Something about this market is strange to me for one reason or another i just dislike this place a lot. I stopped in to get a few things right after work. I noticed the instant gimmick like atmosphere, cheesy wall murals, and what’s that a Mars theme song? This company isnt like a whole foods, a trader joes or even a Safeway. Their brands are all local and nearly all generic, except for the cereals in most place. Do not expect to find kimchi, or any other peppers besides green. There is a fair selection of produce and a larger selection of meat’s. All cut by the stores butcher and packaged. Everything but the chicken is house cut, so you’ll likely find some Purdue locally chicken. Something about the dundalk feel and the way my clerk sounds when she rang me up, something about«hon» is all i can remember.

Mars– it’s where grandma goes to shop! And that’s not bad– just quirky! It has two locations in the area in strip malls just off of York Road, both pretty much equivalent. Both are retro-50s in lay out– while clean, they still have that original non-remodeled grocery store feel from my childhood,(OK– maybe retro 70s? I ain’t THAT old!!!) I kinda dig the chrome-lined old fashined art-deco-y open-topped freezers and the checkered floor tiles. :) Pricing— Good! They are the cheapest store in town, usualy a few cents less per item, which can add up. Sadly, they won’t double coupons, and they have no club-card nonsense,(also means no special club card deals, though, beyond usual sales.) Variety– they carry some funky brands I’ve only seen in b-f nowhere stores, like«Shure Fine»; the stores are SMALL, so they only carry what sells. You can do a good, full grocery run here– meats are good. BUT– Their«fresh» seafood looks SCARY. Their lunchmeats are fine, but no high-end stuff like Boar’s Head. I’ve gotten pretty good lunchmeat there, but the brand is nothing I’ve ever heard of. Neither store has a pharmacy– so hygiene items and vitamins are severely limited. You’ll most likely have to run to the RIte Aid or little local pharmacy next door to each one if you need vitamins and such. And bakery– for sweets, it’s good. For routine packaged breads, they got ‘em all from Pepperidge Farm to Wonder. But for real, honest-to-goodness French bread and fancier homemade-type loaves– selection is extremely, extremely limited– this is NOT the store to go to for fancy bread. The other oddity – ALLVEGGIESARESHRINK-WRAPPED! They’re good – actually, their produce is pretty darn decent all around– but it’s all wrapper in plastic wrap on little foam trays!!! Don’t get that at all… Because of its limits, Mars tends to be were we duck in to pick up milk and eggs on the quick, and rarely do we do a full shopping run there– but many, many folks do. Esp. grandmas! :)

I worked here during summers in college. It was as good a place as any to make extra cash ringing up groceries. They have a delicious bakery and a SECUATM machine. Older people like it because it has no bonus card and lot of the employees aren’t kids.
