline in quality and service. My last experience at this Steak N Shake left so much to be desired that I had to take to Unilocal. My wife and I met up with several old friends from out of town around midnight and were promptly seated. We placed our drink orders and they arrived without incident. Unfortunately, that’s where the good experience ended. Milk shakes took maybe 15 minutes and were incorrect. Several orders were wrong. When the waitress brought back my correct order it was cold. I don’t comprehend having to wait 30 minutes for a «cooked to order» burger and it being cold when I can go to McDonalds to get a burger that’s been sitting for God knows how long and it be hot. Steak N Shake is trying to separate themselves from the typical fast food joints by offering table service, real plates and utensils. My experience didn’t even live up to that.

Now I don’t eat a lot a fast food. It just doesn’t sit well with me. But every now and then I get an itch for a nice ol’ fattening burger. I just can’t help myself. A couple of weeks ago my craving crept up on me, so I decided to hit up the always pleasing Steak N Shake. *Sigh* I hate to say it, but the experience was terrible! I went through the drive-thru and ordered a banana shake and a grilled portobello and swiss burger. I know it sounds horrible, doesn’t. My heart was screaming no, but my mind had to have it. Well, to make a long story short, I should have listened to my heart! I know the Steak N Shake drive-thru is a little different than your typical drive-thru. Food takes a little bit longer there for good reason. But, I had to wait 30 minutes(after I paid) to get my food. That’s just a little bit extreme to me. Probably would have gotten my food faster if I had of dined in! Beyond that, after all of that waiting, my food was cold and my milkshake just didn’t do the trick. I really wanted to have a good experience because I rarely treat myself to a burger, but this trip just missed the mark. If and/or when I decide to give it another go, I’m crossing my fingers that my trip will more like the Steak N Shake I remember.
