Rabbit Shadow Farms has a great selection of herbs, plants, and pots. I snuck in just before closing time to find a birthday gift for a friend who is a green thumb. They have a cute gift shop in front and a greenhouse in the back. In the greenhouse I was greeted by an ancient black lab named Denali who is deaf and hobbles around after her owner and customers. After wandering around and petting Denali for a while I found a great lavender topiary and a moss pot that went together perfectly. They re-potted the plant for me for free and even put extra moss on top to make it really cute. Rabbit Shadow Farms has the service and selection to make other greenhouses green with envy!

Rabbit Shadow Farm introduced me to the unmitigated magic of Fairy Gardening. At a class offered by the Denver Botanic Gardens, the owner, Jeff Sorensen, taught us about topiary plants. Since I was planning my wedding at the time, I began having wild ideas about marguerite daisy topiaries because of an amazing specimen he had on display. Through several phone calls back and forth, it turned out the daisy trees wouldn’t work out given the time of year I needed them, storing them until needed, etc. Undaunted, I decided to visit and check out what all they had to offer on a regular basis without a special order. I fell in love with this admittedly out of the way but charming nursery. Being an avid plant lover(and sadly, plant killer) I buy a lot of plants, especially herbs. They have the most verdant, leafy, odiferous and delectable herbs I’ve ever seen, felt or tasted. I stocked up on that first visit thinking it best since I can’t be driving out to Loveland on a regular basis just for plant shopping. Shortly thereafter, I’m cruising my favorite Farmer’s Market on Old South Pearl Street and there at the end of the row, is a Rabbit Shadow Farm booth. My squeal of delight was deafening and absolutely justified. My eyes, trained to hone in on cuteness at a hundred paces, locked on the Fairy Garden. It was love at first sight. I bought the box, plants, tiny little furniture — this entire fairy kingdom for only $ 50. The best part, each year, I get to recreate the fairy garden using only a few dollars of investment in new plants. Having now expanded my empire to two fairy gardens, they gain me many a compliment from guest or delivery driver when spotted on the porch. I’m not sure if they still offer classes through the Botanical Gardens anymore, because they offer their own classes on site, including fairy gardening and topiary. And sadly, this past summer I did not see them at the Farmer’s Market. Their hours are tough for us working Joes and Josephinas to get to, but you can call them to schedule a visit or a tour outside of their regular hours.
