Some people adventure for riches, some for fame and some for just the thrill of discovery. But I, friends … I adventure for food. Yes, food. If there is a hidden kitchen with culinary delights, a meal tucked away in some remote portion of the city, even just a simple dish that I «have to try,» I will throw on my Indiana Jones hat, grab my compass and head north toward adventure. Tally ho! This was the case the other day while dining at a small bistro in Covington with a local food blogger. While there, we struck up a conversation with the man working the counter, who found out about or love of eating. He told us that if we really wanted to try something amazing, we needed to head down to Loveland and find the IGA there for doughnuts … but not just any doughnuts, but amazing, fresh, in-house made from scratch yeast doughnuts. And when we walked out of that bistro, we were both craving doughnuts. Tally ho indeed! We traveled into Ludlow searching for the IGA. No luck. Hopping onto the Internet through the magic of mobile phoning, we found there was no IGA in the area. But we did pass by a Riverside Market Place a while back … maybe that was it. Sure enough, as we walked in, there was a giant bakery section advertising their fresh and homemade doughnuts. Ok, let’s do this. Riverside feels almost like a combination convenience store /grocery store /truck stop. Rows and rows of food going back under horrible florescent lighting, giving everything that 7 – 11 glow. In front was the bakery, with a large glass counter filled with delicious doughnuts(and some really original and neat ones too, like braided and chocolate covered and glazed croissant as well as your normal sprinkles and whatnot.) We got a bunch to try and took them out to be eaten. Woah. The man was not kidding, these were some amazing doughnuts. Soft and flaky and delicious with a sweet glaze covering(but not so sweet that it hurts to take a bite as some places do. Nearly the perfect amount of dough to sugar ratio on the treat.) They were fantastic and fresh. Homemade for sure. Now, they didn’t keep as well as I’d hoped. The next day they were a little dry and not as good. If you’re going to do these, they should be done fresh and ready to go. Then you too will be amazed by their simple delicious goodness. A success all around … The place also advertises amazing«friend chicken,» so someday I shall return to try that. Adventure awaits!

Riverside Marketplace offers exceptional convenience, friendly service, and a wide variety of fresh produce along with the essentials you’d expect from any grocery store. As a resident of the Ludlow/Covington area for almost a year, I am extremely thankful that we now have a full grocery store in town! It’s even open 24 hours, which is great — especially for running errands Sunday evenings in preparation for the week ahead. Highly recommend!
