I was spoiled by Ventura College basketball( ). In Ventura, California — where I lived for the past three years — the local community college’s basketball programs were unbelievable. The players were very good, the games well run, good excited crowds, nice gymnasium. I was a big fan and I still think VC basketball is one of the best family entertainment values in Ventura County. So I forgot what most community college basketball is really like — utilitarian. I should have remembered — I did play-by-play and color commentary for Green River CC when I went to school there. Teams don’t play in front of too many people — usually only a handful of friends or family, gyms are usually crummy given that most Washington community colleges last got money for renovations in the 70’s and the level of play is not on a very high level. Community college basketball exists for players to play, and that’s pretty much it. Edmonds Community College basketball pretty much fits that mold, it’s very much no frills. Tickets were five dollars and for those five dollars, I felt lucky that there was even a small concession stand, that they played music during the breaks, even that they had a PA announcer — thanks ECC baseball team for making it happen. The game was pretty ugly although it did provide some excitement going into overtime albeit because of some major mistakes made by both Bellevue College and ECC. I doubt I’ll be back to a game very soon unless I’m really hard up for college basketball one night — I am a junkie after all.
