Catfish Kitchen

While working in the area, I stopped with a co-​worker at this unassuming neighborhood spot. The seafood was served with a smile. All entrees come with a free side of soup. I agree 100% with Heather H. that it was underwhelming but that the sides (hush puppies, coleslaw & pickled green tomatoes) were A-​OK.
My co-​worker had a fried catfish plate. I had a catfish po-​boy. Both were satisfying.
If you are in the area and want to support a local business, you can’t do better than Catfish Kitchen!

I was passing through Lumberton and craving fried shrimp. My mom recommended this place so of course I Unilocaled it lol! I was worried bc it only had 3 stars, but I trusted my mom’s opinion so I stopped by.
It’s a small hole in the wall sit down diner, but they also have carry out which I saw several people pick up take out in the hour I was there. First you are served a tray of complementary coleslaw, hushpuppies, and picked green tomatoes. The tray was delicious! The hushpuppies were flavorful and salty, the coleslaw fresh tasting, and the pickled green tomatoes flavor reminded me of bread and butter pickles. Next the waitress brought out complimentary gumbo now I was not a fan of this at all!!! I am cajun so very picky about my gumbo. The roux was flavorless, rice was mushy, and shrimp were tiny and chewy. This was the only thing I disliked here and reason why I deducted a star. Finally the dish was served… I ordered the large plate of popcorn shrimp which came with a small baked potato. I was very impressed that the shrimp were larger than expected and the batter was just what I was craving! The portion was very big for one person, and I was pleased with the tartar sauces flavor. Our server was fast and polite. When we were leaving I told our waitress that I was going to write a review, and to my surprise she had never heard of Unilocal.I guess the residents of this area aren’t too familiar with it. I am now positive that this is why there are no reviews for this place. Will return again!

There is a «Jingle» I remember back in the day that went something like — «Catfish Kitchen aint you a wishen?» Well, I had take out Shrimp Gumbo and honestly I wish the shrimp were bigger and more of them. I’ve seen bait shrimp bigger than what was in the gumbo! On a positive side, the rue was very good.
